A methodological approach to potential vegetation modeling using GIS techniques and phytosociological expert-knowledge: application to mainland Portugal IPB - Escola Superior Agrária
Capelo, J.; Mesquita, Sandra; Costa, José C.; Ribeiro, Silvia; Arsénio, Pedro; Neto, Carlos; Monteiro-Henriques, T.; Aguiar, Carlos; Honrado, João; Espírito-Santo, Dalila; Lousã, Mário.
An attempt to obtain a consistent spatial model of natural potential vegetation (NPV) for the mainland Portuguese territory is reported. Spatial modeling procedures performed in a Geographic Information System (GIS) environment, aimed to operationalize phytosociological expert-knowledge about the putative distribution of potential zona1 forest communities dominant in the Portuguese continental territories. The paradigm for NPV assumed was that of RIVAS-MARTINEZ (1976) and RIVAS-MARTINEZ et al. (1999), which presupposes, for a given territory, a univocal correspondence between a uniform combination of bioclimatic stage and lithology given a biogeographical context, and a unique successional sequence leading to a single climax community (i. e. a vegetation...

A methodological proposal for quantifying environmental compensation through the spatial analysis of vulnerability indicators. Repositório Alice
TORRESAN, F. E.; LORANDI, R..
The aim of this work was to propose a methodology for quantifying the environmental compensation through the spatial analysis of vulnerability indicators. A case study was applied for the analysis of sand extraction enterprises, in the region of Descalvado and Analândia, inland of São Paulo State, Brazil. Environmental vulnerability scores were attributed for the indicators related to erosion, hydrological resources and biodiversity loss. This methodological proposal allowed analyzing the local alternatives of certain enterprise with the objective of reducing impacts and at the same time reducing the costs of environmental compensation. The application of the methodology significantly reduced the subjectivity degree usually associated to the most of the...

A Simple Non-Parametric Gis Model For Predicting Species Distribution: Endemic Birds In Bioko Island OceanDocs
Fa, J.E.; Lenton, S.M.; Del Val, J.P..
Species mapping is a useful conservation tool for predicting patterns of biological diversity, or identifying geographical areas of conservation significance. Mapping can also improve our understanding of the appropriateness of habitat areas for individual species. We developed a new model, PREDICT, for mapping habitat suitability of plant and animal species from incomplete field survey data. PREDICT is a statistical program written for use within a GIS (geographic information system). It produces images and statistics that assess the potential of unstudied areas for wildlife for which presence/absence data and basic habitat information are available. Suitability for a target species is determined within surveyed and non-surveyed squares by a form of...

Activity patterns, home-range size, and habitat utilization of Sarpa salpa (Teleostei : Sparidae) in the Mediterranean Sea ArchiMer
Jadot, Catherine; Donnay, A; Acolas, M; Cornet, Y; Begout, Marie-laure.
Acoustic telemetry was used to record diel movement and habitat utilization of the salema (Sarpa salpa) (Teleostei: Sparidae) during three consecutive summers from 2000 to 2002 in the Calvi and Achiarina bays of Corsica in the Mediterranean Sea. A total of 18 fish was equipped with acoustic transmitters inserted in the body cavity, 13 were tracked in the Bay of Calvi (275 mm +/- 26.9 L-F), and 5 in Achiarina Bay (260 mm +/- 33.6 LF). Two different systems were used to track the fish. The one used in the Bay of Calvi was a manual receiver and a directional hydrophone. The second system, used in Achiarina Bay, was a radioacoustic-positioning (RAP) system that continuously monitored the movements of the fish. Fish positions were put in a geographic...

An example of GIS potentiality for coastal zone management: preselection of submerged oyster culture areas near Marennes-Oleron (France) ArchiMer
Durand, H.; Guillaumont, Brigitte; Loarer, Ronan; Loubersac, Lionel; Heral, Maurice; Prou, Jean.
The Charente Maritime coast, in central western France, is the most important area for oyster and mussel production in Europe. High density, in this restricted intertidal area, induces low growing rate and socio-economic difficulties. One of the possible solutions is to shift some oysters from intertidal area to submerged areas. Bathymetry, sedimentology, hydrodynamism, fisheries and administrative rules are some conditions which are considered to establish the better selection of potential zone. The successive steps of setting up the prototype of GIS are presented: digitized traditional data from charts, extracted data from grid models (hydrodynmaic model), merging of thematic covers, proposal of favorable areas. The results are discussed especially on...

Are EU spatial ex ante coexistence regulations proportional? AgEcon
Demont, Matty; Daems, W.; Dillen, Koen; Mathijs, Erik; Sausse, C.; Tollens, Eric.
The EU is currently struggling to implement coherent coexistence regulations on genetically modified (GM) and non-GM crops in all member states. While it stresses that any approach needs to be “proportionate to the aim of achieving coexistence”, very few studies have actually attempted to assess whether the proposed spatial ex ante coexistence regulations (SEACERs) satisfy this proportionality condition. In this article, we define proportionality as a functional relationship which is weakly increasing in the incentives for coexistence. We propose a spatial framework based on an existing landscape and introduce the new concept of shadow factor as a measure for the opportunity costs induced by SEACERs. This enables comparing the proportionality of (i) rigid...

