In the male moth, Agrotis ipsilon, mating induces a transient inhibition of behavioural and central nervous responses to sex pheromone. Newly mated males are not attracted to sex pheromone, and the sensitivity of their antennal lobe (AL) neurons is lower than in virgin males. This rapid transient olfactory inhibition prevents them from re-mating unsuccessfully until they have refilled their sex glands. We hypothesized that this olfactory ‘switch off’ might be controlled by neuromodulators such as biogenic amines. Modulation of flight activity in Lobesia botrana Den. and Schiff. (Lepidoptera : Tortricidae) females studied in a wind tunnel Inra

We studied modulations of flight activity in European grapevine moth females (EGVM) by individual observations in a wind tunnel. The effect of different factors was analyzed: variation in atmospheric pressure prior to the experiments, time of day, first experience of flight, age, mating, and odor of tansy, which attracts females. The circadian flight activity showed a peak the hour preceding the onset of scotophase and sustained activity occurred during the 6 h around this peak. Females with a flight experience in the tunnel took off more quickly than naive ones (3.9 ± 7.4 vs 20.3 ± 22.8 s). Post-mating sexual abstinence in a male moth Inra

In most animals, male copulation is dependent on the detection and processing of female-produced sex pheromones. In males, a refractory post-ejaculatory interval (PEI) follows copulation, allowing them to avoid direct remating until they have replenished their reproductive tracts. In the moth Agrotis ipsilon, newly mated males show a transient inhibition of behavioral and central nervous responses to sex pheromone. Using nonpheromonal (plant) odors, pheromones and their mixture, we now show that the observed lack of pheromone response originates from differential post-mating odor processing in the brain. Drones had been selected for special features of their wing structure. Afterwards they were mated, by means of artificial insemination, with queen carrying similar wing features. The line "Trifolium", bred by this method, showed several characteristics with little variability. Eighteen offspring-queens of this line were placed in a mating-yard, which had no other colonies in a circle of 5.6km diameters, with carefully selected drones. Using the wing-structure as criterion one was able to demonstrate that only queens (15%) had mated with the desired drones, while the remaining queens had mated with drones of unknown origin.
