COMPETITIVE BIDDING ON IMPORT TENDERS: THE CASE OF MINOR OILSEEDS AgEcon
Wilson, William W.; Diersen, Matthew A..
Auctions and bidding play an important role in agricultural marketing. A common and noteworthy application of auctions and bidding is that of import tendering which is used for both price determination and the allocation of purchases among sellers. In this study we develop a model to evaluate bidding strategies and competition in Egyptian oilseeds imports. Information included the values of bids submitted by each supplier in each tender over the period 1990 to 1993. Results indicate that generally bids could be predicted for all bidders with a relatively high degree of confidence using simple relationships and accessible data. In addition, for each oil tender there appeared to be groups of bidders characterized by differences in their bid functions....

Dietary Assessment of Major Trends in U.S. Food Consumption, 1970-2005 AgEcon
Wells, Hodan Farah; Buzby, Jean C..
This report examines major trends in the amount of food available for consumption in the United States between 1970 and 2005 using data from the ERS Food Availability (Per Capita) Data System. The report also estimates whether Americans are meeting Federal dietary recommendations for each of the major food groups by comparing the data with dietary recommendations in the 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans and the MyPyramid Food Guidance System. Findings show that Americans do not meet the Federal dietary recommendations. In order to meet them, Americans would need to substantially lower their intake of added fats, refined grains, and added sugars and sweeteners and increase their consumption of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lowfat milk and milk...

HARMONIZATION AND CONVERGENCE OF CANADIAN AND U.S. GRAIN AND OILSEEDS POLICIES: 1985-1996 AgEcon
Gray, Richard S.; Smith, Vincent H..
The United States and Canada share the longest common border and largest bilateral trading relationship in the world. Recent trading agreements--CUSTA, NAFTA and WTO--have enhanced trade by encouraging elimination of many remaining trade barriers. However, one cause for concern about the effectiveness of these trade agreements has been the frequency of Canadian-U.S. trade disputes over bilateral wheat and barley trade arrangements and trade flows. To some extent, these disputes have arisen because of differences in and lack of harmonization between the domestic and trade policies implemented by the two countries, although other political factors have also clearly been important causes of these disagreements. Since 1986, many dimensions of the agricultural...

Linking Farmers to Markets: The Case of Grain Marketing Information in Western Kenya AgEcon
Odendo, Martins; De Groote, Hugo.
Market liberalization created a situation where there are no guaranteed grain prices, no central information source and the need for marketing information increased. Unfortunately, most farmers have little or no access to marketing information. This study evaluates farmers’ perceptions of importance of marketing information; identifies farmers’ sources of grain marketing information; determine farmers’ confidence in and use of marketing information; and assesses determinants farmers’ willingness (WTP) to pay for marketing information. Data used in this study were generated using a structured questionnaire in a survey that covered a random sample of 120 households in traditionally grain surplus-and deficit zones of Kenya. The data were analyzed by...

Infoteca-e
FREITAS-SILVA, O.; CASTRO, I. M. de; TROBETE, F. M.; ASCHERI, J. L. R.; DIREITO, G. M.; PORTO, Y. D..

COELHO,C.G.; DALVI,L.P.; OLIVEIRA,L.S.G.; OLIVEIRA,F.L..
ABSTRACT: Improper management of weeds is one of the causes of low bean yield, as it is very susceptible to interference due to their slow initial growth. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of dayflower on grain yield and nutrient accumulation of bean cultivars. The experiment was carried out in a screened house, in 5 L pots, in a 2 x 4 factorial scheme. Factor 1 corresponded to the presence or absence of weeds, and factor 2 bean cultivars: BRS Pontal, BRS Agreste, BRS Ametista and BRS Estilo. The experiment was arranged in a completely randomized design with five replications. The coexistence of bean and weed was maintained throughout the crop cycle. Chlorophyll content, number of pods per plant, number of grains per plant, nutrients contents (N -...

The objective of this work was to evaluate, by means of the exchange rate, the profitability of two products directed toward the domestic market and two export products. Other objective was to identify productivity growth compensated the decrease of prices. The geometric rates of the production, area and productivity growth were estimated. The exchange rate was estimated by the relation between the index of the inputs prices and the index of the product prices. The results show a great trend of deterioration of the exchange terms for all the analyzed products. Evidenced that these effects more was been accented for rice and maize. Such behavior associates it the fact of the rice cultures and of maize to be destined to the domestic market, its demands have...
