Biotransformation of C-13-norisoprenoids and monoterpenes by a cell suspension culture of cv. Gamay (Vitis vinifera) Inra

A cell suspension culture of cv. Gamay was studied for its ability to metabolize two different C13-norisoprenoidic volatiles, β-ionone and dehydrovomifoliol, together with monoterpenes, geraniol and linalool, biogenetically common pathways sharing compounds. β-Ionone was totally metabolized leading to fourteen norisoprenoidic volatiles oxygenated mainly at carbons 3 or 4 of the cyclohexane ring or reduced at side chain. The biotransformation of dehydrovomifoliol was at a lesser extent, giving rise to oxygenated and reduced derivatives. The norisoprenoidic metabolites were present both under free and glycosylated forms. Geraniol and linalool were also metabolized, leading to several free and glycosylated compounds

Host selection in Tomicus piniperda L.: composition of monoterpene hydrocarbons in relation to attack frequency in the shoot feeding phase. Inra

The aim of this study was to investigate the host selection capacity of the pine shoot beetle, Tomicus piniperda, in the shoot-feeding phase and analyze the chiral and non-chiral host volatiles by means of GC-MS and 2D-GC in five Pinus species originating from France (Pinus sylvestris, P. halepensis, P. nigra laricio, P. pinaster maritima, P. pinaster mesogeensis). Dominating monoterpenes were (-)- alpha -pinene, (+)- alpha -pinene, (-)- beta -pinene and (+)-3-carene. The amounts of the enantiomers varied considerably within and among the species. In a principal component analysis-plot, based on the absolute amounts of 18 monoterpene hydrocarbons, separation of the pine species into two groups was obtained. Identification of geraniol as the active component in the Nassanof pheromone of the honey bee National Institute of Agronomic Research

Honey bees (Apis mellifera L.) attract each other by a variety of biological stimuli. The olfactory stimulus produced by the worker bees has received attention during a number of investigations ever since Sladen1 suggested that the attractant odour originated from a special organ discovered by Nassanoff in 1883. This scent organ is located on the anterior part of the seventh abdominal tergum of the worker bee.

Isolement et synthèse de l'espintanol, nouveau monoterpène antiparasitaire IRD

The in vitro leishmanicidal and trypanocidal activities of a petroleum ether extract of #Oxandra espintana$ have been investigated. Four aromatic monoterpenes were isolated, of which two are novel : espintanol (3a), responsible for the antiparasite activity, and O-methylespintanol (4). Espintanol was tested in vitro on 20 strains of #Trypanosoma cruzi$ and 12 strains of #Leishmania$ spp. Its structure was determined by spectroscopic methods and confirmed by its preparation starting from carvacrol. Monoterpene effect on feeding choice by deer Inra

A previous study showed that Sitka black-tailed deer (Odocoileus hemionus sitkensis) consumption was negatively correlated with monoterpene content in western redcedar (Thuja plicata). To test whether these monoterpenes were deterrent to Sitka black-tailed deer, we performed feeding choice experiments with four hydrocarbon (sabinene, myrcene, α-pinene, and d + l-limonene) and one oxygenated (α,β-thujone) monoterpene solution at their highest natural concentration in western redcedar foliage. To test whether deer response was species specific, we ran similar experiments on European roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) and rusa deer (Cervus timorensis russa). In moths, the components of the female pheromone blend are detected in the male antennae by pheromone olfactory receptor neurons (Ph-ORNs) expressing narrowly tuned olfactory receptors. Responses to sex pheromones have generally been thought to be independent from the odorant background. However, interactions between pheromone components and plant volatiles have been reported at behavioral and detection levels. Production of geraniol by honey bees of various ages National Institute of Agronomic Research

The amount of geraniol obtained by a standard procedure from the Nassanoff gland of the honey bee varied from zero to 1·5 μg per bee, depending on the age of the bees. Newly emerged bees had no geraniol. Guard bees produced ca. 0·3 μg per bee and a marked increase to ca. 1·0 μg per bee occurred when the bees began to forage.
