Effect of the queen on worker reproduction and new queen production in the bumble bee Bombus terrestris Inra
Lopez-Vaamonde, C.; Brown, R.M.; Lucas, E.R.; Pereboom, J.J.M.; Jordan, W.C.; Bourke, A.F.G..
We tested the hypotheses that a non-volatile pheromone inhibiting worker egg-laying and queen development produced by Bombus terrestris queens has effects transferable (a) from workers to other workers or larvae, or (b) on wax. We subdivided small, young colonies with a single mesh screen (Experiment 1) and larger, older colonies with a double mesh screen (Experiment 2). One treatment (in both experiments) involved the transfer of workers, and one treatment (in Experiment 2 only) involved the transfer of wax, from the queenright to the queenless compartments. Queenlessness induced significantly earlier onset of worker aggression (followed by egg-laying) in all treatments in both experiments, and significantly earlier queen production in all treatments in...

Identification of floral volatiles involved in recognition of oilseed rape flowers, Brassica napus by honeybees, Apis mellifera Inra
Blight, M.M.; Le Métayer, M.; Pham-Delègue, M.H.; Pickett, J.A.; Marion-Poll, F.; Wadhams, L.J..
Volatiles from oilseed rape, Brassica napus, flowers were sampled by air entrainment and their relevance to the natural odor profile of the flowers was confirmed by conditioned proboscis extension (CPE) assays with honeybee, Apis mellifera L., foragers. Coupled gas chromatography (GC)-CPE analysis of the air entrainment samples was used to locate key compounds involved in the recognition of B. napus flowers, and the compounds were then identified using coupled gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and comparison with authentic samples. Six regions of the gas chromatograms elicited CPE responses from bees previously conditioned to the total extract, and from these areas 16 compounds were identified that elicited CPE activity from conditioned bees when tested...

INVAGRAINES - Invasions de peuplements forestiers par des insectes séminiphages exotiques : mécanismes, conséquences écologiques et moyens de surveillance Inra
Roques, A.; Auger-Rozenberg, M.A.; Boivin, S.; Cariou, M.L.; Silvain, J.F.; Fady, B..
The project aimed at contributing to understand the ecological and genetic mechanisms underlying the possibilities of establishment of exotic insects in the genus Megastigmus (Hymenoptera: Torymidae), specialized in the exploitation of forest seeds, and at defining suitable methods of monitoring and management of the invasive insect populations. For that, we intended to compare two distinct models host seed/ Megastigmus, crossing different first date of invasion and taxonomic structure of the forests: (i) true firs (Abies)/Megastigmus where the resource, indigenous, is exploited by a native species, M. suspectus, in competition with at least 5 invasive species of North American origin, and (ii) true cedars (Cedrus)/Megastigmus where the resource, itself...

Levels of polyandry and intracolonial genetic relationships in Apis florea Inra
Oldroyd, B.P.; Smolenski, A.J.; Cornuet, J.M.; Wongsiri, S.; Estoup, A.; Rinderer, T.E.; Crozier, R.H..
DNA was extracted from worker and drone pupae of each of five colonies of the dwarf honey bee Apis florea. Polymerase chain reactions (PCR) were conducted on DNA extracts using five sets of primers known to amplify microsatellite loci in A. mellifera. Based on microsatellite allele distributions, queens of the five colonies mated with at least 5–14 drones. This is up to 3 times previous maximum estimates obtained from sperm counts. The discrepancy between sperm count and microsatellite estimates of the number of matings in A. florea suggests that despite direct injection of semen into the spermatheacal duct, either A. florea drones inject only a small proportion of their semen, or queens are able to rapidly expel excess semen after mating. A model of...

L’impact des insectes parasites des graines sur les capacités de régénération naturelle des peuplements de cèdre de l’Atlas et de sapin pectiné en Languedoc-Roussillon Inra
Candau, J.N.; Boivin, T.; Chalon, A..
