A hybrid zone between Bathymodiolus mussel lineages from eastern Pacific hydrothermal vents ArchiMer
Johnson, Shannon B.; Won, Yong-jin; Harvey, Julio B. J.; Vrijenhoek, Robert C..
Background: The inhabitants of deep-sea hydrothermal vents occupy ephemeral island-like habitats distributed sporadically along tectonic spreading-centers, back-arc basins, and volcanically active seamounts. The majority of vent taxa undergo a pelagic larval phase, and thus varying degrees of geographical subdivision, ranging from no impedance of dispersal to complete isolation, often exist among taxa that span common geomorphological boundaries. Two lineages of Bathymodiolus mussels segregate on either side of the Easter Microplate, a boundary that separates the East Pacific Rise from spreading centers connected to the Pacific-Antarctic Ridge. Results: A recent sample from the northwest flank of the Easter Microplate contained an admixture of northern...

A hybrid zone of two toad sister species, Rhinella atacamensis and R. arunco (Anura: Bufonidae), defined by a consistent altitudinal segregation in watersheds RChHN
CORREA,CLAUDIO; MÉNDEZ,MARCO A; ARAYA,SERGIO; LOBOS,GABRIEL; PALMA,R. EDUARDO.
Delimiting the spatial extension of a hybrid zone is essential to understand its historical origin and to identify the geographical and/or environmental factors which delimit it. Rhinella atacamensis and R. arunco are two sister species which together inhabit Chile between 25° and 38° S. Their distribution limits coincide at about 32° S, where recently it was reported that they hybridize in a small watershed (Pupío creek). Although the genetic evidence suggests that these two species form a hybrid swarm, they are not mixed homogeneously in the entire watershed, but rather are spatially segregated: R. arunco is found in the lower part of the creek and R. atacamensis in the higher part. An extensive exploration north and south of 32° S revealed other...

A KOMPOLTI ŐSZI ÁRPA NEMESÍTÉS HELYE EURÓPÁBAN AgEcon
Muranyi, Istvan; Simon, Anna.
A növénynemesítés fokozatosan romló működési körülményei, a hatékony marketing és a vetőmagkereskedelem hiányosságai, a külföldi fajták nyomása következtében több növényfajban a hazai nemesítés jelentősége csökkent az utóbbi 20 évben, sőt néhány növényfaj nemesítése Magyarországon meg is szűnt. A Kompolton folyó őszi árpa nemesítés eredményesen állt helyt a külföldi fajtaelőállítók nyomásának.

Additional results and discussion to the paper: Asymmetric viability of reciprocal-cross hybrids between crested and marbled newts (Triturus cristatus and T. marmoratus) Naturalis
Arntzen, J.W.; Jehle, R.; Bardakci, F.; Burke, T.; Wallis, G.P..
Hybridization between divergent lineages often results in reduced hybrid viability. Here we report findings from a series of independent molecular analyses over several seasons on four life stages of F1 hybrids between the newts Triturus cristatus and T. marmoratus. These two species form a bimodal hybrid zone of broad overlap in France, with F1 hybrids making up about 4% of the adult population. We demonstrate strong asymmetry in the direction of the cross, with one class (cristatus-mothered) making up about 90% of F1 hybrids. By analyzing embryos and hatchlings, we show that this asymmetry is not due to prezygotic effects, as both classes of hybrid embryos are present at similar frequencies, implicating differential selection on the two hybrid classes...

Africanization in the United States: Replacement of Feral European Honeybees (Apis mellifera L.) by an African Hybrid Swarm IPB - Escola Superior Agrária
Pinto, M. Alice; Rubink, William L.; Patton, John C.; Coulson, Robert N.; Johnston, J. Spencer.
The expansion of Africanized honeybees from South America to the southwestern United States in 50 years is considered one of the most spectacular biological invasions yet documented. In the American tropics, it has been shown that during their expansion Africanized honeybees have low levels of introgressed alleles from resident European populations. In the United States, it has been speculated, but not shown, that Africanized honeybees would hybridize extensively with European honeybees. Here we report a continuous 11-year study investigating temporal changes in the genetic structure of a feral population from the southern United States undergoing Africanization. Our microsatellite data showed that (1) the process of Africanization involved both maternal...

