The antioxidant activity of five Agaricus sp. mushrooms was screened through chemical, biochemical and electrochemical techniques. The chemical assays allowed an evaluation of their reducing power and radical scavenging activity, while biochemical assays evaluated the lipid peroxidation inhibition capacity, using erythrocytes and brain cells as models; the electrochemical characterization of the mushrooms extracts were performed by cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry. All the species proved to have antioxidant activity and particularly, by the electrochemical techniques, it has been shown that mushroom extracts revealed similar electrochemical responses, suggesting similar electroactive chemical composition, and oxidation potentials more... |

Coriander is commonly used for medicinal purposes, food applications, cosmetics and perfumes. Herein, the production of antioxidants in vegetative parts (leaves and stems) of in vivo and in vitro grown samples was compared. In vitro samples were clone A- with notorious purple pigmentation in stems and leaves and clone B- green. Seeds were also studied as they are used to obtain in vivo and in vitro vegetative parts. Lipophilic (tocopherols, carotenoids and chlorophylls) and hydrophilic (sugars, ascorbic acid, phenolics, flavonols and anthocyanins) compounds were quantified. The antioxidant activity was evaluated by radical scavenging activity, reducing power and lipid peroxidation inhibition. The in vivo sample showed the highest antioxidant activity... |

Three Lamiaceae often used in Portuguese folk medicine: Ground ivy (Glechoma hederaceae L.), oregano (Origanum vulgare subsp. virens (Hoffmanns. & Link) Ietswaart) and mastic thyme (Thymus mastichina L.), revealed to be good sources of powerful antioxidants such as vitamins (ascorbic acid and tocopherols) and phenolics. The HPLC methodology developed for tocopherols analysis proved to be, after validation assays, sensitive and accurate. Ground ivy showed the highest levels of vitamins: ascorbic acid (168 2 mg/g dry weight) and tocopherols (3692 57 mg/g dry weight). The phenolics extraction was optimized using mastic tyme, and different conditions (water and ethanol:water 50% v/v, 30 min at 25 C and boiling temperature; ethanol and methanol, 24 h... |
