A proposed index to assess quality of waters from desalination plants AGRIAMBI
Antas,Francisco P. de S.; Freitas,Jair J. R. de; Oliveira,André M. de; Dias,Nildo da S.; Lima,Alexandre de O.; Sousa Neto,Osvaldo N. de.
ABSTRACT Reverse osmosis is the technology commonly used to produce fresh water from brackish groundwater. Due to the reject brine generated in desalination plants by reverse osmosis, vulnerability assessment to define critical areas to monitor waters from desalination has been an important tool for delineating the monitoring networks required for surveillance of potential salinization sites. The objective of this study was to assess the quality of waters sampled in desalination plants by a quality index, which provides a relative assessment of water vulnerability to potential salinization. The present study proposes an index to assess the quality of waters from desalination plants initially using the chemical parameters electrical conductivity, sodium...

Effects of agriculture on ground water in a recharge area of Guarany Aquifer in Brazil. Repositório Alice
CERDEIRA, A. L.; PESSOA, M. C. P. Y.; BOLONHEZI, D.; GOMES, M. A. F.; SPADOTTO, C. A.; SOUZA, M. D. de; FERRACINI, V. L.; QUEIROZ, R.H.C.; LANCHOTE, V. L.; QUEIROZ, S. C. do N. de; F. NETO, C..
The region of Ribeirão Preto City located in São Paulo State, southeastern Brazil, is an important and highly mechanized sugar cane producing area. It is also an important recharge area of the Guarany aquifer, which provides water to several cities and rural communities in the region. Research has been conducted in this region since 1995 to assess the behavior of herbicides, such as atrazine, simazine, ametryn, tebuthiuron, diuron, 2,4-D, picloram, and hexazinone, applied in the area. Nitrate applied as nitrogen fertilizer was also evaluated. Espraiado watershed, located over the recharge area, was chosen for this study. Water samples were collected from seven wells located inside the watershed and from surface water of Espraiado stream. Other samples were...

Evaluation of occurrence of NO3-, coliform and atrazine in a karst aquifer, Colombo, PR.
No entanto, existem poucos estudos desta natureza no Brasil.

MARKET-BASED SOLUTIONS TO ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS: DISCUSSION AgEcon
Woodward, Richard T..
There is rapidly growing interest in the use of market-based (MB) instruments in environmental policy. The papers in this session discuss three relatively new areas for such policies: groundwater contamination, nonpoint source surface-water pollution and carbon sequestration. The papers point out the potential for MB policies in these areas, but significant challenges remain. This comment highlights challenges related to five issues: monitoring and enforcement, trading ratios, baselines, transaction costs, and risk and uncertainty. All these issues must be addressed before MB policies can take the full step from economic theory to regulatory reality.

Nitrate in groundwater in Ribeirão Preto city area in Brazil. Repositório Alice
CERDEIRA, A. L.; PARAIBA, L. C.; KATAGUIRI, K.; BOLONHEZI, D.; GOMES, M. A. F.; SPADOTTO, C. A.; FARJANI NETO, C.; MATALLO, M. B.; MOMM, H..
The region of Ribeirão Preto City, southeastern Brazil, is an important sugar cane and recharge area for groundwater of the Guarany aquifer. This research was conducted to evaluate the potential contamination of groundwater with nitrates in the area and in surrounding municipal wells. No significant amount of nitrate was found in the recharge agricultural area. However, nitrate levels were detected at concentrations higher than the Maximum Concentration Level (MCL) of 6.0 mg/L in a downtown, urban, well located away from agriculture, which had no history of nitrogen application, reaching values higher than the maximum risk coefficient for infants (RC) of 1.0.

Something in the Water? Testing for Groundwater Quality Information in the Housing Market AgEcon
McLaughlin, Patrick A..
I test the level of information regarding possible groundwater contamination in the residential real estate market in Washington County, Minnesota. An approximately seven square-mile trichloroethylene plume has affected hundreds of households’ water supplies since at least 1988 in the region. I find that homeowners were initially well-informed by market forces, but were later somewhat misinformed by government actions regarding the potential of water contamination from the plume. A disclosure law passed in 2003 may have added new, low-cost, and imperfect information to the market that could explain the change in informational awareness.
