A incubação de ovos e larvas em Genidens genidens (Valenciennes) (Siluriformes, Ariidae) da Baía de Guaratuba, Paraná, Brasil Zoologia

At Guaraluba bay, the catfish Genidens genidens shows incubating behavior during the summer months. The larvae are either less or heavier than the eggs, and their stomach analysis confirms the exogenous leeding during incubation. Embryos sizes can increase to 59mm in total lenght and 2,8g in total weight, including the yolksac. It was observed that the largest larvae are guarded by the largest adults, and that the embryo size is similar among individuals from the same adult.

A new host for Philornis torquans (Diptera, Muscidae) from the Brazilian Cerrado Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)

Abstract Philornis larvae and pupae were collected in nestlings of Neothraupis fasciata (Lichtenstein), the White-banded Tanager (Passeriformes, Thraupidae), in three breeding seasons, between October and November 2003-2005 in a reserve in central Brazil. Here, we present biological data, diagnosis to the recognition of the species and a key to the segregation of species occurring in the Cerrado. The larvae were intradermic in the nestlings and the pupae were collected in the nests after the birds have abandoned them. The immatures collected were taken to the laboratory and reared under laboratory conditions, until emergence. A new Synbranchus (Teleostei: Synbranchiformes: Synbranchidae) from ilha de Marajó, Pará, Brazil, with notes on its reproductive biology and larval development Neotropical Ichthyology

Synbranchus lampreia, new species, is described from rio Goiapi, Marajó Island, Pará, northern Brazil. It differs from the other two described species of the genus by its color pattern, which consists of large roundish black blotches scattered over a light brown or yellowish ground pigmentation and presence of inconspicuous brown small spots distributed among the large dark spots. The species is further distinguished from S. marmoratus by a higher number of vertebrae and from S. madeira by a shorter postanal length. Information about reproductive aspects is provided and larval stages are described and illustrated.

With phylogenetic knowledge of Lepidoptera rapidly increasing, catalysed by increasingly powerful molecular techniques, the demand for fossil calibration points to estimate an evolutionary timeframe for the order is becoming an increasingly pressing issue. The family Nepticulidae is a species rich, basal branch within the phylogeny of the Lepidoptera, characterized by larval leaf-mining habits, and thereby represents a potentially important lineage whose evolutionary history can be established more thoroughly with the potential use of fossil calibration points. Absence de captage de Crassostrea gigas dans le bassin de Marennes-Oléron en 1981 : causes et conséquences ArchiMer

The want of C. gigas spat-catching in the Marennes-oleron basin in 1981 can be due to various different reasons which are analysed here. Physico -chemical and trophic factors that can induce variations in the quality of gametogenesis, are successively in comparison with the year 1979 when reproduction was good. The biochemical evolution and a study of gonads slow a lack in maturation in 1981 even during the summer period. Late maturation of gonads bring about physiological consequences which induced mortality of cultivated oysters at the end of winter. A feeble recruit and a decrease of the cultivated stock have economic consequences which here sketched up.

Acquisition of epibiotic bacteria along the life cycle of the hydrothermal shrimp Rimicaris exoculata ArchiMer

The caridean shrimp Rimicaris exoculata dominates the fauna at several Mid-Atlantic Ridge hydrothermal vent sites. This shrimp has an enlarged gill chamber, harboring a dense ectosymbiotic community of chemoautotrophic bacteria associated with mineral oxide deposits. Until now, their acquisition is not fully understood. At three hydrothermal vent sites, we analyzed the epibionts diversity at different moult stages and also in the first stages of the shrimp life (eggs, hatched eggs (with larvae) and juveniles). The Tributyl tin acetate, a component of certain antifouling paints, has deleterious effects on eggs and D shaped larvae from Crassostrea gigas at 5 p.p.b. (HIS & ROBERT, 1980). Here we have tested concentrations as low as 1 p.p.b. on eggs and on 24 hours old larvae both from Crassostrea gigas and Mytilus galloprovincialis. The same results are got ; this product kills embryos and larvae in a few days ; it prevents growth of 24 hours old larvae exposed to this toxic. Mussels larvae seem to be less sensitive.

