A synopsis of fern galls in Brazil Biota Neotropica

Abstract Galls are neo-formed plant structures induced by species-specific interaction between an inducing organism and a host plant. Lycophytes and ferns are two distinct plant lineages historically lumped together as pteridophytes. A number of authors suggest low gall frequency in lycophytes and ferns, compared to angiosperms. This study aimed at compiling an updated overview of fern galls in Brazil, providing information on hosts, gall-inducing organisms and associated fauna. The synopsis was compiled using existent data and by updating scientific names and gathering new information obtained by the authors in fieldwork. Distribution of gall-inducing arthropods in areas of deciduous seasonal forest of Parque da Sapucaia (Montes Claros, MG, Brazil): effects of anthropization, vegetation structure and seasonality Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)

Abstract In the present study, we inventoried gall-inducing arthropod species and evaluated the effects of habitat anthropization, vegetation structure and seasonality on this group in areas of deciduous seasonal forest of Parque da Sapucaia, Montes Claros, MG, Brazil. The gall-inducing fauna was sampled between April 2017 and February 2018 from 20 plots distributed in anthropized and preserved habitats. A total of 29 morphospecies of gall-inducing arthropods and 21 species of host plants were recorded. The Fabaceae plant family had the highest number of gall morphospecies (n = 10), while the Cecidomyiidae (Diptera) insect family induced the most galls (41.3%). The genus Apiococcus Hempel (Hemiptera, Eriococcidae), with redescription of two species. Apiococcus Hempel is a genus from Brazil composed of four gall-inducing species. The adult females of two species, Apiococcus globosus Hempel and A. singularis Hempel, from Brazil, are redescribed and illustrated. Keys to the species of the genus and their galls are given.

Three different galls of Bruggmannia spp. (Diptera, Cecidomyiidae) on Guapira opposita (Vell.) Reitz. (Nyctaginaceae) were studied at Restinga of Barra de Maricá, State of Rio de Janeiro. Thirty parasitoid species are associated to these galls. Most of them is generalist and solitary. Hyperparasitoidism is common. The trophic relations among gall makers and parasitoids are presented.

Evidence for a stress hypothesis: hemiparasitism effect on the colonization of Alchornea castaneaefolia A. Juss.uphorbiaceae) by Galling Insects Acta Amazonica

Stressed plants are generally more attacked by galling insects. In this study we investigated the relationship between population abundance and species richness of galling insects on the tree Alchornea castaneaefolia A. JUSS. (Euphorbiaceae), submited to stress induced by the hemiparasite Psittacanthus sp. (Loranthaceae) in the Amazon, Brazil. Branches of A. castaneaefolia attacked by the hemiparasite were more heavily infested by galling insects than non-attacked branches. The field observations partially corroborate the hypothesis that there would be an optimal level of host-plant stress for galling insect establishment.

New distribution record, host plant and notes on natural history of Tomoplagia rudolphi (Lutz & Lima, 1918) (Diptera: Tephritidae) Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)

ABSTRACT In the state of Rio Grande do Sul, there are few records of geographical distribution and host plants to species of Tomoplagia Coquillett, as well as other genera of Tephritidae, especially those associated with plants of the family Asteraceae. Here, we report the first occurrence of Tomoplagia rudolphi (Lutz & Lima, 1918) in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, inducing stem galls in Vernonanthura tweediana (Baker) H. Rob. (Asteraceae, Vernonieae), whose plant becomes a new host record for this species. In this way, is increased to nine species of Tomoplagia recorded for Rio Grande do Sul. Biological and morphological data and photos of gall, larvae, pupae at new host and distribution map of the species in Brazil are provided.

Variation in plant traits, such as size and architecture, has been previously demonstrated as a determinant of gall distribution. Relationships between four Neotropical species of galling insects and shoot vigor Anais da SEB

The plant-vigor hypothesis (PVH) predicts that females of galling insects preferentially oviposit on the most vigorous plant or plant modules, where their offspring performance is highest. We tested the PVH on Neopelma baccharidis Buckhardt (Homoptera: Psyllidae) and Rhoasphondylia friburgensis Tavares (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae) which induce galls on Baccharis dracunculifolia D.C. (Asteraceae), and on two different Cecidomyiidae (Diptera) species that induce galls on Maytenus salicifolia Reiss. (Celastraceae) and Vernonia polyanthes Less (Asteraceae), respectively. Baccharis dracunculifolia, the host plant of the gall maker Neopelma baccharidis Burck., is locally distributed in delimited patches. The effects of the host plant individual (plant height, crown diameter, and crown volume), local (host plant patch), and regional (locality) characteristics on the number of galls were analyzed, in Viçosa (three patches) and in Rio Doce State Park, Marliéria (two patches), Minas Gerais State (20°45'S, 42°50'W; and 19°50'S, 42°30'W, respectively). The number of galls/individual plant increased homogenousliy with plant dimensions on local and regional scale. Trifurcula pallidella (Duponchel, 1843) (Nepticulidae): distribution, biology and immature stages, particularly in Poland Naturalis

Trifurcula pallidella (Duponchel, 1843) is recorded for the first time from 30 localities in south-eastern Poland. The biology is described and illustrated in detail for the first time: the larva makes spindle shaped galls in stems of Chamaecytisus spp., Lembotropis nigricans, and Cytisus procumbens. In Poland it is usually found on dry grassland or edges of woodland on calcareous soils. The larva, pupa and galls are described and illustrated. The distribution is revised and mapped on the basis of material and literature: its occurrence in Germany: Bavaria, Italy mainland and Sicily is confirmed, and new records are given for Corsica and Crete. It is widespread from Southeast Poland southwards throughout the Balkans and eastwards to the Volga, in the West...
