A possible link between gabbros bearing high temperature iddingsite alteration and huge pegmatoid intrusions: The Society Islands, French Polynesia ArchiMer
Clement, Jean-philippe; Caroff, Martial; Dudoignon, Patrick; Launeau, Patrick; Bohn, Marcel; Cotten, Joseph; Blais, Sylvain; Guille, Gérard.
This paper reports new field observations and new petrological, textural and geochemical data on two gabbroic intrusions and one pegmatoid dyke from the French Polynesian islands Maupiti and Bora Bora, respectively. Olivine crystals from the Faataufi and Barque de Hiro gabbros (Maupiti) include High Temperature Iddingsite (HTI), exhibiting three distinct morphological facies. Chemical and crystallographical data performed by electron microprobe, scanning microscope, X-ray diffractometry and Near InfraRed spectroscopy show that HTI results from modifications of olivine structure through intense hydroxylation and Fe-oxidation. The HTI-free 120 m-wide Cloche de Hiro dyke (Bora Bora) exhibits a textural zonation from heterogranular/intergranular gabbro...

Hautefeuille, Fanny.
Cultured black pearls are now the tirst export value of French Polynesia. This fast growing activity encourage the retum of the islanders to their native islands and the revival of the economy of the archipelagoes. However, the importance of the development induced sorne technical and economical problems. New reglementations are needed to organize the market and stabilize the black pearl price, the quotation of which is falling since 1990. After the important mortalities which occured in 1985-1 986, the mother of pearl general investigation program was set up. Il aims at the study of the biology and the ecology of the mother of pearl Pinclada margaritifera. The study of the nutrition of this oyster is part of this program and will contribute to the...

Atmospheric particulate element concentrations and deposition rates in French Polynesia OMA
Rojas, C.M.; Injuk, J.; Van Grieken, R.E.; Maenhaut, W..
Over a period of eight months, a total of 26 atmospheric particulate matter samples were collected at the location of Tahiti and in other areas of French Polynesia, using a specially equipped sailboat. A 6-stage cascade impact or was used to separate aerosols in the following size classes: > 4,2-4, 1-2,0.5-1,0.25-0.5 and < 0.25 µm equivalent aerodynamic diameter. The resulting set of 156 size segregated aerosol samples was analyzed by particle-induced X-ray emission for 16 elements. This study deals with the concentrations of Na, Mg, Al, Si, S, Cl, K, Ca, Ti, Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn, Br, Sr and Pb. Enrichment factor calculations reveal that Na, Mg, S, A, K, Ca and Sr were little fractionated with respect to bulk sea water, whereas Al, Si, Ti, Mn and Fe...

Bioerosion of the coralline alga Hydrolithon onkodes by microborers in the coral reefs of Moorea, French Polynesia ArchiMer
Tribollet, A; Payri, C.
Calcareous skeletons of the coralline alga Hydrolithon onkodes are colonised by a variety of microboring organisms including euendolithic algae. The species composition of microboring organisms as well as the boring patterns and the boring activity differ between live and dead coralline crusts. The microborers inhabiting the live crusts form an obvious, macroscopically visible green layer in the basal part of the crust, which is in contact with the substratum underneath. Some species, primarily Plectonema terebrans (83 %) and Ostreobium quekettii (7 %) grow from the inside towards the crust's surface and produce a dense network of branched filaments. Following the death of the coralline alga, the skeletons are colonised at the surface and bored inward by...

Deep crustal structure of the Tuamotu plateau and Tahiti (French Polynesia) based on seismic refraction data - art. no. 1656 ArchiMer
Patriat, Martin; Klingelhoefer, Frauke; Aslanian, Daniel; Contrucci, Isabelle; Gutscher, Marc-andré; Talandier, Jacques; Avedik, Felix; Francheteau, Jean; Weigel, Wilfried.
[1] In French Polynesia, the young (< 5Ma) Society Islands appear to result from intraplate volcanism, while the old (>50 Ma) Tuamotu plateau was likely created at or near the ridge axis. The structure of the crust between those two archipelagoes is constrained by a 300 km long refraction seismic profile. Crustal and upper mantle arrivals recorded by 6 OBHs and 3 land stations were used to provide a 2D model of the crust. Results of our study, combined with that of Grevemeyer et al. [2001] show a slight flexure below the Tahiti apron, while a deep crustal root (21 km) underlies the Tuamotu plateau. These structures reflect the different modes of load emplacement and compensation mechanisms between these two volcanic edifices, consistent with an...