Adaptation of digestive enzymes to dietary protein, carbohydrate and fibre levels and influence of protein and carbohydrate quality in Penaeus vannamei larvae (Crustacea, Decapoda) ArchiMer

Activity of digestive enzymes (trypsin, chymotrypsin and amylase) was studied in relation with food in Penaeus vannamei larvae first stages. Microparticles containing casein involved the decrease of soluble protein content and enzyme activities. Specific trypsin activity but not chymotrypsin was correlated (p<1%) to casein level between 10 and 60% in microparticles. Cellulose fibres in food seemed to have little effect on digestive enzymes. Starch, between 1 and 20% in microparticles, had no influence on specific amylase activity. The effect of different feeding conditions were also tested on growth. This study examined ammonia excretion at different life stages (eggs, larvae and juveniles) in silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen) and determined the influence of fasting time on ammonia excretion. Eggs and larvae were collected from incubators at different times after fecundation and placed in chambers. Juveniles were separated into two weight classes (2–50 g and 150-320 g) and placed in individual chambers after feeding. Water was collected from each chamber to determine ammonia excretion. Ammonia excretion by the eggs was low, but when hatching began approximately 28h after fecundation, excretion increased until 48h after fecundation. Application of a micro-respirometric volumetric method to respiratory measurements of larvae of the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas ArchiMer

The application of a simple, fast and reliable volumetric microrespirometric method to assess respiration of bivalve larvae is discussed. As a model, C. gigas larvae of various sizes were used. Metabolic activity of veliger larvae was assessed by measuring respiratory rate for use in ecophysiological modelling. As mudanças climáticas podem afetar a distribuição e a intensidade de infestação de pragas por meio de efeitos diretos sobre sua biologia. Sendo assim, para avaliar os efeitos de diferentes temperaturas (25ºC, 28ºC, 31ºC, 34ºC e 37ºC), sobre aspectos biológicos de Anticarsia gemmatalis Hübner, estudos foram conduzidos em laboratório em condições controladas por três gerações consecutivas desse lepidóptero. Os insetos foram criados em câmaras climatizadas e alimentados com dieta artificial. A duração do ciclo total de desenvolvimento da praga decresceu com o aumento da temperatura na faixa de 25°C a 34°C. Resumo: 0 trabalho foi executado com o objetivo de determinar e comparar a atividade "in vitro" dos benzimidazóis: oxfendazole, fenbendazole, aIbendazole e thiabendazole em nematódeos gastrintestinais, de caprinos. Para isto, realizaram-se coproculturas que foram tratadas corn anti-helmínticos benzimidazóis, em cinco concentrações diferentes: 6,25; 12,5; 25,0; 50,0 e 100,0 ppm, para cada um dos produtos, corn cinco coproculturas por concentração. Avaliação de Trichogramma spp. para o controle de Trichoplusia ni. Repositório Alice

Resumo O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar as características biológicas dos parasitoides Trichogramma acacioi, T. atopovirilia, T. marandobai, T. demoraesi, T. exiguum (duas linhagens) e T. pretiosum (seis linhagens), criados em ovos de Trichoplusia ni. O experimento foi conduzido em delineamento inteiramente casualizado, com 15 repetições. As características biológicas avaliadas foram: parasitismo, viabilidade, razão sexual e número de indivíduos por ovo. A percentagem de parasitismo variou entre 7,66 e 53%, com maior valor observado para a linhagem Tspd de Trichogramma pretiosum, e o menor para a linhagem Trecife de T. pretiosum. Não houve diferença significativa dessa espécie quanto à viabilidade, que ficou acima de 85%. A razão sexual variou de 0,75...

Bacterial problems associated with scallop Pecten maximus larval culture ArchiMer

Scallop Pecten maximus larvae have been cultured at the Argenton and Tinduff (Brittany, France) hatcheries with antibiotic treatment (chloramphenicol at 8 ppm) for 15 yr. Without treatment, outbreak of disease has normally occurred between Day 12 and Day 19 or sometimes earlier. A bacteriological study of larvae reared with and without antibiotic was performed over a 4 yr period. Among the collected strains, 2 clusters (C and F) of vibrios were present at high densities only in larvae cultured without treatment. En el presente estudio se realiza un bioensayo para determinar el grado de concentración media letal del dispersante de petróleo BP 1100-WD, utilizando organismos vivos en condiciones de laboratorio. Se describe el método estadístico de Bliss. En definitiva el propósito de realizar bioensayos es la de comparar la toxicidad de diferentes compuestos y conocer la sensibilidad de las diversas especies, para determinar los mecanismos de los efectos de las sustancias ensayadas (Alcazar, 1988).

Nyssomyia whitmani (Antunes and Coutinho, 1939) has been considered as a complex of cryptic species, and some of the populations of this complex plays an important role in the transmission of Leishmania spp. in Brazil. The present study reports the biological aspects concerning the productivity out of eggs and the development time of the descendants of females obtained in Dourados municipality, Mato Grosso do Sul state. The females were captured with modified electric aspirators, fed in hamsters and further individualized in containers for breeding. At the insectary, temperature and relative humidity were maintained on average of 24.5 °C and 67.3%, respectively.