Biosafety Evaluation of Transgenic Potatoes: Genc Flow from Transgenic Potatoes Taiwan Agricultural Research Institute
Anthony J. Conner.
[[abstract]]A potential concern associated with the release of transgenic crops is the risk of gene flow to neighboring crops of the same species or to related species. In potato there is little accurate information or experience on effective pollination distances for gene flow between plants. The incidence of intraspecific or interspecific pollination as a basis for gene flow has only received minimal attention since true seed production is unimportant for plant propagation. Gene flow of transgenes from potato crops can arise from several different paths. The most obvious is from true seeds arising on neighboring non-genetically modified (GM) plants, either potatoes or other Solanum species, following pollen dispersal from transgenic potato crops....

Combined use of mitochondrial and nuclear genetic markers further reveal immature marine turtle hybrids along the South Western Atlantic Genet. Mol. Biol.
Brito,Cíntia; Vilaça,Sibelle Torres; Lacerda,Ana Luzia; Maggioni,Rodrigo; Marcovaldi,Maria Ângela; Vélez-Rubio,Gabriela; Proietti,Maíra Carneiro.
Abstract Marine turtle hybridization is usually sporadic and involves reports of only a few individuals; however, Brazilian populations have high hybridization rates. Here we investigated the presence of hybrids in morphologically identified immature hawksbills (Eretmochelys imbricata) along the South Western Atlantic (SWA). We sequenced one mitochondrial (D-Loop) and three nuclear DNA (RAG1, RAG2, and CMOS) markers to better understand the patterns and characteristics of hybrids. We identified 22 hybrids (n = 270), 11 of them at the extreme South of the SWA. Uruguay had the highest hybrid frequency in the SWA (~37.5%) followed by southern Brazil with 30%. These are common areas for loggerheads (Caretta caretta) but uncommon for hawksbills, and these...

Comparative cytogenetic studies of Bufo ictericus, B. paracnemis (Amphibia, Anura) and an intermediate form in sympatry Genet. Mol. Biol.
Azevedo,MFC; Foresti,F.; Ramos,PRR; Jim,J.
Specimens of Bufo ictericus, Bufo paracnemis and a third type, considered an intermediate subgroup between these species, were cytogenetically studied by conventional Giemsa staining, C-banding and staining of the nucleolus organizer region (NOR). The nuclear DNA content and seroproteins were also analyzed to characterize these species, and verify the possibility of hybridization between them. Karyotypes and cytogenetic markers were essentially equal on the basis of the methods used. The DNA nuclear content found was 6.25 ± 0.30 pg/DNA in Bufo ictericus; 7.57 ± 0.40 pg/DNA in Bufo paracnemis and 7.04 ± 0.29 pg/DNA in the intermediate subgroup. Eletrophoresis of total blood serum in Bufo ictericus, Bufo paracnemis and the intermediate specimens revealed a...

Comparative study of shell shape and muscle scar pigmentation in the closely related cupped oysters Crassostrea angulata, C. gigas and their reciprocal hybrids ArchiMer
Batista, Frederico; Ben-hamadou, Radhouan; Fonseca, Vera; Taris, Nicolas; Ruano, Francisco; Reis-henriques, Maria; Boudry, Pierre.
The taxonomic status of the cupped oysters Crassostrea angulata and C. gigas has received considerable attention in the last decades. Based on larval shell morphology, experimental hybridization, allozymes and nuclear DNA studies several authors have considered these two taxa as being synonymous. However, mitochondrial data showed clear genetic differences between the two taxa. In addition, microsatellite-based studies and cytogenetic studies have also provided evidence that supports their differentiation. Considerable differences have also been observed at the phenotypic level in terms of growth rate and ecophysiological parameters. In the present study, C. angulata from Sado estuary (Portugal) and C. gigas from Seudre estuary (France) were collected and...

