A holistic framework for the analysis of landscape changes following organic farming Organic Eprints
Levin, Gregor.
In this paper I reflect on the design of an appropriate methodological framework for my Ph.D.-project. Holism is widely recognised a vital concept for research on human-environment relationships. This is especially the case when agriculture’s impact on land-scapes is studied. Thus, for my study on landscape changes following conversion to or-ganic farming, I discuss holism in terms of its relevance in principal and in terms of its actual practicability. I recognise that a holistic angle is decisive in order to analyse and understand the spatial and temporal dynamics of the landscape and the multitude forces and processes that have a bearing on them. Keeping a general holistic concept in mind can elucidate factors and processes that might be overlooked in a...

A methodological framework for analysing landscape dynamics in relation to organic farming Organic Eprints
Levin, Gregor.
Since the mid-1980’ies Danish agriculture has been subject to a growing conversion into organic farming. Today roughly 6% of the cultivated land is farmed organically. Consequently, organic farming has a growing impact on the Danish agricultural landscape. It is generally expected that conversion to organic farming leads to landscapes with a rich and diverse nature. However, for organic farming in Denmark there exist no specific rules or guidelines concerning conservation and/or improvement of nature values at landscape scale. A positive effect of organic farming techniques on nature content within cultivated fields is relatively well documented. Yet, information about the relation between organic farming and nature values outside or surrounding...

A simple biodiversity assessment scheme supporting nature-friendly farm management Organic Eprints
Tasser, Erich; Rüdisser, Johannes; Plaikner, Michaela; Wezel, Alexander; Stöckli, Sibylle; Vincent, Audrey; Nitsch, Heike; Dubbert, Monika; Moos, Valerie; Walde, Janette; Bogner, Daniel.
Farmers are important actors for regional development and biodiversity protection. Agri-environment-climate measures (AECM) are therefore a central tool of the European Union to support its biodiversity conservation policy. AECM generally reward farmers for fulfilling predefined management actions or avoiding specific practices. In contrast, result oriented AECM are intended to reward farmers for the outcome of nature friendly management practices. This approach gives more flexibility in management and hence promotes farmers engagement and autonomy. Besides educational activities and agricultural advisory services farmers need user friendly tools to assess biodiversity in order to meet result oriented AECM. Thus, we present a biodiversity assessment scheme...

Ackerwildkraut-Blühstreifen zur Integration autochthoner Ackerwildkräuter in ökologisch bewirtschafteten Ackerflächen Organic Eprints
Hotze, Carola; van Elsen, Dr. Thomas; Haase, Dr. Thorsten; Hess, Prof. Dr. Jürgen; Otto, Marius.
Are flower-strips composed of arable field plants a tool to integrate rare species into organic fields? In the surrounding of the Hessian State Domain Frankenhausen seeds of rare annual field plants were collected and reproduced. The autochthonous seeds and also the corn-cockle have been integrated into a mixture that has been tested to which extent the flower-strips are able to suppress soil-borne weed species. The vegetation of the arable field plant strips has been monitored by phytosociological relevees. A certain amount of seeds is needed to reach satisfactory results. The corncockle affords special management because of its biology and its possible toxicity.

Agri-Environment Programme for Croatia Organic Eprints
Znaor, Darko; Karoglan Todorović, Sonja.
In the period 2002-2004, the Netherlands Government's Pin-Matra programme funded an international project aiming to support the introduction of an agri-environment programme (AE) in Croatia. The project resulted in proposals for national and pilot agri-environment programmes. The project addressed key actors working on agri-environmental issues in Croatia, such as government representatives, scientists, farmers, environmental and nature conservation NGOs. An AE Programme has been operating in the EU since 1992. Today it is the only obligatory measure under the EU Rural Development Regulation. The costs of the AE programmes are part-financed from the EU budget and partly from national budgets. The programme is based on voluntary agreements between...

In the period 2002-2004, the Netherlands Government's Pin-Matra programme funded an international project aiming to support the introduction of an agri-environment (AE) programme in Croatia. The project resulted in proposals for national and pilot agri-environment programmes. This publication summarises the proposal for the Pilot project. The Agri-Environment Programme is an integral part of the EU Rural Development Regulation (1257/1999). It is the only obligatory measure under this regulation. The programme sets up the framework for the comprehensive protection of the environment and nature from adverse agricultural practices. The programme is based on voluntary agreements between farmers and public authorities. By providing economic incentives and...

