A hierarchical Bayesian model for embedding larval drift and habitat models in integrated life cycles for exploited fish ArchiMer
Rochette, Sebastien; Le Pape, Olivier; Vigneau, Joel; Rivot, Etienne.
This paper proposes a hierarchical Bayesian framework for modeling the life cycle of marine exploited fish with a spatial perspective. The application was developed for a nursery-dependent fish species, the common sole (Solea solea), on the Eastern Channel population (Western Europe). The approach combined processes of different natures and various sources of observations within an integrated framework for life-cycle modeling: (1) outputs of an individual-based model for larval drift and survival that provided yearly estimates of the dispersion and mortality of eggs and larvae, from spawning grounds to settlement in several coastal nurseries; (2) a habitat suitability model, based on juvenile trawl surveys coupled with a geographic information system, to...

Aspectos biológicos e morfológicos de Leucanella viridescens (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae: Hemileucinae) Rev. Bras. Zool.
Specht,Alexandre; Corseuil,Elio; Benedetti,Augusto J.; Poletto,Graziela; Formentini,Aline C..
The goal of this work was to describe aspects of the biology and morphology of Leucanella viridescens (Walker, 1855), a polyphytophagous species that is a pest to several crops of economical interest and whose larvae may cause erucism. Biological parameters were obtained under controlled conditions: temperature of 25 ± 1ºC, relative humidity of 70 ± 10%, and a 14 h photophase. Morphological and behavioral aspects were analyzed in each developmental phase. The larval stage had six instars, with an average growth rate of 1.396. A high degree of polyphytophagy was observed, including over 49 host plant species belonging to 25 families, especially Leguminosae, Solanaceae and Salicaceae. The considerable chromatic variability of the adults obtained from the...

Biology of nymphs of Rhodnius robustus Larrousse, 1927 (Hemiptera, Rreduviidae), fed on pigeon or on swiss mouse blood in laboratory conditions BJB
BRAGA,M. V.; PRATA,K. C.; BRAZIL,R. P..
The duration of the life cycle of Rhodnius robustus Larrousse, 1927 as well as the mortality rate of each nymphal instar were studied comparing groups fed on pigeon or on mouse blood weekly or fortnightly. This species showed a better development and lower mortality rate when fed on swiss mouse. The intervals between feedings apparently did not have influence on the shortening of the cycle. We suggest that laboratory colonies and experiments with R. robustus are better maintained when these triatomines are fed on swiss mouse.

Black scabbardfish, Aphanopus carbo, in the northeast Atlantic: distribution and hypothetical migratory cycle ArchiMer
Farias, Ines; Morales-nin, Beatriz; Lorance, Pascal; Figueiredo, Ivone.
The biology, ecology, and dynamics of the deep-sea teleost black scabbardfish in the northeast Atlantic are reviewed. The black scabbardfish is a commercial bathypelagic species found in the NE Atlantic mostly from Iceland to the Canary Islands and Western Sahara, at depths from 800 to 1300 m. The spatial structure of its population is still uncertain, although the existence of one single stock that migrates around the NE Atlantic driven by feeding and reproduction is the most likely hypothesis consistent with available data. This review is based on data from commercial fisheries off the Faroe Islands, Hatton Bank, the west of the British Isles, and Portugal (mainland, Azores, and Madeira) and from Icelandic and Scottish scientific surveys collected...

Brooding in a temperate zone land snail: seasonal and regional patterns Naturalis
Sulikowska-Drozd, A.; Maltz, T.K.; Kappes, H..
The goal of this study is to assess if the reproductive strategy of a brooding land snail shifts along a climatic gradient. We focused on the following traits: timing and length of the reproductive season, brood size, ontogenetic dynamics of embryos, and reproductive mode (viviparity versus egg-laying). We dissected the central European door snail Alinda biplicata, collected monthly from eight populations covering the oceaniccontinental climatic gradient within the species’ distribution range. Forty percent of the 1706 dissected individuals were brooding. The species displayed a spring-summer reproductive activity pattern: intrauterine brooding was recorded between March and September; first embryos of a developmental stage that equals that of live-born...

Características ecológicas del pulpito Octopus Tehuelchus en tres ambientes del golfo San Matías OceanDocs
Storero, L.P..
Coastal marine ecosystems are highly variable and the inherent biotic and abiotic factors of these environments can influence the bio-ecological characteristics of the living cephalopods. The presence of the small octopus “pulpito” Octopus tehuelchus in the coastal environments of San Matías Gulf has been exploited by artisanal fishermen for more than 60 years. The aim of this study is to evaluate the variations in the life cycle of the pulpito, and the factors that could account for these variations in three different coastal environments of San Matías Gulf, with differences in the physical, ecological and fisheries characteristics. This study was developed in San Antonio bay, El Fuerte and Islote Lobos. Monthly samplings (October 2005-2007) in the...

The release of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) into the environment has increased very substantially over the last decades leading to high concentrations in sediments of contaminated areas. To evaluate the consequences of long-term chronic exposure to PAHs, zebrafish were exposed, from their first meal at 5 days post fertilisation until they became reproducing adults, to diets spiked with three PAH fractions at three environmentally relevant concentrations with the medium concentration being in the range of 4.6–6.7 μg g−1 for total quantified PAHs including the 16 US-EPA indicator PAHs and alkylated derivatives. The fractions used were representative of PAHs of pyrolytic (PY) origin or of two different oils of differing compositions, a heavy fuel...

Comparison of three Gobiidae (Teleostei) life history strategies over their geographical range ArchiMer
Bouchereau, Jl; Guelorget, O.
This article summarizes the latest knowledge on the ecology of three gobies. The authors compile data published by various scientists who carried out their research under different conditions, using a variety of methods for collecting data and processing the results. The relationship between population structure and different environmental conditions was considered for three goby species Pomatoschistus minutus (Pallas, 1770), P. microps (Kroyer, 1838) and Gobius niger Linnaeus, 1758, in different geographical areas, notably the Mediterranean (Gulf of Lions and Adriatic) and cold temperate Atlantic (north of the English Channel) parts. In the three species, the life cycles in the Mediterranean, favoured by the local hydroclimate, are "contracted" (growth is...

Contribution des frayères côtières au recrutement du stock de seiche Sepia officinalis de Manche : lien entre le succès de la phase pré-recrutée et l'abondance de la ressource ArchiMer
Gras, Michael.
The English Channel cuttlefish Sepia officinalis is the most important cephalopod stock in the N-E Atlantic but is only managed by local measures, mainly due to a lack of suitable tools. The objective of this work is therefore to improve the knowledge of its population dynamic, particularly the parameters inuencing the resource abundance. After a summary of the state of the art, in a first step, the exploration of the stock structure during the reproduction period revealed that, in a warming and high fishing pressure context, the life history traits of cuttlefish have changed and a percentage of one year old cuttlefish are mature. In a second step, the inuence of the fuel price on the spatial allocation of the French trawling effort was highlighted and...

Dimensions of Wealth Dispersion Among Farm Operator Households: An Assessment of the Impact of Farm Subsidies AgEcon
El-Osta, Hisham S.; Mishra, Ashok K..
This paper uses microlevel data from the Agricultural Resource Management Survey to examine the changes in the distributions of household wealth and to assess the role farm subsidies play, among other factors, in affecting these distributions. The empirical analysis relies on the concept of the adjusted Gini coefficient and on fixed-effect regression procedures. Coefficients from fixed-effect estimation indicate a negative correlation between government payments and wealth dispersion, with the effect shifting toward more of a positive relation when government payments were allowed to interact with regional dummies.
