A review of references on Acarapis woodi (Rennie) indicated that this acarapis mite is not as serious as has generally been stated in American beekeeping literature. It is not considered to be the cause of Isle of Wight disease of bees. The quarantine against the importation of honey bees into the United States, except from Canada, is based on the probable effect this pest might have on the beekeeping industry. The rediscovery of an external acarapis mite in the United States in 1959, raised the question as to the actual relationship of acarapis mites to bees. Calcium activates a chloride conductance likely involved in olfactory receptor neuron repolarization in the moth Spodoptera littoralis Inra

The response of insect olfactory receptor neurons (ORNs) to odorants involves the opening of Ca2+-permeable channels, generating an increase in intracellular Ca2+ concentration. Here, we studied the downstream effect of this Ca2+ rise in cultured ORNs of the moth Spodoptera littoralis. Intracellular dialysis of Ca2+ from the patch pipette in whole-cell patch-clamp configuration activated a conductance with a K-1/2 of 2.8 mu M. Intracellular and extracellular anionic and cationic substitutions demonstrated that Cl- carries this current. In insects, biogenic amines have been shown to play an important role in olfactory plasticity. In a first attempt to decipher the underlying molecular mechanisms, we report the molecular cloning and precise expression pattern of a newly identified octopamine/tyramine-receptor-encoding gene in the antennae of the noctuid moth Mamestra brassicae (MbraOAR/TAR). In the male moth Agrotis ipsilon behavioural response and antennal lobe (AL) neuron sensitivity to the female-produced sex pheromone increase with age and juvenile hormone (JH) level. We recently showed that the neuromodulator, octopamine (OA), interacts with JH in this age-dependent olfactory plasticity. To further elucidate its role, we cloned a full cDNA encoding a protein that presents biochemical features essential to OA/tyramine receptor (AipsOAR/TAR) function. All sensory neurons transduce their natural stimulus, whether a molecule, a photon, or a mechanical force, in an electrical current flowing through their sensory membrane via similar molecular and ionic mechanisms. Olfactory receptor neurons (ORNs), whose stimuli are volatile molecules, are no exception, including one of the best known: the exquisitely sensitive ORNs of male moths that detect the sexual pheromone released by conspecific females. Efficient olfactory coding in the pheromone receptor neuron of a moth Inra

Efficient coding is an overarching principle, well tested in visual and auditory neurobiology, which states that sensory neurons are adapted to the statistical characteristics of their natural stimulus - in brief, neurons best process those stimuli that occur most frequently. To assess its validity in olfaction, we examine the pheromone communication of moths, in which males locate their female mates by the pheromone they release. We determine the characteristics of the pheromone plume which are best detected by the male reception system. Our knowledge of the composition of the waxes on the surfaces of Eucalyptus leaves is growing but that of plant primary metabolites has been completely overlooked. The diffusion of primary metabolites above the cuticle exposes them to a variety of herbivorous taxa and has the potential to influence their responses to that plant. Juvenile leaves of two families of Eucalyptus globulus Labill. ssp. globulus and two families of E. nitens (Deane & Maiden) Maiden had 11 out of 16 of the epicuticular waxes that were detected in common. Mating-induced transient inhibition of responses to sex pheromone in a male moth is not mediated by octopamine or serotonin Inra

In the male moth, Agrotis ipsilon, mating induces a transient inhibition of behavioural and central nervous responses to sex pheromone. Newly mated males are not attracted to sex pheromone, and the sensitivity of their antennal lobe (AL) neurons is lower than in virgin males. This rapid transient olfactory inhibition prevents them from re-mating unsuccessfully until they have refilled their sex glands. The inventory of the alien Acari of Europe includes 96 species alien to Europe and 5 cryptogenic species. Among the alien species, 87 are mites and 9 tick species. Besides ticks which are obligate ectoparasites, 14 mite species belong to the parasitic/predator regime. Among these species, some invaded Europe with rodents (8 spp.) and others are parasitic to birds (2 spp). Th e remaining 77 mite species are all phytophagous and among these 40% belong to the Eriophyidae (37 spp.) and 29% to the Tetranychidae (27 spp.) families. Molecular characterization of a phospholipase C β potentially involved in moth olfactory transduction Inra

To clarify the role of phospholipase C (PLC) in insect olfactory transduction, we have undertaken its molecular identification in the moth Spodoptera littoralis. From the analysis of a male antennal expressed sequence tag library, we succeeded in cloning a full-length cDNA encoding a PLC that belongs to the cluster of PLC-b subtypes. In adult males, the PLC-b transcript was located predominantly in brain and antennae where its presence was detected in the olfactory sensilla trichodea. Three-dimensional antennal lobe atlas of the oriental fruit moth, Cydia molesta (Busck) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae): comparison of male and female glomerular organization Inra

The oriental fruit moth Cydia molesta is an important pest and the behavioural role of olfactory signals such as pheromones and plant volatiles have been studied extensively in both sexes. To understand odour processing further, however, detailed knowledge of the anatomy of the olfactory system is crucial. In the present study, an atlas of the antennal lobe (AL) is presented based on the three-dimensional reconstructions of both ALs of three male and three female brains by means of neuroanatomical and computational approaches. We identified 48-49 "ordinary" glomeruli and one large glomerulus situated at the entrance of the antennal nerve in males, and 49-52 "ordinary" glomeruli and one large glomerulus in the ventro-medial part of the AL in females....

How information is transformed along synaptic processing stages is critically important to understand the neural basis of behavior in any sensory system. In moths, males rely on sex pheromone to find their mating partner. It is essential for a male to recognize the components present in a pheromone blend, their ratio, and the temporal pattern of the signal.
