Acute effect of different antidepressants on glycemia in diabetic and non-diabetic rats BJMBR
Gomez,R.; Huber,J.; Tombini,G.; Barros,H.M.T..
Diabetic patients have a 20% higher risk of depression than the general population. Treatment with antidepressant drugs can directly interfere with blood glucose levels or may interact with hypoglycemic agents. The treatment of depression in diabetic patients must take into account variations of glycemic levels at different times and a comparison of the available antidepressant agents is important. In the present study we evaluated the interference of antidepressants with blood glucose levels of diabetic and non-diabetic rats. In a first experiment, male adult Wistar rats were fasted for 12 h. Imipramine (5 mg/kg), moclobemide (30 mg/kg), clonazepam (0.25 mg/kg), fluoxetine (20 mg/kg) sertraline (30 mg/kg) or vehicle was administered. After 30 min, fasting...

Acute exercise and caffeine improve insulin-induced hypoglycemia in normal and malnourished rats Biological Sciences
Babata, Lucas Kazunori Rubira; Malta, Ananda; Godoi, Vilma Aparecida Ferreira de; Pedrosa, Maria Montserrat Diaz.
In food restriction, hypoglycemic episodes can be more severe and persistent. This study assessed the influence of acute exercise and caffeine on the insulin-induced hypoglycemia in freely-fed or malnourished (50% food restriction) young rats. At the age of 60 days, rats under overnight fasting received an insulin injection to cause an episode of hypoglycemia. In some animals, hypoglycemia was preceded by an acute session of exercise, in others, caffeine was orally given 15 minutes after insulin injection; or exercise and caffeine were combined. Blood samples were collected at regular intervals for five hours after insulin injection. A beneficial effect of both exercise or caffeine on the hypoglycemic episode in the malnourished rats was found. In the...

Amylin induces hypoglycemia in mice Anais da ABC (AABC)
Guerreiro,Luiz H.; Silva,Daniel DA; Sola-Penna,Mauro; Mizurini,Daniella M.; Lima,Luís M.T.R..
Amylin is a 37-aminoacid pancreatic protein that exerts control over several metabolic events such as glycemia and lacticemia. Amylin has long been shown to induce increases in arterial plasma glucose. We decided to investigate whether amylin plays additional roles in the glucose metabolism. We evaluated glucose homeostasis using whole blood from the tail tip of fasting, conscious, unrestrained normal and streptozotocyn-induced diabetic mice following subcutaneous administration of mouse amylin. Subcutaneous injection of 1 μg mouse amylin caused a transient decrease in whole blood glucose in both normal and diabetic mice in the absence of insulin. The blood glucose levels were lowest approximately 2 hours after amylin administration, after that they...

Comparative performance of lab tests and blood testing device to monitor glucose, total cholesterol and triacylglycerol in type 2 diabetic patients BJPS
Zubioli,Arnaldo; Batista,Marcia Regina; Stefanello,Talitha Fernandes; Carrara,Marcia Aparecida; Bazotte,Roberto Barbosa.
The performance of lab tests (LT) and blood testing devices (BTD) to monitor glycemia vs. glycated hemoglobin A1c (A1c) were compared. In addition, the performance of blood glucose, total cholesterol (TC) and triacylglycerol measured by LT and BDT were compared. All parameters were measured based on the same blood samples from overnight fasted type 2 diabetic patients (T2DP). Linear regression analysis was used for all comparisons. The results showed that A1c correlated better with LT-glucose (r = 0.58) than BTD-glucose (r = 0.42). Moreover, LT vs. BTD showed r values of 0.90, 0.82 and 0.92 for glucose, TC and triacylglycerol, respectively. It was concluded that the performance of LT-glucose was better than BDT-glucose. Moreover, since triacylycerol and TC...

Efecto antidiabético de los polisacáridos del fruto de xoconostle (Opuntia matudae) en ratas. Colegio de Postgraduados
Calvo Arriaga, Ayne Oliva.

Effect of a soybean and rice beverage on the lipid and glycemic metabolisms in hamsters Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Jaekel,Leandra Zafalon; Rodrigues,Rosane da Silva.
There is a growing interest in functional foods that, apart from their nutritional function, bring health benefits, contributing to wellbeing and/or reducing the risk of certain diseases. The objective of this study was to evaluate the functional effect of a soybean and rice beverage on the ponderal and nutritional parameters and on the lipid and glycemic metabolisms of male hamsters. Four groups of 8 animals were used: Control (commercial feed), C (commercial feed with added cholesterol), B (commercial feed plus beverage) and CB (commercial feed plus cholesterol and beverage). The food efficiency coefficient was equivalent for all the groups. The weight of the liver was on average 28% heavier in groups C and CB than in the other groups, indicating...

The hyperglycemia induced by angiotensin II in rats is mediated by AT1 receptors BJMBR
Machado,L.J.C.; Marubayashi,U.; Reis,A.M.; Coimbra,C.C..
We have shown that the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) is involved in glucose homeostasis during acute hemorrhage. Since almost all of the physiological actions described for angiotensin II were mediated by AT1 receptors, the present experiments were designed to determine the participation of AT1 receptors in the hyperglycemic action of angiotensin II in freely moving rats. The animals were divided into two experimental groups: 1) animals submitted to intravenous administration of angiotensin II (0.96 nmol/100 g body weight) which caused a rapid increase in plasma glucose reaching the highest values at 5 min after the injection (33% of the initial values, P<0.01), and 2) animals submitted to intravenous administration of DuP-753 (losartan), a...

Tityus serrulatus envenoming in non-obese diabetic mice: a risk factor for severity J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Oliveira,Guilherme Honda de; Cerni,Felipe Augusto; Cardoso,Iara Aimê; Arantes,Eliane Candiani; Pucca,Manuela Berto.
Abstract Background In Brazil, accidents with venomous animals are considered a public health problem. Tityus serrulatus (Ts), popularly known as the yellow scorpion, is most frequently responsible for the severe accidents in the country. Ts envenoming can cause several signs and symptoms classified according to their clinical manifestations as mild, moderate or severe. Furthermore, the victims usually present biochemical alterations, including hyperglycemia. Nevertheless, Ts envenoming and its induced hyperglycemia were never studied or documented in a patient with diabetes mellitus (DM). Therefore, this is the first study to evaluate the glycemia during Ts envenoming using a diabetic animal model (NOD, non-obese diabetic). Methods Female mice (BALB/c...
