Academic Achievement and Perception of Two Teaching Methods in Histology: Light Microscopy and Digital Systems International Journal of Morphology
Becerra G,Daniela; Grob L. P,Melisa; Rodríguez R,Ángel; Barker M,María José; Consiglieri L,Lucas; Ferri G,Giorgio; Sabag S,Natividad.
With the advent of digital systems, the role of the microscope as an irreplaceable instrument in the practical teaching of histology has been called into question. In this study academic performance and student perception for three learning methods was compared: digital systems, microscopy, and microscopy plus digital systems, in the muscle tissue unit of the morphology course for first-year dentistry at the Universidad de los Andes, Santiago, Chile. Ninety-five students were divided into 3 groups: Group 1: individual optical microscopy, Group 2: digital systems (one projector per room), and Group 3: microscopy plus digital systems. All participants observed the same striate muscle, cardiac striated muscle, and smooth muscle mounts. Their diagnostic...

Cellular Changes in the Placenta in Pregnancies Complicated with Diabetes International Journal of Morphology
Verma,Ranjana; Mishra,Sabita; Kaul,Jagat Mohini.
Placenta is the most accurate record of the infant prenatal experience. After delivery if the placenta is examined minutely, it provides much insight into the prenatal health of the baby and the mother. In diabetic pregnancy, placental weight is higher in comparison to normal pregnancy. To study the cellular differences that might contribute to larger size of placenta, light microscopic analysis was performed on 25 full term placentas, out of which 20 were of Gestational diabetes mellitus (12 controlled on diet, 8 controlled on insulin) and 5 control group. Tissue sections were processed and analyzed. Birth weight of neonate, placental weight, vascular pattern of chorionic blood vessels and site of attachment of umbilical cord were recorded. In the...

Electron Microscopic Evaluation of the Secretory Mechanisms of Renin from Juxtaglomerular Cells International Journal of Morphology
Aktas,Ranan Gulhan; Karabay,Gulten; Taskinalp,Oguz; Kutlu,A. Kemal.
Although the structure and the functions of juxtaglomerular cells (JG) have been well defined, there is still a controversy about the secretory mechanisms of renin from these cells. It has been assumed that exocytosis is the main secretory mechanism in these cells in many studies, while others suggest that secretion occurs in a quite different way in these cells. There are several studies suggesting that diacrine secretion, which is very difficult to visualize, might be the other mechanism for secretion of renin. This study is an attempt to find the answers of these questions by identifying the fine structural features of the secretory granules in juxtaglomerular cells. Cyclosporin A (CyA) has been used in the current experimental study since it has...

Estrogen Receptors in Immunohistochemically Stained Slides: Comparing Subjective and Computerized Evaluation Methods International Journal of Morphology
Millas,Ieda; Barros,Mirna Duarte; Curcio,Daniella Franco; Buck,Hudson Sousa; Liquidato,Bianca Maria.
Immunohistochemistry is a specific and sensitive staining method for detection of several proteins. One important function of this method is to help us on the diagnosis of the presence of specific receptors as the estrogen receptors. The aim of this study was to compare two different methods to evaluate immunohistochemical staining intensity to detect the presence of ER in the nasal mucosa tissue: one using a digital system and the other through conventional direct microscopy observation. Sixty two stained samples were observed and analyzed under optic microscopy by three specialized professionals, who have graded intensity from: absent, mild, moderate and intense staining. Afterwards, an objective measurement was obtained by a relative optical density...

Induction of apoptosis by UV in the flat oyster, Ostrea edulis ArchiMer
Gervais, Ophelie; Renault, Tristan; Arzul, Isabelle.
Apoptosis is a fundamental feature in the development of many organisms and tissue systems. It is also a mechanism of host defense against environmental stress factors or pathogens by contributing to the elimination of infected cells. Hemocytes play a key role in defense mechanisms in invertebrates and previous studies have shown that physical or chemical stress can increase apoptosis in hemocytes in mollusks. However this phenomenon has rarely been investigated in bivalves especially in the flat oyster Ostrea edulis. The apoptotic response of hemocytes from flat oysters, O. edulis, was investigated after exposure to UV and dexamethasone, two agents known to induce apoptosis in vertebrates. Flow cytometry and microscopy were combined to demonstrate that...

BENTO, J. A. C.; FERREIRA, K. C.; BASSINELLO, P. Z.; SOUZA NETO, M. A. de..
Starch, a carbohydrate used as a reserve of energy in most plants, is widely used in the food industry, either as a main component or as a thickener. Considering the application of this as an ingredient in the food industry, the study of the morphological and thermal properties of this food is of great importance because it can predict its behavior during and after the processing of this. Methodologies such as scanning electron microscopy, light scattering and optical microscopy are the most used tools in the morphological characterization of the starch granule generating accurate results and good quality. Regarding the methodologies for the study of thermal properties, the rapid amylographic analyzer and the differential scanning calorimetry are the most...
