Acetylcholine in the larval food, honey, and stored pollen of a stingless bee, Melipona quadrifasciata National Institute of Agronomic Research
Welsh, John H.; Nogueira-Neto, Paulo; Jaeger, Celso P.; Ancona Lopez, Ana Amelia.
1) Using several methods, the larval food of Melipona quadrifasciata was found to contain amounts of acetylcholine estimated to range between O. 5 and 2.0 mg. equivalents of acetylcholine chloride per gram of larval food. Similar amounts have been reported for the larval food of the honey, bee, Apis mellifera. 2) The larval food of M. quadrifasciata was also found to contain a large amount of choline and an unidentified substance that was soluble in ethanol, gave a blue fluorescence, reacted with Dragendorf's reagent, and had a weak acetylcholine-like action. In one sample of larval food, a substance with the properties of glycine betaine was also found. 3) Samples of stored pollen were also found to contain acetylcholine, choline and the unidentified...

Rebert, A.F..

Assessing the insect pollination service to annual crops in changing landscapes across Europe Inra
Vaissière, B.E.; Carre, G.; Bommarco, R.; Krewenka, K.; Gallai, N.; Morison, N.; Potts, S.G.; Roberts, S.P.M.; Steffan-Dewenter, I.; Szentgyörgyi, H.; Westphal, C.; Woyciechowski, M.; EEF, European Ecological Federation (GBR).
In Europe, 80% of crop species are dependent upon or benefit from pollination by insects, and mostly bees. Insect pollination is both a major ecosystem service that contributes to human well-being and a production practice used by farmers. Wild bees contribute to the pollination of most crop species and their importance are increasinglyrecognised since their interaction with honey bees can significantly enhance theiroverall pollinating activity. Yet significant declines have been reported for wild bee populations and honey bee colonies alike in Europe and there is clear evidence that land use changes has affected bee populations in abundance and diversity. We quantified the effect of landscape context on bee communities and the pollination service they...

From the raw material to the finished product : honey National Institute of Agronomic Research
Maurizio, Anna.
This article is based on the paper read by Dr. Anna Maurizio at the Bee Research Association Conference on "Flower-bee relationship", help at the Kent Farm and Horticultural Institute at Sittingbourne on 27-29th July 1962. For over thirty years Dr. Maurizio has been engaged in research work on various problems in this field, including pollen analysis of honey, and also bee nutrition in relation to pollen consumption. For her lecture she chose a subject she is at present working on the effect on honey of the various processes the raw material undergoes : in the plant itself, in the bodies of the foraging bees and the house bees, in the cells of the comb, and in the vessel in which the honey is finally stored. Much of this work is so new that it is not yet...

Studies on the treatment of contaminated combs and honey with high velocity electrons National Institute of Agronomic Research
Katznelson, H.; Jamieson, C.A.; Lawton, E.J.; Bellamy, W.D..
High velocity electrons are effective in killing Bacillus larvae spores in thin sections of comb containing American foulbrood scale and in honey. The lethal dose for an initial concentration of 4x10(6) spores per ml is in the range of 2 to 4x10(6) equivalent roentgen, a value that is higher than that required for other sporeformers, such as bacillus subtilis. Honey of the initial concentration irradiated with sublethal doses 1x10(6) and 2x10(6)r. did not cause AFB disease when fed to healthy colonies of bees, whereas the unirradiated honey produced extensive disease within one month. Honey contaminated naturally with osmophilic yeasts (initial concentration 2040 per ml) was completely sterilizes by an irradiation dose of 0,5x10(6)r. Honey contaminated...
