Bacterioplankton production determined by DNA synthesis, protein synthesis, and frequency of dividing cells in Tuamotu atoll lagoons and surrounding ocean IRD

This study compares three independent methods used for estimating bacterioplankton production in waters from the lagoon (mesotrophic) and the surrounding ocean (oligotrophic) of two atolls from the Tuamotu archipelago (French Polynesia). Thymidine and leucine incorporation were calibrated in dilution cultures and gave consistent results when the first was calibrated against cell multiplication and the second against protein synthesis. This study demonstrates that determining conversion factors strongly depends on the selected calculation method (modified derivative, integrative, and cumulative). Bottom-up and top-down control of bacterioplankton from eutrophic to oligotrophic sites in the tropical northeastern Atlantic ocean IRD

Bacterioplankton biomass and production were determined over the whole water column of a eutrophic, a mesotrophic and an oligotrophic site (2300, 3200 and 4500 m deep) in the tropical NE Atlantic Ocean during a EUMELI cruise in May-June 1992. This resulted in an exceptionally large amplitude of data, with abundance, biomass and production. These data were analyzed in order to determine whether bacterioplankton was controlled by bottom-up or top-down processes. Regressions of log-transformed bacterioplankton biomass versus log-transformed production were tested at the different sites and in different layers. Temporal and spatial stability of bacterioplankton biomass and productivity in an atoll lagoon IRD

Spatial and temporal variations of bacterioplankton biomass, production and growth rates were investigated 6 times from 1991 to 1994 in Tikehau lagoon (Tuamotu, French Polynesia). The water column was homogeneous from the surface to the bottom (20 m) at the reference station but some horizontal variations were detected, with biomass and production increasing from the reef-flat spillways (oceanic water inflow) to the main part of the lagoon and decreasing from the relatively eutrophic shore (near the village) to the main part of the lagoon.
