A nutrient density standard for vegetables and fruits: nutrients per calorie and nutrients per unit cost Inra
Darmon, N.; Darmon, M.; Maillot, M.; Drewnowski, A..
Objectives: The Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2005 recommended that consumers give priority to nutrient dense foods, those that contain substantial amounts of key nutrients in relation to the dietary energy they provide. This study developed a scoring system to estimate the nutritional adequacy of vegetables and fruits, on a per weight, per calorie, and per unit cost basis. Data: we used a French national food composition database for 637 foods, including 129 vegetables and fruits. Mean national retail prices were obtained for each food. Methods: The nutrient adequacy score was defined as the mean of percent daily values for 16 nutrients, based on 100 g of food. The nutrient density score and the nutrient to-price ratio were the mean of percent daily...

Macronutrient intake and modulation on chylomicron production and clearance Inra
Lairon, D..
The extent and kinetics of postprandial changes are highly variable and are modulated by numerous factors including diet, lifestyle conditions, genetic background and pathological conditions. This review focuses on dietary factors affecting postprandial chylomicron and lipoprotein metabolism in humans. The first key step in the process is fat digestion within the stomach and small intestine which can be modulated by fat and dietary fiber amounts and types. The second key step is intestinal absorption per se. The uptake and secretion of absorbed nutrients in chylomicrons is affected by numerous factors, including nutrients themselves. The amount of dietary triglycerides as well as the nature of fatty acids ingested from habitual diet or present in a test...

Quantifying the contribution of foods with unfavourable nutrient profiles to nutritionally adequate diets Inra
Maillot, M.; Drewnowski, A.; Vieux, F.; Darmon, N..
That ‘all foods can fit’ into a healthy diet is a long-standing principle of dietetic practice. The present study quantified the relative contributions of foods to encourage and foods to limit, using new techniques of individual diet optimisation and nutrient profiling. Individual foods from every food group were assigned to four nutrient profile classes based on the French SAIN,LIM system. Foods with the most favourable nutrient profiles were in class 1, and foods with the least favourable nutrient profiles were in class 4. An optimised diet that met the recommendations for thirty-two nutrients and that respected the existing eating habits was designed for each adult in the nationally representative ‘Enquête Individuelle et Nationale sur les Consommations...

rs5888 variant of SCARB1 gene is a possible susceptibility factor for age-related macular degeneration Inra
Zerbib, J.; Seddon, J.M.; Richard, F.; Reynolds, R.; Levéziel, N.; Benlian, P.; Borel, P.; Feingold, J.; Munnich, A.; Soubrane, G.; Kaplan, J.; Rozet, J.M.; Souied, E.H..
Major genetic factors for age-related macular degeneration (AMD) have recently been identified as susceptibility risk factors, including variants in the CFH gene and the ARMS2 LOC387715/HTRA1locus. Our purpose was to perform a case-control studyin two populations among individuals who did not carry risk variants for CFHY402H and LOC387715 A69S (ARMS2), called‘‘study’’ individuals, in order to identify new genetic risk factors. Based on a candidate gene approach, we analyzed SNPrs5888 of the SCARB1 gene, coding for SRBI, which is involved in the lipid and lutein pathways. This study was conducted ina French series of 1241 AMD patients and 297 controls, and in a North American series of 1257 patients with advanced AMDand 1732 controls. Among these...
