Within the frame of the National Program (PNM), 'Assessment of Marine Tunisian Resources' (1996-1999), two prospecting surveys on small pelagic fishes, have been led in narrow collaboration with French Institute IFREMER. Their objectives were to specify the relative fishes abundance, their spatial-temporal variability but also to quantify the maximum sustainable yield (MSY) of this resource. A third important goal was to familiarize a Tunisian scientist team, with numerical methods and data processing used during the cruises (reading of echograms, treatments of data, etc.) in stocks assessment. It is known that the indirect stocks assessment methods of small pelagic species is not reliable, reason for which we opted to apply echo - integration techniques....

Sequential population analysis on Long Tail Hake (Macruronus magellanicus)from the Southwest Atlantic. Years 1985-1995. VPA on the Long Tail Hake (Macruronus magellanicus), based on data covering the years 1985 up to 1995, was performed to assess the current state of the stock. Simulation trials, inducing uncertainty about both the natural mortality rate and recruitment were also accomplished, to evaluate the risk of overfishing which is associated to different fishing alternatives, always under the assumption of a single and closed Long Tail Hake population. Análisis secuencial de la población de polaca (Micromesistius australis) en el período 1987-1997 ajustado con valores de rendimiento por unidad de esfuerzo de pesqueros comerciales. OceanDocs

The current status of southern blue whiting Micromesistius australis stock is described. A single, closed fish population is assumed to inhabit the SW Atlantic. Based on catch data corresponding to years 1987-1997, a sequential analysis on the stock is carried out (Cohort Analysis). Under an adaptative framework, catch per unit of effort data from commercial vessels are used to fit the model. Two commercial fleets are used in the fitting, i.e. Polish vessels (1987-1994)and Argentine surimi factory vessels (1991-1997). Results indicate that both, total stock biomass and spawning stock biomass would have declined. Gain contribution by stratification in hake (Merluccius hubbsi) biomass estimation with respect to a simple random sampling based on the same sample size is analyzed. Considering as objective hake biomass assessment, curves which relate precision reached in estimations to the sample size are established. Data were from total hake biomass surveys carried out from 1996 through 1999 hake management units distributed North and South of 41°S Argentine Sea are analyzed separately. The status of hake (Merluccius hubbsi) resource south of 41°S in the Argentine Sea was evaluated with the Biomass Dynamic Model of Pella and Tomlinson. Results indicate that the population was overexploited and in a low biological production level (B99 BMSY1 because, as of 1998, catches always exceeded the surplus production corresponding to each year and the (MSY) Maximum Sustainable Yield. In 1993 increase of landings accelerated declination of biomass. For 1999 the MSY was estimated at 244,773 t and the replacement catch at 147,389 t. Landings corresponding to 1998 surpassed the MSY in 145,000 t and the replacement catch in 242,611 t.

This paper summarizes the present knowledge on Merluccius hubbsi and its fishery in Argentina, based on the model proposed by the Technical Secretary of Comisión Técnica Mixta del Frente Marítimo, in 1990. It includes the taxonomic location of the species, its geographical distribution, stock unity, structure and population dynamics. It describes the fishing gear and fishing operations and presents the available information on selectivity and discards. The paper shows the data landings separated by fleet. Exploitation regulatory measures in force are included.

The fishing of the mussel (Mytilus edulis platensis)off the Buenos Aires coast was alternatively carried out over two main grounds: "Faro Querandí" and "Quequén". The fluctuations of fishing periods on these grounds must have been determined by economic considerations. An abandoned bed may be considere, for practical purposes, depleted.The understanding of the dynamics of this spatially distributed stock could enable us to link more closely the biological cycles with those of the fishing activity. Rotative fishing is suggested as a managment strategy for this fishery.

Two pelagic surveys to study were carried out during 1993. Those surveys covered the regions inhabited by either the bonaerensis stock in october (34-41°S)and the patagonian stock in November - December (41-45°30'S). Pre-stratified random sampling designs, including two random steps to allocate the transects, were adopted to perform the acoustic sampling by echo integration. A midwater trawl net (9-16 m vertical opening, 10 mm mesh-sized codend)was used to collect fish samples. The biomass of the northern stock was acoustically estimated to be about 1,45 million tons, whereas that of the southern stock was almost 740,000 t. The San Matias Gulf (Argentine Sea) fishery was historically developed and based on the catching of a target species: the common hake Merluccius hubbsi. There are also other marketable species such as the savorin Seriolella porosa. The presence of this species in the gulf is characterized by its abundance, population structure and biology. Estado de explotación del recurso besugo (Epigonus crassicaudus) en Chile OceanDocs

The exploitation status of cardinalfish (Epigonus crassicaudus) yielded in Chile between 33° to 41°S was analyzed. An indirect assessment was performed between 1997 and 2003 through size-structured model with a transition matrix defining the changes among sizes. The model was calibrated using size structures, official landings, catch-per-unit of effort (CPUE) taken from commercial fishing logbooks and standardized by generalized linear models (GLM). After 7 years of an intense fishery activity, we concluded that the cardinalfish resource in Chile is on the recruitment overfishing limit. Estimación de la biomasa de adultos desovantes de la anchoíta (Engraulis anchoita)en el área costera bonaerense durante la primavera de 1981 y análisis comparativo de los recuentos de ictioplancton con redes de diferentes mallas OceanDocs

A bongo sampler fifted with nets of two different mesh sizes, 330 and 505 u. was used to collected 137 ichthyoplankton samples in the coastal areas off Buenos Aires Province in October, 1981. The efficiency of the two meshes for catching anchovy eggs and larvae and total ichthyoplankton was examined. The statistical analysis of the samples shows that there are no significant differences between the numbers of anchovy and total eggs collected by the different meshes. As regards anchovy and total larvae the finer mesh showed as significantly higher catching efficiency. The results of this partial estimate do not suggest that a major revision of the total assessment of the complete stock is necessary.

En el presente informe se entregan los resultados finales del proyecto FIP 2003-34, cuyo objetivo general fue estimar mediante métodos in situ, la fuerza de blanco de las especies merluza del sur y merluza de cola (Merluccius australis y Macruronus magellanicus). En primer lugar durante el desarrollo del proyecto, se debió proponer un enfoque metodológico dirigido a efectuar las mediciones de fuerza de blanco considerando las características del recurso y los medios tecnológicos disponibles. El estudio estuvo orientado a disponer de un diagnóstico de la pesquería de centolla (Lithodes santolla) y centollón (Paralomis granulosa) en la región de Magallanes y Antártica Chilena sobre la base de antecedentes bilógico pesqueros recogidos en campañas específicas de pesca y puertos de desmbarque, además de evaluar las medidas de administración vigentes y proponer eventuales nuevas medidas. Se inició el 26 de agosto de 2002 y la toma de información de terreno terminó a fines de noviembre de 2003.

An analysis is presented of reproduction aspects of Argentine Sea blue whiting. The species spawns in the study area mostly during August and September, although some spawners have been detected even in November. Total length at 50-per-cent maturity was 35,4 cm for the males and 38.0 for the females. Significant differences between the length of maturity for individuals of the continental shelf compared to those of the slope, have been obtained. The southern blue whiting is a discontinuous spawner, showing one annual reproduction peak. Whitemouth croaker (Micropogonias furnieri)has a broad distribution along the Atlantic coast of the Americas, from Mexico to the south of the Province of Buenos Aires, Argentina. At the southern end of distribution, Argentina and Uruguay catch the species with different commercial fleet types bay or creek, coastal and off-shore and modalities of bottom trawling with doors and paired trawling.