Agri-Environmental Instruments for an Integrated Rural Policy: An Economic Analysis AgEcon
Feinerman, Eli; Komen, Marinus H.C..
The new Rural Development Regulation of the EU reflects the shift of attention within rural areas from agricultural production towards rural development and embraces both, farmers and non-farm residents. While agricultural production is required to comply with environmental standards, rural areas also have to fulfil the growing demand for landscape, outdoor recreation and wildlife conservation. This paper develops a model of a rural area where farmers and non-farm residents live together. A central government uses a combination of two-policy instruments--direct compensation payments and public services -- aimed at encouraging farmers to adopt environmentally beneficial practices and at the same time to increase the provision of country-side amenities and...

Agroforestry Survey: A Summary of Response Organic Eprints
Lewis, Sophie.
This paper discusses the results of a survey conducted by the Organic Research Centre’s Agroecology Programme to gain an understanding of how landowners in the UK are currently using the woody components on their land, in order to assess whether there is potential from landowners to gain more both economically and ecologically from the woody components. This survey was intended to reach a wide audience of landowners that practiced both organic and non-organic farming. Organisations that helped to distribute this survey are listed in Appendix 1. The survey was a voluntary online survey, therefore the assumption is that landowners that took part would have had an interest in this topic and therefore may not be representative of all UK landowners. From...

Agromere: Stadslandbouw in Almere, van toekomstbeelden naar ontwerp Organic Eprints
Jansma, J.E.; Dekking, A.J.G.; Migchels, G.; de Buck, A.J.; Ruijs, M.N.A.; Galema, P.J.; Visser, A.J..

An integrated analysis of scale effects in alternative agricultural systems Organic Eprints
Firth, Chris; Philipps, Lois; Stagl, Sigrid; Benton, Tim; Brown, Katrina; Burton, Rob; Carver, Steve; Davies, Ben; Gibbon, David; Godwin, Bob; Kunin, Bill; Rigby, Dan; Salt, Steve.
The impacts associated with alternative methods of agricultural production, and the factors that drive their adoption, are critically dependent on the scale at which they are applied. Using organic farming as a case study, this project operating from 2006-2009 in the UK, will undertake an integrated assessment of scale effects by studying matched sets of farms situated in landscapes with high and low concentrations of organic farming.

Ansätze zur Landschaftsentwicklung durch Landwirtschaft – das Beispiel Marbachstal/ Kassel Organic Eprints
van Elsen, Thomas.
As a diverse landscape is no longer automatically produced by agriculture, the development of landscape may become a new challenge for organic farms, and for the integration of agriculture and nature development, too. The perception of the landscape can be the basis to create a process of landscape development instead of carrying out a single landscape plan. The example of a newly founded organic landscape and gardening farm in the Marbach Valley (Kassel) describes the first steps how to develop a dialogue between people from outside the farm (people engaged in nature conservation, local authorities), the farmer and the landscape. Two seminars were carried out as a first encounter – a social process in order to appreciate values of landscape and nature,...

Assessing the public goods provided by organic agriculture: lessons learned from practice Organic Eprints
Smith, Laurence; Padel, Susanne; Pearce, Bruce; Lampkin, Nic; Gerrard, Catherine L; Woodward, Lawrence; Fowler, Sue; Measures, Mark.
The role of farms as providers of public goods has long been recognised, and measuring performance in this area is of increasing interest to policy makers, in light of the approaching Common Agricultural Policy reform. The Organic Research Centre has been working on this topic in recent years, through the development of sustainability assessment tools. The latest outcome from this process is a ‘Public Goods’ assessment tool, developed through a Natural England funded project which aimed to evaluate the benefits accruing from organic management and entering into an Organic Entry Level Stewardship (OELS) agreement. This paper describes the development of the Public Goods (PG) tool, and what has been learned in the process.

Assessing the recreational demand for agricultural land in Finland Organic Eprints
Pouta, Eija; Ovaskainen, Ville.
It is widely assumed that the scenic attractiveness and other public good aspects of agricultural land can be utilized as a source of livelihood in rural areas in the form of recreation and tourism. In this study we use two approaches to consider whether agricultural landscapes are preferred as a destination for recreation (day trips) and rural tourism (overnight trips). We first analyse the choice of recreation site type based on a model that aggregates sites using the presence of agricultural land as an aggregation variable. Population survey data on recreation trips reveal an association between the respondent’s living environment, recreational activities and visit characteristics and the probability of choosing a destination with agricultural land....

Wolfart, Andreas; Fuchs, Nikolai.
The present, for all parties unsatisfying governmental grant system of agricultural nature protection should be adapted in the future individual farm approaches. Methods referring to this are already developed. Instead of invariable directions given all over the country, the applicants formulate actions exactly adjusted for the special locality and the individual farm. An accredited expert attests the conformity of the plan with the laws of nature protection. Consultation is a further topic for governmental granting. All granted actions are to be made transparent to the public. This enhances private-official networks as required by the European Agricultural Convention.
