Activity of soil microbial biomass altered by land use in the southwestern Amazon Bragantia
Mazzetto,André Mancebo; Cerri,Carlos Eduardo Pellegrino; Feigl,Brigitte Josefine; Cerri,Carlos Clemente.
ABSTRACT The increasing demand for food creates environmental problems, mainly due to the removal of native vegetation cover for agriculture expansion in Brazil. These changes in land use lead to changes in the soil organic matter dynamics. Microorganisms represent the most biological and physiological diversity in soil, as well as are responsible for more than 95% of the decomposition and nutrient cycling processes. The objective in this research was to check if there is difference of patterns in activity of soil microbial biomass under varied natural vegetation, pastures in use and agricultural systems recently established. The area covered by this study corresponds to the states of Rondônia and Mato Grosso. Canonical variate analysis was used in...

Bacteria diversity and microbial biomass in forest, pasture and fallow soils in the southwestern Amazon basin Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Cenciani,Karina; Lambais,Marcio Rodrigues; Cerri,Carlos Clemente; Azevedo,Lucas Carvalho Basílio de; Feigl,Brigitte Josefine.
It is well-known that Amazon tropical forest soils contain high microbial biodiversity. However, anthropogenic actions of slash and burn, mainly for pasture establishment, induce profound changes in the well-balanced biogeochemical cycles. After a few years the grass yield usually declines, the pasture is abandoned and is transformed into a secondary vegetation called "capoeira" or fallow. The aim of this study was to examine how the clearing of Amazon rainforest for pasture affects: (1) the diversity of the Bacteria domain evaluated by Polymerase Chain Reaction and Denaturing Gradient Gel Electrophoresis (PCR-DGGE), (2) microbial biomass and some soil chemical properties (pH, moisture, P, K, Ca, Mg, Al, H + Al, and BS), and (3) the influence of...

Nogueira,Leandro Ribeiro; Silva,Cristiane Figueira da; Pereira,Marcos Gervasio; Gaia-Gomes,João Henrique; Silva,Eliane Maria Ribeiro da.
ABSTRACT The removal of original vegetation for crops and pasture production and then followed by natural regeneration is a standard practice in the Atlantic Forest, which has produced patches with different degrees of degradation and regeneration across the landscape. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of replacement of native forest by pasture and natural regeneration of vegetation on soil and on soil organic matter (SOM) dynamics in the dry and rainy season in an Atlantic Forest fragment in Passa Vinte, Minas Gerais (MG), Brazil. Soil samples were collected in the rainy and dry season, at a depth of 0.00-0.05 m. The variables determined were total organic carbon (TOC) and particle-size fractions of SOM [particulate organic carbon (POC)...

Carbon Stocks in Compartments of Soil Organic Matter 31 Years after Substitution of Native Cerrado Vegetation by Agroecosystems Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Ferreira,Eloisa Aparecida Belleza; Bustamante,Mercedes Maria da Cunha; Resck,Dimas Vital Siqueira; Figueiredo,Cícero Célio de; Pinto,Alexandre de Siqueira; Malaquias,Juaci Vitória.
ABSTRACT Changes in carbon stocks in different compartments of soil organic matter of a clayey Latossolo Vermelho Distrófico (Typic Haplustox), caused by the substitution of native savanna vegetation (cerrado sensu stricto) by agroecosystems, were assessed after 31 years of cultivation. Under native vegetation, a stock of 164.5 Mg ha-1 C was estimated in the 0.00-1.00 m layer. After 31 years of cultivation, these changes in soil C stocks were detected to a depth of 0.60 m. In the case of substitution of cerrado sensu stricto by no-tillage soybean-corn rotation, a reduction of at least 11 % of the soil C pools was observed. However, the adoption of no-tillage as an alternative to tillage with a moldboard plow (conventional system) reduced CO2 emissions by...

Carvalho,Fernanda de; Moreira,Fatima Maria de Souza; Cardoso,Elke Jurandy Bran Nogueira.
Araucaria angustifolia, commonly named Araucaria, is a Brazilian native species that is intensively exploited due to its timber quality. Therefore, Araucaria is on the list of species threatened by extinction. Despite the importance of soil for forest production, little is known about the soil properties of the highly fragmented Araucaria forests. This study was designed to investigate the use of chemical and biological properties as indicators of conservation and anthropogenic disturbance of Araucaria forests in different sampling periods. The research was carried out in two State parks of São Paulo: Parque Estadual Turístico do Alto do Ribeira and Parque Estadual de Campos de Jordão. The biochemical properties carbon and nitrogen in microbial biomass...

Fia,Fátima R. L.; Borges,Alisson C.; Matos,Antonio T. de; Duarte,Iolanda C. S.; Fia,Ronaldo; Campos,Lidiane C. de.
In recent decades the use of anaerobic fixed bed reactors has been established in Brazil for the treatment of different effluents. As the capability of retaining microorganisms by support media (fixed bed) is a factor influencing the performance of these reactors, the present study aims at evaluating the influence of three fixed bed on the effectiveness of treating an effluent with high pollution potential: wastewater from coffee grain processing (WCP), with organic matter concentrations varying from 812 to 5320 mg L-1 in the form of chemical oxygen demand (COD). Support media used for the immobilization of biomass were: blast furnace slag, polyurethane foam and #2 crushed stone with porosities of 53, 95 and 48%, respectively. The mean efficiency of COD...

The evolution of microbial biomass based on chlorophyll a, pheopigments, proteins, particulate carbon and nitrogen, ATP and total viable aerobic bacterias measurements, is studied on three oyster ponds in relation with different densities of reared oysters Crassostrea gigas (Thunberg). Chlorophyll a important amounts characteristics of theses middles (13 to 100µg.1(1) are in part consumed when the density of oysters is important, comparatively ATP increase to 30µg.1(1). With important values of (ATP/carbon) 10(3) ratios, upper than 10, we could think that the development of large silicified phytoplanktonic species should be favoured by oysters particularly the diatom Navicula ostrearia (Bory)

Microbial and soil properties in restoration areas in the jequitinhonha valley, Minas Gerais Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Santos,Danielle Cristina Fonseca; Grazziotti,Paulo Henrique; Silva,Alexandre Christófaro; Trindade,Aldo Vilar; Silva,Enilson de Barros; Costa,Lidiomar Soares da; Costa,Hesmael Antônio Orlandi.
To mitigate the impacts of eucalypt monoculture, forestry companies in the Upper Jequitinhonha Valley (MG) have adopted the insertion of strips of native vegetation in-between the commercial plantations. The method used for the creation of these corridors is to allow spontaneous regrowth of native vegetation in areas previously under eucalypt. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of cover crops on microbial and soil properties for a detailed description of the restoration process of native vegetation in forest soils of the Jequitinhonha Valley. The treatments were represented by an initial restoration stage (< 4 years) with or without remaining eucalypt and the advanced restoration stage (> 4 years) with or without remaining...
