As the Messinian sea-level draw down associated with the Messinian Salinity Crisis is still questioned, we propose to show that the widely spread erosion surface affecting the Mediterranean margins is indeed linked to an exondation demonstrated from offshore and onshore data. Our study presents a comprehensive onshore to offshore correlation of the Messinian erosional surface. It is focused on small drainage systems or interfluve areas, outside of evaporite basins or incised canyons, where the Messinian erosion had not yet been studied previously: around Ibiza on the Balearic Promontory and around Orosei on the Eastern Sardinian margin, Tyrrhenian Basin, both areas where new offshore data were recently acquired. We show that the late Messinian erosion... |

In the framework of sustainable development, the anthropogenic impact of large coastal cities on the marine ecosystem is a key issue. This project aimed to improve our knowledge in marine ecosystem response to the anthropogenic supplies (from rivers, sewage outflows and atmosphere) from large cities. In particular, the goal is to underline how the physical forcing decreases or increases the anthropogenic impact on the coastal ecosystem and the assessment of the chemical contaminant (PCB) inputs (from city to sea) and exports (from mid-sea to open sea). |

A survey involving both permanent mooring and high frequency sampling was carried in the Bay of Banyuls-sur-Mer during the fall of 1999 to assess the effect of strong and unpredictable meteorological events on the functioning of a coastal Mediterranean ecosystem. A severe winter storm took place on 12 November, which generated waves with a significant height of 7 m and a sea surface rise of about 0.5 m. The near-bottom current speed at 24 m reached 30 cm s(-1). This storm induced a significant increase in total suspended matter through resuspension and then a subsequent increase in gross sedimentation rates. It also resulted in an increase of the proportion of refractory particulate organic matter in the water column. It also tended to increase nutrient... |
