Earthworm assemblages in an ecotone between forest and arable field and their relations with soil properties. Repositório Alice
ZEITHAML, J.; PIZL, V.; SKLENICKA, P..
Abstract ? The objective of this work was to assess the effects of a forest-field ecotone on earthworm assemblages. Five sites (blocks) differing in the type of crop rotation used in the field were studied in Central Bohemia, Czech Republic. In each block, sampling was carried out in seven parallel rows perpendicular to a transect from a forest (oak or oak-pine) to the centre of a field, both in spring and autumn 2001?2003. Individual rows were located in the forest (5 m from the edge), in the forest edge, and in the field (at 5, 10, 25, 50 and 100 m distances from the forest edge). The density and biomass of earthworms were lowest in the forest, increased markedly in the forest edge, decreased again at 5 or 10 m distance from the forest edge and then...

Earthworms. Infoteca-e
ROMBKE, J.; GARCIA, M..
The species composition, abundance and biomass of eartworms were determined in two plots of a polyculture forestry plantation and in plots of nearby secondary and primary forest as part of the SHIFT Project ENV 52 since 1997, with objective to study the regeneration and better use of already degrade plots, to diminish the human impact on primary rain forest in Amazonia (Brasil).

Earthworms in central Amazonian primary and secondary forests and a polyculture forestry plantation. Repositório Alice
ROMBKER, J.; MELLER, M.; GARCIA, M..
Species composition, abundance and biomass of these earthworms were determined in a polyculture forestry plantation (POA/C) and in plots of nearby secondary (SEC) and primary (FLO) forests in Amazonia. The earthworms were collected using the formol extraction method. In five collections, between July 1997 and June 1998, only seven species were found (mainly Glossoscolecidae). One peregrine species (Pontoscolex corethrurus) was found in the polyculture plot and another (Dichogaster bolaui, Octochaetidae) nearby. The abundance of earthworms in the three plots is low for tropical rain forest sites (<1 ind m-2 - 5.5 ind m-2 compared to 1 ind m-2 - 189 ind m-2) but biomass (up to 20g fresh weight per square meter) is among the highest numbers ever found in...

Is tagging with visual implant elastomer a reliable technique for marking earthworms? Repositório Alice
BUTT. K. R.; BRIONES, M. J. I.; LOWE, C. N..
Abstract ? Visual implant elastomer (VIE) has recently been employed to investigate different aspects of earthworm ecology. However, a number of fundamental questions relating to the detection and positioning of the tag, its persistence and potential effects on earthworms remain unknown. Seven earthworm species belonging to three ecological groupings, with different pigmentation and burrowing behaviour, were tagged using different coloured VIE. External inspection after two days, one week and 1, 10 and 27 months were followed by preservation, dissection and internal inspection. Tags could be seen in living specimens to 27 months, and dissection revealed that in most cases they were lodged in the coelomic cavity, held in place by septa. However, over longer...

The effects of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and heavy metals on terrestrial annelids in urban soils. Repositório Alice
PIZI, V.; SCHLAGHAMERSKY, J.; TRISKA, J..
Abstract ? The effect of soil contamination by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and heavy metals on earthworms and enchytraeids was studied in urban parks, in Brno, Czech Republic. In spring and autumn 2007, annelids were collected and soil samples taken in lawns along transects, at three different distances (1, 5 and 30 m) from streets with heavy traffic. In both seasons, two parks with two transects each were sampled. Earthworms were collected using the electrical octet method. Enchytraeids were extracted by the wet funnel method from soil cores. All collected annelids were counted and identified. Basic chemical parameters and concentrations of 16 PAH, Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn were analysed from soil from each sampling point. PAH concentrations were...
