Insect galls of the xeric vegetation of Ilha do Cabo Frio (Arraial do Cabo, RJ, Brazil) Biota Neotropica
Maia,Valéria Cid; Souza,Marcelo da Costa.
The xeric vegetation of Ilha do Cabo Frio (Arraial do Cabo, RJ) was investigated for insect galls, in May, June and August of 2012, totalizing 24 hours of field work. Forty-five morphotypes of insect galls were found on 29 species of host plant (25 genera and 18 families). Asteraceae and Myrtaceae were the most galled plant families. Leaves were the most galled plant organ, with ca. 62% of the total, followed by stems (ca. 22%). Globoid and fusiform galls were the most frequent with about 29% and 24%, respectively. The majority was glabrous (ca. 91%), and one-chambered (ca. 84%). Gallers of 30 morphotypes were determined. They belong to Diptera (Cecidomyiidae), and Lepidoptera. The former was the most frequent. Larvae of Muscomorpha (Diptera) (probably...

Intraspecific variation in the shell ornamentation of benthic Ostracoda (Crustacea) from Kiribati, Pacific Ocean ArchiMer
Eagar, Sh.
Twenty four species of ostracod have been found on Tarawa Atoll and fifteen on Kuria Island, Republic of Kiri-bati in the western Pacific Ocean. Thirteen species are common to both atolls. A consistent difference has been discovered in the ostracod faunas of Tarawa and Kuria, with those from Kuria showing coarser texture in the ornamentation than their counterparts from Tarawa. The variation of carapace ornamentation has led to multiple names for a species. A characteristic ornamentation at a particular locality may be a due to a small number of specimens colonising the new locality and having a limited gene pool. Alternatively, any variation in the ornamentation may be a clue to multiple phases of colonisation within a small area.

Island slopes and jumbled shell beds Naturalis

Shell beds pose questions of provenance, but determining degree of transport of bioclasts before deposition can be speculative.

Snake assemblage of Ilha de São Sebastião, southeastern Brazil: comparison to mainland Biota Neotropica
Centeno,Fernanda da Cruz; Sawaya,Ricardo Jannini; Marques,Otavio Augusto Vuolo.
We provide a checklist of snake species from Ilha de São Sebastião (Ilhabela), the largest coastal island in Brazil located on the northern coast of São Paulo state. We also compare snake diversity (including richness and relative abundance of species) of Ilhabela and the nearest mainland municipality, São Sebastião. We obtained the data from the herpetological collections of the Instituto Butantan and Museu de Zoologia of Universidade de São Paulo, including records from 1939 to 2005. We recorded twenty snake species from Ilhabela (N = 376 individuals), and the dominant species was the viperid Bothrops jararaca with 55% of dominance. In São Sebastião we recorded 27 species (N = 625), and Bothrops jararaca was also the dominant species, but with 25% of...

Terrestrial and coastal landscape evolution on tropical oceanic islands Naturalis
Viles, H.A.; Spencer, T..
Tropical oceanic islands owe their origin to volcanic eruptions, their location to plate tectonics, and their morphology to the interplay over time between a range of constructional and erosional processes. A broad distinction can be made between high volcanic islands, with summits up to 4,000 m, and low carbonate islands only a few metres above sea level.

Variation in cytochrome-b haplotypes suggests a new species of Zygodontomys (Rodentia: Cricetidae) endemic to Isla Coiba, Panama Rev. Bras. Zool.
González,Publio; Sawyer,Yadéeh E.; Avila,Mario; Armién,Aníbal G.; Armién,Blas; Cook,Joseph A..
The identity of two insular populations of rodents of the nominal species, Zygodontomys brevicauda (Allen & Chapman, 1893), from the Veragua Archipelago was examined. The mitochondrial cytochrome-b gene was sequenced from specimens collected on Isla Coiba (n = 10), Isla Cébaco (n = 3) and on the nearby Peninsula Azuero (n = 3) in Panama and compared with sequences of Z. brevicauda and a number of other related species from GenBank. For Panama, phylogenetic analyses identified two clades within Zygodontomys Allen, 1897; one representing Isla Coiba and another clade composed of rats from Isla Cébaco and from the mainland on the Peninsula Azuero, as well as a GenBank sequence of Z. brevicauda from Venezuela. We suggest that the population from Isla...

Variation of the tidal properties around Gran Canaria ArchiMer
Martinez, A; Perez, E; Bruno, M.
Analysis of water level and current meter series from different locations on the island shelf of Gran Canaria reveals strong variations in tidal properties. Semidiurnal sea level amplitudes agree with the results obtained from global tidal models for this region only on the northern coast of the island, while they decrease towards the southwest (10 cm difference for the M-2 constituent). Semidiurnal currents present maxima at the southeastern and northwestern extremities of the island (30-40 cm s(-1) for M-2) and minima in the north-northeast and southwest (3-6 cm s(-1) for M-2), showing simultaneous strong changes in the phase. Diurnal levels and currents display smaller variations than the semidiurnal band. The behaviour of semidiurnal constituents is...
