Bioactive properties and chemical composition of six walnut (Juglans regia L.) cultivars IPB - Escola Superior Agrária

The chemical composition, antioxidant potential and antimicrobial activity were studied in six walnuts (Juglans regia L.) cultivars (cv. Franquette, Lara, Marbot, Mayette, Mellanaise and Parisienne) produced in Portugal. Concerning their chemical composition the main constituent of fruits was fat ranging from 78.83% to 82.14%, being the nutritional value around 720 kcal per 100 g of fruits. Linoleic acid was the major fatty acid reaching the maximum value of 60.30% (cv. Lara) followed by oleic, linolenic and palmitic acids. Determination of sterol and fatty acid compositions, oxidative stability and nutritional value of six walnut (Juglans regia L.) cultivars grown in Portugal IPB - Escola Superior Agrária

Six cultivars (Franquette, Marbot, Mayette, Mellanaise, Lara, and Parisienne) of walnuts (Juglans regia L.) were collected during the 2001 crop, from Bragança, Portugal. Chemical composition, including moisture, total oil content, crude protein, ash, carbohydrates, and nutritional value, was evaluated. Fat was the predominant component, ranging from 62.3 to 66.5%. Total oil was extracted and analyzed for fatty acids, sterols, oxidative stability, and peroxide value. Fatty acids and sterols were determined by gas-liquid chromatography coupled to a flame ionization detector. Eighteen fatty acids were quantified. Several studies suggest that regular consumption of nuts, mostly walnuts, may have beneficial effects against oxidative stress mediated diseases such as cardiovascular disease and cancer. Walnuts contain several phenolic compounds which are thought to contribute to their biological properties. The present study reports the total phenolic contents and antioxidant properties of methanolic and petroleum ether extracts obtained from walnut (Juglans regia L.) seed, green husk and leaf. Phenolic profile in the quality control of walnut (Juglans regia L.)leaves IPB - Escola Superior Agrária

Qualitative and quantitative determinations of phenolic compounds were carried out on walnut leaves samples from six different cultivars, with the same agricultural, geographical and climatic conditions. The evolution of major phenolic compounds amounts was monitored from May to September. Two extractive procedures were assayed and best results were obtained using acidified water and a solid phase extraction column purification step. Qualitative analysis was performed by HPLC-DAD/MS and, in all samples, seven phenolic compounds were identified (3-caffeoylquinic, 3-p-coumaroylquinic and 4-p-coumaroylquinic acids, quercetin 3-galactoside, quercetin 3-arabinoside, quercetin 3-xyloside, quercetin 3-rhamnoside) and two other partially identified phenolics...

Triacylglycerols composition of walnut (Juglans regia L.) cultivars: characterization by HPLC/ELSD and chemometrics IPB - Escola Superior Agrária

A total of 26 walnut ( Juglans regia L.) samples from 9 cultivars (Arco, Franquette, Hartley, Lara, Marbot, Mayette, Mellanaise, Parisienne, and Rego) harvested in the 2001, 2002, and 2003 crop years and grown in two geographical origins (Bragancüa and Coimbra, Portugal) were evaluated with regard to their triacylglycerol composition. The methodology employed was reversed-phase highperformance liquid chromatography coupled to an evaporative light-scattering detector (RP-HPLCELSD) after extraction of the lipidic fraction of the nuts.