Developmental aspects of biomineralisation in the Polynesian pearl oyster Pinctada margaritifera var. cumingii ArchiMer
Che, Lm; Golubic, S; Le Campion-alsumard, T; Payri, C.
The shell biomineralisation with special reference to the nacreous region is observed during the development of the Polynesian pearl oyster. Ultrastructural changes were studied and timed for the first time from planktonic larval shells to two-year-old adult shells. During the first two weeks following fertilization, the prodissoconch-I shell structure is undifferentiated and uniformly granular. The prodissoconch-II stage which develops during the next two weeks acquires a columnar organization. Metamorphosis is characterized by the formation of the dissoconch shell with all the elements of an adult shell and marks the onset of the development of the nacre. Nucleation starts within an organic matrix from point sources forming 'crystal germs' which expand...

Thomas, Yoann.
Understanding key factors determining the bentho-pelagic species larval growth and dispersal remains one of the challenges of marine ecology, notably to understand the adult population structure and dynamics. In the present study, we explore this determinism on the development and dispersal of the black-lip pearl oyster (Pinctada margaritifera var. cumingii, Linné 1758) larvae in a French Polynesian atoll lagoon (Ahe, Tuamotu archipelago). Rearing of the pearl oyster for the production of black pearls takes on a major social and economic place in French Polynesia. However, the supply of pearl oyster seed to the farms depends entirely on the natural collection of wild spat of the only one specie P. margaritifera, and spatial and temporal variability of spat...

Evidence of donor effect on cultured pearl quality from a duplicated grafting experiment on Pinctada margaritifera using wild donors ArchiMer
Tayale, Alexandre; Gueguen, Yannick; Treguier, Cathy; Le Grand, Jacqueline; Cochennec-laureau, Nathalie; Montagnani, Caroline; Ky, Chin-long.
Producing high quality cultured black pearls from Pinctada margaritifera is one of the major challenges for the "pearl oyster" industry in French Polynesia. In order to assess donor effect on cultured pearl quality, wild Pinctada margaritifera originating from the Tuamotu Archipelago were used in a duplicated grafting experiment. After 12 months of culture, nucleus retention was assessed and seven pearl quality traits recorded on the 454 cultured pearls harvested from the experiment. The traits scored were nacre thickness and pearl weight, surface defects, lustre, grade, and the colour components: 1) darkness of cultured pearl colour, and 2) visual perception of colour class (bodycolor and/or overtone). Our results demonstrate for the first time that...

Leproux, E.
French Polynesia started it's Fish Aggregating Device programme in June 1981 with the positioning of the first buoy offshore of the main island of Tahiti. Since then, 251 structures have been installed throughout the 5 archipelagoes of this French overseas territory. The shape and size of the devices have evolved 8 times over this period, however, a single model has not yet been adopted. Trials are currently underway using lighter structures similar to those found in the Indian Ocean. The anchoring lines have progressively been modified through better knowledge of material and product availability, as well as better understanding of environmental constraints. The programme is entirely financed by the territorial government and managed by the public sector....

Family effect on cultured pearl quality in black-lipped pearl oyster Pinctada margaritifera and insights for genetic improvement ArchiMer
Ky, Chin-long; Blay, Carole; Sham-koua, Manaarii; Vanaa, Vincent; Lo, Cedrik; Cabral, Philippe.
Individual Pinctada margaritifera molluscs were collected from the Takapoto atoll (Tuamotu Archipelago, French Polynesia) and used to produce ten first generation full-sib families in a hatchery system, following artificial breeding protocols. After three years of culture, these progenies were transferred to Rangiroa atoll (Tuamotu Archipelago, French Polynesia) and tested for their potential as graft donors. A large-scale grafting experiment of 1500 grafts was conducted, in which a single professional grafter used ten individual donor oysters from each of the ten families, grafting 15 recipient oysters from each donor. The recipient oysters were all obtained from wild spat collection in Ahe (Tuamotu Archipelago, French Polynesia). After 18 months of...

