Ofusori,D. A; Caxton-Martins,E. A; Komolafe,O. O; Oluyemi,K. A; Adeeyo,O. A; Ajayi,S. A; Oluwayinka,P. O; Adelakun,E. A; Keji,S. T; Adesanya,O. A.
The histological and morphometric differences in some parts of the gastrointestinal tracts of rat, bat and pangolin have been well established. This investigation aims at comparatively elucidating any adaptational changes the ileum of the three mammals must have adopted to meet its dietary requirements and also cope with their morphological differences. The investigation was carried out using ten rats, ten bats and ten pangolins of both sexes. The animals were slightly anaesthetized under chloroform inhalation. The intestines were harvested and the ileum excised and fixed in 10% formol saline. The tissues were processed for light microscopic study. The following stains were employed: Haematoxylin and eosin (H & E), Van Gieson and Verhoeff's...

Amino acid digestibility and poultry feed formulation: expression, limitations and application R. Bras. Zootec.
Bryden,Wayne L.; Li,Xiuhua.
The nutritional value or quality of dietary proteins used for poultry feed formulation varies: amino acid availability is an important measure of protein quality. Determination of ileal digestibility values has become the preferred method for estimating amino acid availability. This review discusses the different approaches to the expression of digestibility results, including correction for endogenous loss and the derivatisation of standardised values. Sources of variation in values include, the assay protocol, anti-nutritional factors in feedstuffs and feed milling. Feed formulating with ileal digestibility values should allow higher dietary inclusion levels of protein feedstuffs of lower quality provided that values of different feedstuffs are additive,...

DENSITY AND MORPHOMETRY OF MYENTERIC NEURONS OF THE ILEUM OF RATS SUBJECTED TO CHRONIC ALCOHOLISM International Journal of Morphology
dos Santos Pereira,Marli Aparecida; Molinari,Sonia Lucy; de Sousa,Fernando Carlos; André,Oriana Elaine; de Miranda Neto,Marcílio Hubner.
This work verified the changes caused by ethanol ingestion on the myenteric neurons of the ileum of rats subjected to chronic alcoholism. Twenty rats (Rattus norvegicus) were divided in control (GC) and alcoholic (GA) groups during 210 days. The animals from group GA received sugar-cane brandy diluted to 30 GL and those from group GC received water. Both groups were fed with rodent chow ad libitum. The ileum was prepared as whole-mounts for neuronal staining according to Barbosa (1978) and Gabella (1979). The neurons were counted and the cell bodies were measured. The statistical analysis revealed a significant decrease in the number of large neurons in GA compared with GC, while there was a significant increase in the number of small neurons in GA. There...

Differential effects in CGRPergic, nitrergic, and VIPergic myenteric innervation in diabetic rats supplemented with 2% L-glutamine Anais da ABC (AABC)
PEREIRA,RENATA V.F.; LINDEN,DAVID R.; MIRANDA-NETO,MARCÍLIO H.; ZANONI,JACQUELINE N..
ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of 2% L-glutamine supplementation on myenteric innervation in the ileum of diabetic rats, grouped as follows: normoglycemic (N); normoglycemic supplemented with L-glutamine (NG); diabetic (D); and diabetic supplemented with L-glutamine (DG). The ileums were subjected to immunohistochemical techniques to localize neurons immunoreactive to HuC/D protein (HuC/D-IR) and neuronal nitric oxide synthase enzyme (nNOS-IR) and to analyze varicosities immunoreactive to vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP-IR) and calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP-IR). L-Glutamine in the DG group (i) prevented the increase in the cell body area of nNOS-IR neurons, (ii) prevented the increase in the area of...

Distribution of Serotonin-immunoreactive Enterochromaffin Cells in the Gastrointestinal Tract of the Least Shrew (Cryptotis parva) International Journal of Morphology
Al-Tikriti,Mohammed S; Khamas,Wael; Chebolu,Seetha; Darmani,Nissar A.
Serotonin is an important neurotransmitter in the central (CNS) and peripheral (PNS) nervous systems. It is involved in a variety of physiological processes both in the gut and in the CNS. The present study examined the distribution of serotonin containing enterochromaffin cells in the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) of a vomit competent species, the least shrew. These cells were easily recognized by their globular granules stained with the H&E and serotonin immune-positive stain. The immunoreactive enterochromaffin cells (IERCs) were mainly confined to the basal portion of the glandular epithelium and were distributed throughout the shrew stomach, small and large intestine. None was found to be associated with the mucosal epithelial lining. Moreover,...

Effect of age on the myosin-V immunoreactive myenteric neurons of rats ileum Biocell
Ferreira Schoffen,João Paulo; Marçal Natali,Maria Raquel.
Alterations in the gastrointestinal neuromuscular function related to age have been demonstrated in human and animal models. This study analyzes the effects of the aging process on the area of the neuronal cell bodies of the myenteric plexus in the antimesenteric and intermediate regions of the ileal circumference of Wistar, 12 month-old in comparison 3 month-old animals. The ileum was removed and whole-mount preparations immunostained by the antibody anti-myosin-V were processed. The morphometric analyses were performed using a computerized image analysis system, with a subsequent distribution of neurons by size in intervals of 100 μm². The cellular body morphometry revealed a significant increase in the size of the myosin-V- immunoreactive...

The objective of this research study was to evaluate the effect of age on the apparent ileal digestibility coefficient of nutrients, gross energy and digestible energy of corn germ meal for broilers. Four digestibility trials were conducted using 280 broilers (Cobb 500) distributed in a completely randomized design with two treatments and five replications, repeated at four ages (10, 20, 30 and 40 days). The number of birds used in the tests was 10, 8, 6 and 4 birds per experimental unit at the different ages. The results were analyzed considering as dependent variable the apparent ileal digestibility of dry matter, crude protein, ether extract and gross energy, digestible dry matter, digestible crude protein, lipid and digestible energy; and ages (10, 20,...

Effects of piperitenone oxide on the intestinal smooth muscle of the guinea pig BJMBR
We investigated the effects of piperitenone oxide (PO), a major constituent of the essential oil of Mentha x villosa, on the guinea pig ileum. PO (30 to 740 µg/ml) relaxed basal tonus without significantly altering the resting membrane potential. In addition, PO relaxed preparations precontracted with either 60 mM K+ or 5 mM tetraethylammonium in a concentration-dependent manner. At concentrations from 0.1 to 10 µg/ml PO potentiated acetylcholine-induced contractions, while higher concentrations (>30 µg/ml) blocked this response. These higher PO concentrations also inhibited contractions induced by 60 mM K+. PO also blocked the components of acetylcholine contraction which are not sensitive to nifedipine or to solutions with nominal zero Ca2+ and...

Experimental approaches to study the nutritional value of food ingredients for dogs and cats R. Bras. Zootec.
Harmon,David L..
This review covers methods that have been applied to study the nutrient value or quality of specific ingredients fed to dogs, cats and comparable species (i.e. foxes, minks, rats, etc.). Typically, the nutritional value or utilization of a specific ingredient is measured by total tract digestibility and has been expanded through the measurement of total nutrient balance (i.e. nitrogen or energy). However, to better understand digestion it is necessary to obtain a more accurate measurement of nutrients entering and leaving the small intestine. Accurate measurement of small intestinal digestion is crucial in dogs and cats because nutrient digestion and absorption occurs primarily in the small intestine. Measuring small intestinal digestibility requires...
