A locally congenic backcross design in pig: a new regional fine QTL mapping approach miming congenic strains used in mouse Inra
Riquet, J.; Gilbert, H.; Servin, B.; Sanchez, M.P.; Iannuccelli, N.; Billon, Y.; Bidanel, J.P.; Milan, D..
Background: In previous studies, a major QTL affecting fatness and growth has been mapped to pig chromosome1q (SSC1q) using Large White - Meishan intercrosses. A higher fat depth and a larger growth rate have beenreported for the allele of MS origin. Additionally the LW allele showed partial dominance effects over the MS allelefor both traits. In order to refine the QTL mapping interval, advanced backcross generations were produced.Recombinant heterozygous sires were mated to LW sows in order to progeny test the sire segregation of the QTLand refine the QTL localisation. However due to the partial dominance of the LW allele, BC scheme using LW asthe receiving population was not optimal. Results: To overcome the difficulties related to the dominance of the...

A simplified method for characterising agronomic services provided by species-rich grasslands Inra
Duru, M.; Cruz, P.; Theau, J.P..
In order to encourage farmers and their advisors to promote species-rich grasslands, the agronomic services they can provide should be demonstrated. Methods based on functional ecology are promising, but difficult to use in an applied context. Thus, we aimed to construct a simplified method, tailored for non-researchers, for assessing grassland agronomic services. We assess them by focusing on the grass species that was coupled to a leaf dry matter content (LDMC) database. These simplifications are supported by several hypotheses tested in our paper: (i) trade-offs between agronomic properties; (ii) mass ratio hypothesis; and (iii) functional convergence and divergence between grass and dicotyledonous species. The results were based on 37 vegetation...

Analysis of polymorphisms in the insulin-like growth factor 1 receptor (IGF1R) gene from Japanese quail selected for body weight Inra
Moe, H.H.; Shimogiri, T; Kamohiraguma, W.; Isobe, H.; Kawabe, K.; Okamoto, S.; Minvielle, F.; Maeda, Y..
Insulin-like growth factor 1 receptor (IGF1R) is essential for the signalling of growth. In thisstudy, we performed single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) detection in the Japanese quailIGF1R coding region and an association study between SNPs and body weight in two lines(SS and LL) selected for large and small body weight. Of 21 SNPs obtained, a SNP at positionAB292766:c.2293G>A led to the replacement of a valine with an isoleucine (V765I).The two lines were fixed for alternate alleles, with allele encoding valine fixed in the LL line.A significant effect of the SNP genotype was found on 10-week body weight (P < 0.01) andon 4- to 10-week and 6- to 10-week average daily gain (P < 0.05) in the F2 family obtainedfrom lines LL and SS. In six...

Control of leaf growth by abscisic acid: hydraulic or non-hydraulic processes Inra
Tardieu, F.; Parent, B.; Simonneau, T..
Abscisic acid (ABA) affects plant metabolism and water transfers via multiple mechanisms at cell, organ and whole plant levels. These mechanisms translate into contradictory effects on leaf growth, so the literature reports positive, null or negative effects of ABA on leaf growth upon water deficit. We review evidences based on genetic manipulations of ABA biosynthesis, feeding the plant with artificial ABA or partial root drying and provide elements to avoid confusions of effects. We propose that ABA has mainly three effects on growth. (i) Via its controlling effect on stomatal aperture and transpiration rate, an increased concentration of ABA tends to buffer the day-night alternations of leaf growth rate and the negative effect of evaporative demand....

Control of puberty in farmed fish Inra
Taranger, G.L.; Carillo, M.; Schultz, R.W.; Fontaine, P.; Zanuy, S.; Felip, A.; Weltzien, F.A.; Dufour, S.; Karlsen, O.; Norberg, B.; Andersson, E.; Hansen, T..
Puberty comprises the transition from an immature juvenile to a mature adult state of the reproductive system, i.e. the individual becomes capable of reproducing sexually for the first time, which implies functional competence of the brain–pituitary–gonad (BPG) axis. Early puberty is a major problem in many farmed fish species due to negative effects on growth performance, flesh composition, external appearance, behaviour, health, welfare and survival, as well as possible genetic impact on wild populations. Late puberty can also be a problem for broodstock management in some species, while some species completely fail to enter puberty under farming conditions. Age and size at puberty varies between and within species and strains, and are modulated by...

Domestication and nutrition in fish ArchiMer
Cahu, Chantal.
The aim of this paper is to evaluate to what extent, the study of feeding regimes of fish could be valuable to indicate the possibilities and the constraints of their domestication. Though the natural feeding regime of fish seems to be disadvantageous for their domestication, as protein requirement is high, different species could be considered as domesticated. These species are herbivorous, detritivorous, omnivorous as well as carnivorous. In the same way, there are large differences in gut anatomy, but domestication concerns species with or without stomach, and species with short or very long intestine. Nutritional requirements do not allow predicting species that could be domesticated. Some species seem to be able to use vegetable protein in...

Effet de la bactérisation des graines sur la croissance des plants de Cedrus atlantica Manetti Inra
Satrani, B.; El Ouadihi, N.; Guedira, A.; Frey-Klett, P.; Arahou, M.; Garbaye, J..

Leblanc, J.M.; Rancillac, M.; Pradet, A..

Group feeding behavior of brown trout is a correlated response to selection for growth shaped by the environment Inra
Boujard, T.; Ramezi, J.; Vandeputte, M.; Labbé, L.; Mambrini, M..
Group feeding pattern is a response correlated to selection for growth in brown trout. Previous results suggest that the feeding pattern of two lines (NL and SY), selected with the same process at two different fishfarms, differ. This study addresses the following questions: (i) are the patterns differentially fixed by the selection process and if yes (ii) is this explained by the different genetic background of the lines? In a first experiment, we tested if the group feeding behavior can be inherited. We produced and reared under the same experimental conditions selected hybrids (NLS × SYS) and pure SY selected line (SYS). We compared their behavior on self-feeders when reared single or mixed (groups of 500 fish; mean initial BW = 6 g, 90-day period)....

Growth rates of honey bee larva National Institute of Agronomic Research
Bishop, G.H..
The curve of growth of the queen bee larva is exponential during 4 days from hatching of the egg, the weight increasing by a factor of 5 each 24 hours. The weight of the worker larva deviates from this curve and after two days increases at a decreasing rate. The worker matures later than does the queen larva. Volumes both of the cells of the fat body and of their nuclei increase at a decreasing rate. The cytoplasm increases much more rapidly than does the nucleus, from about one-half the cell volume at hatching to nine-tenths at larval maturity. The nuclear changes initiated at beginning of metamorphosis precede the cessation of feeding, and in the queen larva nearly coincide with the sealing over of the wax ceIl, after which the larva continues to feed...
