African Penguins Spheniscus Demersus Along The Kwazulu-Natal Coast, 1981–1999 OceanDocs
Whittington, P.A.; Underhill, L.G.; Esmonde-White, D.A.; Wilkinson, C.P..
The African Penguin is rare east of Algoa Bay, Eastern Cape, South Africa. Ninety-nine penguins were found onshore along the coast of KwaZulu-Natal in 1981–1999, mostly in a state of starvation. Of these, 77% were between June and October during, and immediately after, the ‘sardine run’ of Sardine Sardinops sagax; 95% of birds that were aged were first-year birds; 96% were in the southern half of KwaZulu-Natal, south of Mtunzini (29°S) where the sardine run is strongest. The observations suggest that juvenile penguins from the nearest breeding colonies, in Algoa Bay, are drawn eastwards by the migrating Sardines; when these shoals dissipate, a lack of food leads to them coming ashore.

An Annotated Bibliography of Available Literature regarding cetacean Interactions with Tuna Pure Seine Fisheries Outside of the eastern Tropical Pacific OceanDocs
Edwards, E.F.; Donahue, M..
A review of currently available literature conceming interactions between tuna purse-seines and dolphins outside the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean (ETP) does not indicate any large, sustained, or widespread practice of setting purse seine nets around cetaceans for the purpose of catching tuna in any oceanic area other than in the ETP. While a number of individual reports exist of purse-seine sets made on cetaceans during the process of fishing for tuna in areas other than the ETP, there is no quantitative or even anecdotal indication that large-scale sustained directed fishing on cetaceans during tuna purse-seining occurs anywhere other than in the ETP. However, this lack of information should not be mistaken for conclusive evidence that such large-scale...

An ecosystem approach for the assessment of fisheries impacts on marine top predators: the Bay of Biscay case study ArchiMer
Lassalle, Geraldine; Gascuel, Didier; Le Loch, Francois; Lobry, Jeremy; Pierce, Graham John; Ridoux, Vincent; Santos, Maria Begona; Spitz, Jerome; Niquil, Nathalie.
A number of marine mammal populations is currently threatened by their interactions with fisheries. The present study aimed to provide insights into the severity of potential impacts of operational and biological interactions between top predators and fisheries, in the Bay of Biscay region. Our approach was to modify an Ecopath with Ecosim (EwE) model describing the overall structure and function of the ecosystem by including landings and discards of exploited stocks and estimations of the bycatch of non-target compartments. Second, a set of ecological indices and a trophic level (TL)-based model (EcoTroph, ET) were derived from the EwE model. ET was used to simulate the effects of increasing fishing pressure on the ecosystem and, more particularly, on top...

Morizur, Yvon; Gaudou, Olivier; Demaneche, Sebastien.
During the years 2008 to 2013 several observations of catches were planned on board of set netters fishing in the bay of Biscay, in the English Channel, in the North sea and in the Mediterranean area (around Corsica). All the observations were done on nets without pingers and they were pooled to provide an average bycatch rate of marine mammals by fleet. Estimates of annual bycatch by using the fishing efforts of the year 2012 were provided by fleet. Harbour porpoise Phocoena phocoena was the most common bycatch in set nets. An average annual estimate of 600 harbour porpoises was obtained for the French fleet; other species recorded in set nets were mainly common dolphin Delphinus delphis, striped dolphin Stenella coeruleoalba and the two species of seals...

Lurton, Xavier; Antoine, Loic.
The use of acoustical systems in various human activities in the ocean (industry, defence, science) raises the issue of their impact upon marine mammals populations. Several serious accidents linked to the use of naval sonars led the military, industrial and scientific communities to investigate the potential dangers of their own activity. This report aims at identifying the risks for the cetaceans linked to the use of acoustic and seismic systems currently used for oceanographic science. The analysis proposed here stays within the frame of bibliography synthesis and elementary modelling, and brings no new scientific elements on the topic. An overview of the status of cetacean populations is given first, with a summary of the possible acoustical...

Goujon, Michel; Antoine, Loic; Collet, Anne; Fifas, Spyros.
This document presents the results of a study on the impact of the french albacore tuna drift net fishery, mainly at the dolphins population level. Data collected during two embarked observers campains in 1992 and 1993 and the results of a sighting survey in 1993 give an estimation of the population size of common and striped dolphins (61 888 and 73 843) and mean values of ratio fishing of mortality (0.7 and 1.6%). A model was built in order to simulate the effect of the 5% upper limits of fishing mortality (1.5 and 3%). These values would leed to an annual rate of decrease of -1 %. It is unlikely that such values would jeopardize the survival and the presence of these species. Total incidental catches represent 15% of these total catch; albacore tuna...