Gametogenic cycle and reproductive effort of the tropical blacklip pearl oyster, Pinctada margaritifera (Bivalvia : Pteriidae), cultivated in Takapoto atoll (French Polynesia) ArchiMer
Pouvreau, Stephane; Gangnery, Aline; Tiapari, Jerome; Lagarde, Franck; Garnier, Matthieu; Bodoy, Alain.
The gametogenic cycle and the reproductive effort of the blacklip pearl oyster, Pinctada margaritifera, cultivated in Takapoto lagoon were studied for a 1-year period (March 1997-April 1998) by bimonthly observations of gonadal sections, dry tissue weights and gonadal index in a population of pearl oyster composed of three age-groups. pearl oysters attained sexual maturity in the end of their first year (height approximate to 40 mm), implying that P. margaritifera is a late-maturing species in comparison with other Pteriidae. This species was also confirmed to be a marked protandrous successive hermaphrodite in culture, with 100 % of males at first maturity and 75 % in older pearl oyster (height > 120 mm). The general pattern of gametogenic activity,...

Arnaud, Sophie; Goyard, Emmanuel; Prou, Jean; Vonau, Vincent; Bonhomme, Francois; Boudry, Pierre.
Exploitation of the pearl oyster Pinetada margaritifera, which has developed in French Polynesia over the last twenty years, is based mainly on the collection of natural spat. Recruitment is highly variable in space and time and so spat is very often transferred by the farmers between atolls or even between archipelagos. In previous studies, anonymous nuclear markers demonstrated that This development has coincided with a genetic homogenisation of the wild stocks since the 1980s. This suggests a high level of reproductive success on farms, which is likely to be due to the high density of animaIs when compared to the density in the wild. We used the same markers to show that the level of genetic variability observed on farms is not significantly different...

Hydroids from French Polynesia with notes on distribution and ecology Naturalis
Vervoort, W.; Vasseur, P..
INTRODUCTION Distribution and ecology of hydroids from coral reefs of high islands and atolls of French Polynesia so far have received little attention. Redier (1967, 1971) published a preliminary list of 14 species from Salvat's collections, sampled during several trips to Tahiti, Tuamoto (Mururoa, Reao and Maturei Vavao Atolls), to the Australes Islands (Rapa) and to Gambier. The present paper results from researches carried out by one of us (P.V.) concerning the benthic bionomy of reef sciophilous communities of hard bottoms. They have been carried out at Tiahura, Moorea, Society Islands (fig. IA) and on Takapoto Atoll, Tuamoto Archipelago (fig. 2A) in 1973 and 1974. They gave us occasion to compile a revised list of about 22 species of hydroids...

The possible consequences of acidification on pearl farming are disruption of oyster metabolism and change in growth. In the laboratory, we studied the impact of pCO2 (3540, 1338 and 541μatm) on the physiology of pearl oysters exposed for 100 days. This experiment was repeated after an interval of one year. Several physiological compartments were examined in pearl oysters: the scope for growth by measuring ingestion, assimilation and oxygen consumption, gametogenesis by means of histological observations, shell growth by measurement and observation by optical and electronic microscopy, and at molecular level by measuring the expression of nine genes of mantle cells implied in the biomineralisation process. Results from both experiments showed that high...

Influence of plankton concentration on gametogenesis and spawning of the black lip pearl oyster Pinctada margaritifera in Ahe atoll lagoon (Tuamotu archipelago, French polynesia) ArchiMer
Fournier, Jonathan; Levesque, Emmanuelle; Pouvreau, Stephane; Le Pennec, Marcel; Le Moullac, Gilles.
Pearl culture industry represents one of the dominant business sector of French Polynesia. However, it still entirely relies on unpredictable spat collection success. Our aim was to assess the influence of natural plankton concentration fluctuations on maturation and spawning of the black lip pearl oyster Pinctada margaritifera, during a 4 months survey conducted in Ahe atoll lagoon. Plankton concentration was assessed by chlorophyll a extraction and by microscope counts while gonadic index, gonado-visceral dry weights and histology were used to measure pearl oysters reproduction activity. We found that (i) plankton concentration fluctuations were mainly related to wind regime, (ii) gametogenesis rate was mainly related to plankton concentration, (iii)...
