Anatomical and Functional Description of the Radius of White Footed Tamarin (Saguinus leucopus) International Journal of Morphology
Duque Parra,Jorge Eduardo; Vélez García,Juan Fernando; Barco Ríos,John.
Saguinus leucopus is a neotropical primate, endemic and monotypic of Colombia (South America), with few studies of its anatomy, whose morphology radius this key element of this quadruped locomotion arboreal animal remains unknown. This study describes the gross functional anatomy of the radius bone of white-footed tamarin (Saguinus leucopus). The study was based on eight specimens fixed with 10% formalin and extracted their radius them, describing the main features of the bony prominences, such as muscle and ligaments attachments and neurovascular pipes. The radius of Saguinus leucopus bony presents some prominences for muscles and ligaments attachments, in addition to the synovial cartilage regions to other parts of the forelimb. The various anatomical...

Application of Morphological Indices in the Assessment of Type and Function in Sheep International Journal of Morphology
Salako,A. E.
Live weight and eight body measurements records taken on 284 sheep comprising 226 West African Dwarf and 58 Yankasa sheep were analysed. The sheep were extensively managed within the south west Nigeria. The aim was to achieve a preliminary assessment of type and function from zoometrical indices produced from combinations of different morphometric scores. The indices used were weight, height slope, length index, width slope, depth index, foreleg length balance and cumulative index. The body measurements used were wither height, body length, hip length, hip width, rump height, foreleg length, chest width and heart girth. The body measurements showed that the Yankasa is bigger than the WAD sheep. The measured parts are highly correlated. Tested indices...

Factors influencing the decline of traditional cross-stream earthen weir (Thamnop) irrigation in northeast Thailand: Comparison of a still-functioning and an abandoned thamnop in two villages in Surin province Thai Agricultural
Prapatsorn Wongsalee; Rambo, A. Terry; Fukui Hayao; Arunee Promkhambut.
Earthen weir (thamnop) irrigation of rice fields was formerly widespread in Northeast Thailand (Isan) but has greatly declined in recent years, although still persisting in some places in southern Isan. The objective of this research was to discover if there are differences in the contexts of existing and abandoned of thamnop that may explain their retention or abandonment. Field study employing participation observation and interviewing of key informants and samples of farmer households was done in two villages in Surin province. One village has a still-functioning thamnop, the other has an abandoned one. Both physical and social factors were found to differ among the two cases. The existing thamnop is located at the midpoint between the uplands and...

Forelimb Myology of the Golden Pheasant (Chrysolophus pictus) International Journal of Morphology
Zhang,Zihui; Yang,Yan.
Morphological work on the appendicular myology of birds forms the basis for comparative, functional and systematic studies, but our knowledge of the descriptive anatomy of birds is still very incomplete. The musculature of the wing muscles of the Golden Pheasant (Chrysolophus pictus), an endemic species of China, is studied in detail. All wing muscles are present as in other Galliformes. Myological characteristics including the absence of a deep layer of M. pectoralis pars thoracicus, well development of anterbrachial muscles, as well as the occurrence of a distinct fleshy slip from the proximal belly of M. biceps brachii, are suggested to be associated with its flapping flight. This paper is the prelude to functional analysis on muscle architecture in...

FUNCTION IN BIOLOGY: ETIOLOGICAL AND ORGANIZATIONAL PERSPECTIVES Acta biol.Colomb.
NIÑO EL-HANI,CHARBEL; FREITAS NUNES-NETO,NEI.
In this paper, we argue for a taxonomy of approaches to function based on different epistemological perspectives assumed with regard to the treatment of this central concept in the life sciences. We distinguish between etiological and organizational perspectives on function, analyzing distinct theories: Wright's selectionist etiological approach and Godfrey-Smith's modern history theory of functions, in the case of the etiological perspective; and Cummins' functional analysis and Collier's interactivist approach to function, among organizational accounts. We explain differences and similarities between these theories and the broader perspectives on function, arguing for a particular way of understanding the consensus without unity in debates about...

Managing for Old Growth in Frequent-fire Landscapes Ecology and Society

There is no one-size-fits-all approach to managing frequent-fire, old-growth forests. However, there are general guidelines to follow: 1) set objectives for both structure (tree density, diameter distribution, tree species composition, spatial arrangement, amount of coarse woody debris) and function (nutrient cycling, desired tree species regeneration); 2) prioritize treatments according to ecological, economic, and social needs and risks; 3) identify the potential treatments (natural fire, prescribed fire, silvicultural cutting) that best meet the objectives and scale of the project; and 4) implement the treatment(s). We discuss each of these guidelines in this article.

Morphometric Differentiation and Asessment of Function of the Fulani and Yoruba Ecotype Indigenous Chickens of Nigeria International Journal of Morphology
Olawunmi,O. O; Salako,A. E; Afuwape,A. A.
Data on bodyweight and 11 body measurements were taken on 51 Fulani and 101 Yoruba ecotype chicken from two central poultry markets: Ilorin in the middle belt and Ibadan in the southwest región of Nigeria, respectively. The aim was to provide baseline information on size characteristics of Fulani and Yoruba ecotype chickens, differentiate between the types and use the morphometrical variables for a preliminary assessment of type and function. Results showed that least square means of live weight, wing and shank length, body, thigh and toe length, beak length and breast breadth of the Fulani ecotype were generally higher (P < 0.01) than those of the Yoruba ecotype. The males were also superior (P < 0.01) to the females for comb, wing, shank length and...

Semen quality characteristics of Koekoek breeder cocks influenced by supplemental inclusion levels of onion and garlic mixture at 35-41 weeks of age R. Bras. Zootec.
Okoro,Victor Mela Obinna; Mbajiorgu,Christian Anayochukwu; Mbajiorgu,Ejikeme Felix.
ABSTRACT An experiment was conducted to determine the effect of varying dietary supplemental inclusion levels of onion and garlic mixture on semen quality characteristics of Koekoek breeder cocks aged 35-41 weeks. The experimental diets were isocaloric and isonitrogenous but with different supplemental inclusion levels of onion and garlic. A complete randomized design was used for the experiment. The three dietary supplemental levels based on garlic and onion supplemental inclusion levels were Q0 (0 g onion and 0 g garlic per 600 g DM feed), Q1 (2.5 g onion and 2.5 g garlic per 600 g DM feed), and Q2 (5 g onion and 5 g garlic per 600 g DM feed) with each treatment having three replicates. A quadratic type equation was used to determine the onion and garlic...

Structure and function of the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator BJMBR
Morales,M.M.; Capella,M.A.M.; Lopes,A.G..
Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a lethal autosomal recessive genetic disease caused by mutations in the CF transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR). Mutations in the CFTR gene may result in a defective processing of its protein and alter the function and regulation of this channel. Mutations are associated with different symptoms, including pancreatic insufficiency, bile duct obstruction, infertility in males, high sweat Cl-, intestinal obstruction, nasal polyp formation, chronic sinusitis, mucus dehydration, and chronic Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus lung infection, responsible for 90% of the mortality of CF patients. The gene responsible for the cellular defect in CF was cloned in 1989 and its protein product CFTR is activated by an increase...
