Somatic embryogenesis (SE) in conifers is at the base of nearly allbiotechnology products that potentially might be developedincluding transgenic trees. SE is a powerful tool for clonalpropagation that has opened avenues for deployment of superiorclonally replicated planting stock in forest plantations. Althoughthe SE process can be managed for high efficiency there are stillseveral problems that require better understanding of underlyingcauses. Pinus pinaster is the main industrial conifer in South-western Europe, especially France. Advanced forestry and conventional genetic breeding for 50 years resulted in a 3-fold increase in wood productivity. Up to 15% increase in growth and straightness were effective with first-generation varieties but genetic redundancy is expected to lower forthcoming genetic gain. Maximizing genetic gain for historical and new selection criteria remains challenging owing to long generation time of Maritime pine and low ability for conventional clonal propagation. Pinus pinaster (Ait.) somatic embryogenesis (SE) has been developed during the last decade, and its application in tree improvement programs is underway. Nevertheless, a few more or less important problems still exist, which have an impact on the efficiency of specific SE stages. One phenomenon, which had been observed in embryogenic tissue (embryonal mass, EM) initiated from immature seed, has been the loss of the ability to produce mature somatic embryos after the tissue had been cultured for several months. Rooting patterns and fine root biomass of Pinus pinaster assessed by trench wall and core methods Inra

Variability of fine root (diameter < 2 mm) distribution was investigated in four 55 to 56-year-old Maritime pine (Pinus pinaster) stands using a combination of trench wall observations and destructive sampling. Our objectives were to assess patterns of fine root distribution, to estimate tree fine root biomass and to explore interactions with understorey vegetation in a gradient of relevant site conditions. Results showed that root density decreased with soil depth in all stands, and variability appeared to be highest in litter and subsoil layers especially where compacted soil layers occurred. Sudden and drastic changes in market value and environmental constraints in recent years would need a significant paradigm shift in current breeding technology to deliver suitable varieties. • Pour améliorer le suivi de la gestion durable des forêts de plantation, nous avons cherché à développer des indicateurs de biodiversité en prenant pour exemple la richesse en Coléoptères saproxyliques. Nous avons comparé l'approche directe, basée sur l'abondance ou l'occurrence de certaines espèces de coléoptères saproxyliques, et l'approche indirecte, basée sur les caractéristiques du bois mort comme variables prédictives.• Les Coléoptères ont été inventoriés à l'aide de pièges à interception dans 40 peuplements de pin maritime.
