Citrus asymmetric somatic hybrids produced via fusion of gamma-irradiated and iodoacetamide-treated protoplasts PAB
Bona,Claudine Maria de; Gould,Jean Howe; Miller Jr,J. Creighton; Stelly,David; Louzada,Eliezer Silva.
The objective of this study was to produce citrus somatic asymmetric hybrids by fusing gamma-irradiated protoplasts with iodoacetamide-treated protoplasts. Protoplasts were isolated from embryogenic suspension cells of grapefruit (Citrus paradisi Macfad.) cultivars Ruby Red and Flame, sweet oranges (C. sinensis Osbeck) 'Itaboraí', 'Natal', Valencia', and 'Succari', from 'Satsuma' (C. unshiu Marcow.) and 'Changsha' mandarin (C. reticulata Blanco) and 'Murcott' tangor (C. reticulata x C. sinensis). Donor protoplasts were exposed to gamma rays and receptor protoplasts were treated with 3 mmol L-1 iodoacetamide (IOA), and then they were fused for asymmetric hybridization. Asymmetric embryos were germinated, and the resulting shoots were either grafted onto...

ECONOMIC ANALYSIS OF TEMIK ON CITRUS IN THE INDIAN RIVER AREA IN SOUTHEASTERN FLORIDA AgEcon
Blakeley, Lindsey; Weldon, Richard N.; Fairchild, Gary F..
Temik [R](aldicarb) is a pesticide labeled for use on several citrus crops to control rust mite, whitefly, nematode and brown citrus aphid pests. Analysis of previous research experiments indicates that this pesticide is beneficial to both orange and grapefruit production and that both cost savings and higher yields can be experienced in many types of groves. Actual grove data shows that net returns for mature grapefruit that receive Temik [R] can be $500 per acre greater than net returns for identical acreage that uses other pest control options. Also, based on grove reset data it is shown that with an application of Temik [R] the resulting increased yields for three-year-old trees more than cover the additional cost of applying the Temik [R].

MARKETING OPPORTUNITIES FOR JAMAICA’S GRAPEFRUIT INDUSTRY AgEcon
Evans, Edward A.; Nalampang, Sikavas; Spreen, Thomas H..
Several Caribbean sugar producing countries are actively looking for viable alternatives to recover some of the expected lost revenues due to the WTO (World Trade Organization) ruling that sugar subsidies in the European Union (EU) are illegal. One alternative worth considering is exporting fresh grapefruits to the EU. This marketing opportunity comes about as the United States of America (U.S.), the world’s leading grapefruit producer and exporter (over half of world production), has suffered a series of recent setbacks (citrus canker, citrus greening diseases, and devastating hurricanes) that threaten the future of that industry. Specifically, grapefruit and pomelo production in the U.S. has declined steadily since 2000 (from 2,506 thousand metric tons...

U.S. Citrus Import Demand: Seasonality and Substitution AgEcon
Baldwin, Katherine L.; Jones, Keithly G..
Citrus fruits make up one-fifth of all fresh fruit consumed in the United States. Given the increasing importance of imported citrus in the diet of American consumers, it is perhaps surprising that no import demand analysis of U.S. citrus has been conducted. Using quarterly U.S. import data for six citrus commodities, we employed a demand systems model and evaluated aspects of seasonality. The results suggest wide variations in price responses to different types of imported citrus. The average amplitude and phase shift suggest that all citrus fruits exhibit some seasonality in their imports, likely a result of peak harvesting schedules of exporters.