Biological and ecological factors related to trace element levels in harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena) from European waters ArchiMer
Lahaye, V; Bustamante, Paco; Law, J.r; Learmonth, J.a; Santos, M.b.; Boon, J.p.; Rogan, E; Dabin, W; Addink, M.j.; Lopez, A; Zuur, A.f.; Pierce, G.j.; Caurant, Florence.
Selected trace elements (Cd, Cu, Hg, Se, Zn) were measured in the kidneys and the liver of 104 harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena) stranded along the coasts of France, Galicia (Spain), Ireland, Scotland (UK), and the Netherlands. Generally, relatively low concentrations of toxic elements were encountered in the tissues of European porpoises, except for two individuals, which displayed high hepatic Hg concentrations. Also, elevated Cd levels obtained in Scottish porpoises could be related to their feeding preferences and this result suggests an increase of the proportion of cephalopods in their diet with latitude. Moreover, significant geographical differences were seen in hepatic Zn concentrations; the elevated Zn concentrations displayed by porpoises...

Morizur, Yvon; Gaudou, Olivier; Miossec, Dominique; Toulhoat, Lucile; Gamblin, Caroline.
Up to now there has been no strong investigation on by-catch of marine mammals in the French set net fisheries of the English Channel (ICES areas VIIe,d & IVc) as the EC 812/2004 Regulation does not oblige the state members to put observers on board of vessels in the ICES area VII. A study named FilManCet has been started end 2008-beginning 2009 to focus on the by-catch occurring on the set net vessels (whatever the hull length is) issued from Boulogne and Dunkerque ports (fisheries in VIId&IVc) and also from several ports of North of Brittany. In this study which is conducted by the Fishing Industry, the data are made available to the scientists of Ifremer who has prepared also the sampling scheme for observation at sea. Two observers are employed...

Cetacean Species Occurring in the Mediterranean and Black Seas OceanDocs
Notarbartolo di Sciara, G..
Twenty one species of cetaceans occur in various degrees of abundance in the Mediterranean Sea and in the Black Sea. This list corresponds to Annex 1 of the Agreement, with the addition of three species known to have occurred in the Mediterranean in subsequent times. The list also roughly corresponds to the species occurring in the Contiguous Atlantic Area, however we must caution that a considerable number of other species, commonly present throughout the Atlantic Ocean, may occur there. Furthermore, we note that the number of species which are known to occur in the Agreement area is likely to grow with time, as the attention of scientists and laypersons towards cetaceans increases, and considering that species hitherto unreported from the region may...

Cetaceans in the Indian Ocean Sanctuary: A Review OceanDocs
Parsons, E.C.M.; Jenner, K.C.S.; Baldwin, R.; Rudolph, P.; de Boer, M.N.; Eyre, E.L.; Simmonds, M.P.; Keith, S.G.; Rosenbaum, H.C.; Peddemors, V.M.; McCabe, K.A.; Burton, C.L.K.; Jenner, M.N.M..
This paper presents a synthesis of mainly published information relating to the cetaceans of the Indian Ocean Sanctuary (IOS). It highlights a number of new studies and other initiatives linked to the Sanctuary and reviews the current understanding of the biology of the Sanctuary’s cetaceans. Cetaceans in the IOS are exposed to a range of threats, including by-catch and the effects of climate change. Whilst no quantification can be made of these threats at this time, they may still be significant for the conservation of populations. The role of the IOS in stimulating research to further establish the status of cetacean populations is acknowledged.

Coastal migratory connections of humpback whales, Megaptera Novaeangliae Borowski, 1871, southern Chile OceanDocs
Galleti, Bárbara; Capella, Juan; Gibbons, Jorge; Cabrera, Elsa.
There is not published information on a comparative analysis about interchange of individual humpback whales between coastal areas of aggregation of the species along southern Chilean coast. Here we present a comparison of individually photo-identified humpback whales obtained off northwestern Chiloé Island, in Patagonian and Fuegian fjords and in the Strait of Magellan near Carlos III Island , to discover movements and interchange of individuals. Comparison of photographs resulted in conclusive matches of four individuals within the four study locations: two whales from Canal Wide (49°55’S, 74°30’W), one whale from Canal Cockburn (54°18’S, 72°15’W) and a mother-calf pair off northwestern Chiloé Island matched whales found near Carlos III. The minimum...
