BIOPROSPECTING: A TOOL TO CONSERVE CHILEAN BRYOPHYTES Gayana Botánica
Cuvertino-Santoni,Jorge; Montenegro,Gloria.
Here, we present the current state of knowledge on the diversity of Chilean bryophytes (mosses, liverworts, and hornworts), the secondary metabolites present in these plants, and the biological activity of extracts from populations of Chilean species. Our goal is to establish the potential of these plants as a source of useful molecules for pharmaceutical and agricultural industries, thus promoting their conservation. Only 3,7% of Chilean bryophytes (55 spp.) have been analyzed using chemical characterization of their extracts (methanol, ether, ethanol, dichloromethane, acetone and hexane). Only four species from Chilean and Argentinian populations (Porella chilensis (Lehm. & Lindenb.) Trevi., Riccardiapolyclada (Mitt. ex Thurn) Hässel,...

Effects of somatic embryogenesis on gene expression of cloned coffee heterozygous hybrids. Repositório Alice
OLIVEIRA, K. C. de; GUIMARÃES, P. de S.; BAZIOLI, J. M.; MARTINATI, J. C.; SANTOS, M. M. dos; PADILHA, L.; GUERREIRO-FILHO, O.; MALUF, M. P..
Cloning of superior coffee plants by somatic embryogenesis can assist breeding programs on reducing the cost and time for launch of new cultivars. This study aimed to evaluate the efficiency of this methodology for cloning coffee trees with high heterozygosity, and to gather evidence that clonal progenies are faithful copies of mother plants. Selected plants IAC1 and IAC 2 from Coffea arabica breeding populations, resistant to leaf rust and leaf miner, respectively, were cloned via indirect somatic embryogenesis. Expression of selected genes involved in biological processes potentially affected by in vitro cultivation was evaluated by quantitative analysis. Genes encoding proteins associated with maintenance of DNA integrity and control of cell cycle...

Etude d'une prolifération hémocytaire chez la moule Mytilus edulis ArchiMer
Noel, Danièle.
Hemic proliferative disease in the bay mussel, Mytilus edulis, has been studied following mortalities in Washington State (USA). The disease has been reproduced in the labortory. The establishment of this experimental model led to study tumoral characteristics of the atypic hemocytes : ultrastrure, in vitro cultivation, transplantation. The infectious etiology of this tumor has been verified. It has been hypothesized to result from a viral infection since retrovirus-like particules have been observed following induction by bromodeoxyuridine. Specific monoclonal antibodies against atypic hemocytes have been obtained and characcterized

In Vitro Cultivation of Blood Stream Trypomastigotes of Trypanosoma vivax without Feeder Cell Layers OAK
Hirumi, Hiroyuki; Hirumi, K.; Moloo, S. K.; Shaw, M. K..
Bloodstream trypomastigotes (BSFs) of 2 clones (IL 1392 and IL 3671) of Trypanosoma vivax were cultured without feeder layers in 3 systems. System I: metacyclic-producing cultures of T. vivax IL 1392 were initiated with BSFs derived from infected mice at 27 OC in the presence of feeder layers using TVM-1 medium. Metacyclics harvested were then transferred to flasks containing feeder cells and maintained at 34 OC using TVM-22 medium. Under such conditions, the metacyclics transformed to BSFs. Bloodstream trypomastigotes which were then transferred to new flasks, continued to grow in HMI-162 medium without feeder cells. The maximum density of the BSFs and their shortest population doubling time were 3.5 x l06 / ml and 13.5 h, respectively. System II:...

Organogenesis and plant regeneration of Arachis villosa Benth. (Leguminosae) through leaf culture Biocell
Fontana,María Laura; Mroginski,Luis Amado; Rey,Hebe Yolanda.
With the aim of developing an efficient plant regeneration protocol, leaflet explants of three accessions of Arachis villosa Benth. (S2866, S2867 and L97) were cultured on basic Murashige and Skoog medium supplemented with different combinations of plant growth regulators: α-naphthalenacetic acid, indole-3-butyric acid, 6-benzylaminopurine, kinetin and thidiazuron. The accession L97 was the only one able to differentiate buds through indirect organogenesis. The most suitable combination for bud regeneration was the basic medium added with 13.62 μM thidiazuron and 4.44 μM 6-benzylaminopurine. These results show the important role of the genotype in morphogenetic responses and the organogenetic effect of thidiazuron in Arachis...