Cytogenetic study in natural hybrids of Callithrix (Callitrichidae: Primates) in the Atlantic forest of the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Nogueira,Denise M.; Ferreira,Ana Maria R.; Goldschmidt,Beatriz; Pissinatti,Alcides; Carelli,Juliane B.; Verona,Carlos E..
In the Atlantic forest of Rio de Janeiro, Callithrix aurita (É. Geoffroy in Humboldt, 1812) is a native species vulnerable to extinction and C. jacchus (Linnaeus, 1758) and C. penicillata (É. Geoffroy, 1812) are invasive species. The major threats to the native species are habitat degradation and hybridization, although there are currently no genetic data about natural hybrids available. Previous studies have revealed that species of the Callithrix genus are extremely homogeneous in their karyotypes with the exceptions of the morphology and size of the Y chromosome and its nucleolar organizer region (NOR) banding pattern. Three male marmosets captured in the wild in Guapimirim municipality, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, considered as possible hybrids between C....

Cytogenetics and Molecular Genetic Analysis of Chimerism in Marmosets (Callithrix: Primates) Anais da ABC (AABC)
SILVA,MONIQUE O.M.; ARMADA,JORGE LUÍS A. DE; VERONA,CARLOS EDUARDO S.; HELIODORO,GABRIELA; NOGUEIRA,DENISE M..
ABSTRACT The birth of fraternal twins is a characteristic frequently observed in callitrichids. Cytogenetic studies have demonstrated hematopoietic chimerism in marmosets with the occurrence of two cell lines 2n=46,XX/46,XY in females and males co-twins, without phenotypic changes. Amplification by PCR have also been used to verify the presence of the SRY gene in female chimaeras. Our aim was to verify the occurrence of chimerism in Callithrix sp. individuals considered as hybrids according to their intermediate phenotypes between C. jacchus and C. penicillata. Blood samples from 37 Callithrix sp. individuals were collected. Hematopoietic chimerism 2n=46,XX/46,XY was detected by cytogenetic analysis in five individuals, three males and two females. A...

Dealing with Environmental Issues of GM Crops in an Isolated Place We Call Home Taiwan Agricultural Research Institute
Allis M. Wieczofek.
[[abstract]]Island populations have a much higher risk of extinction than their mainland counterparts for a number of reasons. Particular concern has been voiced that gene flow and hybridization between agricultural crops and native plant species may exacerbate their precarious position, especially if the gene flow occurs from crops developed through recombinant DNA technologies. Horizontal gene transfer (HGT) and vertical gene transfer (VGT) are the two possible ways for gene flow and introgression to occur. VGT is more likely to facilitate gene transfer between agricultural crops and native plant species, although this too is dependent on a variety of factors. In this critical review phylogenetic tribal boundaries were used as a limit to hybridization...

Diversite de populations microbiennes thermophiles d'une cheminée hydrothermale océanique profonde : cultures d'enrichissement en bioréacteur et isolement d'espèces nouvelles ArchiMer
Postec, Anne.
To explore the microbial diversity at deep sea vents, molecular techniques based on the analysis of the gene coding the 16S ribosomal RNA permitted to highlight a large archaeal and bacterial diversity. Nevertheless, the diversity of the hydrothermal microorganisms cultivated to date remains much lower than the diversity described with molecular tools. Innovative methods should therefore be used in order to cultivate new microorganisms, and also determine their metabolic properties and their potential role in the ecosystem. That was the purpose of this study: a bioreactor gas-lift was used to perform enrichment cultures in continuous, during 50 days, in thermophilic (60°C) and hyperthermophilic (90°C) conditions. A hydrothermal chimney sample (Rainbow...