Aspectos generales sobre la estructura térmica superficial del mar, de la zona comprendida entre el golfo de Penas y la boca occidental del estrecho de Magallanes OceanDocs
Boré, D.; Barbieri, M.A.; Catasti, V..
This study was carried out within the Project Cimar-Fiordo 2. The general objective was to describe the sea surface temperature in the zone between 46º LS and 52º LS, and from the 73º 52’ LW to the 76º 30’ LW, considering the channel and fjord zone. The analysis was based on satellite images of sea surface temperature. The images used came from the AVHRR radiometer of the NOAA satellite, from the year 1995 to 1998. The cartographic representation and the analysis of the seasonal variability of the sea surface temperature was made using the software of the Geographical Information System (GIS), named IDRISI. The zone was with clouds during all the period of study, mainly in autumn. With the available images it was possible to observe a big difference...

Assessment of agricultural land-use change for helping sustainable land management and landscape development Inra
Choisis, J.P.; Thévenet, C.; Gout, J.; Ladet, S.; Sheeren, D.; Gibon, A..
Agriculture is nowadays expected to adopt “multifunctional” land use practice as a contribution to sustainable development of rural areas. We started a participatory research study in the Coteaux de Gascogne (France) to prospect local paths for agricultural systems contribution to landusesustainability. The area considered is a study-site of the Long term Ecosystem Research network. Our first common objective is to understand how family-farm dynamics contribute to land-use change at the landscape level. We started therefore a spatially-explicit and exhaustive study of agricultural land use and its change since the 1950s at a reference area of limited size (4 villages). The method consists in survey at every farmer using land in the area using both a...

Assessment of tropical shrimp aquaculture impact on the environment in tropical countries, using hydrobiology, ecology and remote sensing as helping tools for diagnosis ArchiMer
Fuchs, Jacques; Martin, Jean-louis M.; Populus, Jacques.
After a period of rapid development of the sites (an increase in both reared surface area and production), tropical shrimp aquaculture is currently being faced with critical problems due to economical and ecological constraints. In many countries with favourable conditions for shrimp aquaculture such as indonesia or Vietnam, sites are often badly selected and/or over-exploited. This conducts to sorne extent to decreases or collapses in the production due to the difficulty in predicting the maximum production capacity of the sites. Furthermore, it appears that production sustainability depends on many factors among which socio-economy and ecolo gy are of prime importance. The STD3 project titled « Assessment of tropical shrimp aquaculture impact on the...

Bayesian Model Averaging in the Context of Spatial Hedonic Pricing: An Application to Farmland Values AgEcon
Cotteleer, Geerte; Stobbe, Tracy; van Kooten, G. Cornelis.
Since 1973, British Columbia created an Agricultural Land Reserve to protect farmland from development. In this study, we employ GIS-based hedonic pricing models of farmland values to examine factors that affect farmland prices. We take spatial lag and error dependence into explicit account. However, the use of spatial econometric techniques in hedonic pricing models is problematic because there is uncertainty with respect to the choice of the explanatory variables and the spatial weighting matrix. Bayesian model averaging techniques in combination with Markov Chain Monte Carlo Model Composition are used to allow for both types of model uncertainty.

Borders, Market Size and Urban Growth, The Case of Saxon Towns and the Zollverein in the 19th Century AgEcon
Ploeckl, Florian.
Changes in trade institutions, such as the abolishment of tariff barriers, have a potentially strong impact on economic development. The Zollverein, the 1834 customs union between German states, erased borders in much of central Europe. This paper investigates the Zollverein's economic impact through a study of urban population and its growth in the German state of Saxony. A model of the effect of market access on urban growth is combined with an extensive data set on town populations in Saxony and its neighbors as well as an improved distance measure based on GIS techniques, which take into account elevation patterns, roads, and rivers. The results show that Zollverein membership led to significantly higher growth for towns close to the border with...

Caractérisation hydrologique et microbiologique du bassin versant de Sainte Anne (Plouzané) ArchiMer
Belloir, Jerome.
The coastline has many activities related to water quality such as bathing activities. Coastal catchments are known to be source of microbial input to the marine environment, their flows and runoff bringing important quantities of sediment, bacteria and other particles. Thus, a network of monitoring and modeling may be necessary to prevent economic losses such as a closure of beaches due to contamination. Hence, within the framework of project GIRAC, a modeling of river and E. coli flow in the Sainte-Anne catchment was developed. To implement the model AVSWAT on the catchment, a data collection (stream gauging, E. coli analyses) and work on GIS was necessary. The aim of this study is the hydrological and microbiological characterization of the catchment....
