Characterization of Ectomycorrhizal species through molecular biology tools and morphotyping Scientia Agricola
Clasen,Bárbara Estevão; Silveira,Andressa de Oliveira; Baldoni,Daiana Bortoluzzi; Montagner,Daiane Fiuza; Jacques,Rodrigo Josemar Seminoti; Antoniolli,Zaida Inês.
ABSTRACT: Mycorrhizae are mutualistic associations between fungi and plant roots. These symbiotic associations are abundant and occur in 75 to 80 % of plants. Ectomycorrhizal fungi are very important in ecosystems, because their mutualistic association with plants of different species helps nutrients and water absorption, as well as protection of the host plant against pathogens and abiotic stresses. Most ectomycorrhizal fungi belong to the Basidiomycota class, such as the following genera: Amanita, Hebeloma, Hysterangium, Laccaria, Lactarius, Rhizopogon, Russula, Scleroderma, Suillus, Tricholoma, among others. Morphological studies on ectomycorrhizae report important results in understanding the species biodiversity. However, the use of molecular biology...

Customized cryopreservation protocols for chlorophytes based on cell morphology. Repositório Alice
FERNANDES, M. S.; GARCIA, L. C.; NASCIMENTO, R. C.; SANTANA, H.; MORAIS, P. B.; CAPDEVILLE, G. de; BRASIL, B. dos S. A. F..
The development of efficient algae cryopreservation methods is pivotal to the establishment of long-term culture collections as well as algae breeding and genetic modification programs. However, the unpredictable responses of distinct algal species to cryopreservation agents and protocols have hampered the standardization of universal methods so far. The results presented in this study indicate that intrinsic biological factors (i.e.: cell morphology and phylogenetic origin) play a role in the definition of which culture age and cryoprotectant agent type and concentration should be used to achieve successful cryopreservation. Through the use of Central Composite Rotatable Design (CCRD) it was possible to define optimized protocols for cryopreserving three...

Diversity of galling arthropods and host plants in a subtropical forest of Porto Alegre, southern Brazil Neotropical Entomology
Dalbem,Ricardo V.; Mendonça Jr.,Milton de S..
Many hypotheses have been proposed to explain diversity patterns of galling insects. However, there are contradictory evidences on the evolutionary and ecological factors responsible for the trends. Furthermore, questions such as arthropod seasonality, sampling sufficiency and sampling team experience have been almost ignored. This study records galling arthropod diversity while paying attention to these questions. Seasonal sampling of galling arthropods and host plants were conducted in a humid subtropical forest of southern Brazil. Four transects were sampled twice per season, with two persons searching the vegetation for galls during 1h30min. After 96h.persons of sampling, 130 gall morphotypes on 84 species of host plants were recorded. An analysis of...

Gall-inducing insects of deciduous and semideciduous forests in Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Goetz,Ana Paula M.; Luz,Fernando A.; Toma,Tiago S. P.; Mendonça Jr,Milton de S..
ABSTRACT Galls are specific changes induced by insects on plant organs mainly through increases in plant cell number and/or size. Gall diversity is easy to recognize in the field because gallers are mostly species-specific, and thus each gall morphotype can be a proxy for a galling species. Insect galls are virtually unknown in Seasonal Deciduous and Semi-Deciduous forests of southern Brazil. Here, galls and host plants were surveyed between 2015 and 2017 in four forest fragments of Rio Grande do Sul State in these two vegetation types, in secondary-growth and areas under restoration. We recorded 89 gall morphotypes, with gallers belonging to Lepidoptera and Diptera, with the latter represented mainly by Cecidomyiidae. Galls were associated to 46 plant...

Identification of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi in plantain producing municipalities in department of Cordoba, Colombia Acta Agron. (Palmira)
Cabrales-Herrera,Eliecer Miguel; Barrera-Violeth,José Luis; Novoa-Yanez,Rafael.
Abstract Currently plantain cultivation makes excessive use of agrochemicals, condition that threatens a sustainable production system and leads to the degradation of the environment, reducing the quality of the products. Based on the foregoing, and in order to expand knowledge of the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi associated with plantain cultivation, the aim of this study was to isolate and identify fungal morphotypes that form symbiosis with plantain (Musa AAB Simmonds cv. Hartón), in farms from seven municipalities of the department of Córdoba, Colombia. In each farm, soil samples from the first 20 cm of soil depth in the rhizosphere area were taken to the soil laboratory at Universidad de Córdoba, Colombia, where spores were extracted using the OHM and...

Indirect and expedite assessment of Ilex paraguariensis commercial yield. Repositório Alice
WENDLING, I.; STURION, J. A.; REIS, C. F.; STUEPP, C. A.; PEÑA PEÑA, M. L..

Masquerade, mimicry and crypsis of the polymorphic sea anemone Phyllodiscus semoni and its aggregations in South Sulawesi Naturalis
Hoeksema, B.; Crowther, A.L..
Phyllodiscus semoni is a morphologically variable sea anemone species from the Indo-Pacific with morphotypes ranging from upright and branched to low-lying and rounded. The apparent camouflage strategies of this sea anemone allow it to resemble other species or objects in its environment, such as stony corals, soft corals, seaweeds, or rocky boulders covered by algae, which may help it to avoid recognition by potential predators. Occasionally, it occurs in aggregations that may result from asexual reproduction. A high level of intraspecific morphological variation, including co-occurring aggregations of three different morphotypes, was observed in the Spermonde Archipelago off Makassar, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. The co-occurrence of aggregations with...

Morphological diversity of springtails (Hexapoda: Collembola) as soil quality bioindicators in land use systems Biota Neotropica
Machado,Julia da Silva; Oliveira Filho,Luís Carlos Iuñes; Santos,Julio Cesar Pires; Paulino,Alexandre Tadeu; Baretta,Dilmar.
Abstract: The aim of this work was to evaluate the soil quality of native forest, eucalyptus plantations, pasture, integrated crop-livestock, and no-tillage systems, correlating the morphological diversity of springtails with physical and chemical soil properties. Springtail samples were captured from soils of the southern plateau of the State of Santa Catarina in Brazil, during winter and summer, by using Pitfall traps, using a 3 × 3 point grid. The morphotyping of springtails consisted of the observation of five traits and for each one a partial value of the eco-morphological index was assigned to obtain the modified Soil Quality Index. A correlation of the morphotype abundance and diversity with physical (soil moisture, bulk density, biopores,...

The cephalic lateral line system of temperate perches (Perciformes: Percichthyidae) from Argentinean Patagonia Rev. Bras. Zool.
Vega,Rocío M.; Viozzi,Gustavo P..
ABSTRACT The species of Percichthys (Percichthyidae) are endemic to southern South America. Some authors have pointed out that the genus includes four valid species, based on the morphology of the head, jaws, and fins. A phylogenetic analysis published by other authors suggests that three of them are morphotypes belonging to the same species, Percichthys trucha (Valenciennes, 1833). The aim of this study is to describe for the first time the morphology of the cephalic seismosensory system of Patagonian perches, and how these characters vary in the three morphotypes, in order to provide morphological elements to analyze the taxonomy of these fish species. Comparisons of the cephalic seismosensory system between juveniles and adults were also conducted....
