Behavioral responses of Spodoptera littoralis males to sex pheromone components and virgin females in wind tunnel Inra

The major component of the sex pheromone of female Spodoptera littoralis, (Z,E)-9,11-tetradecadienyl acetate (1), elicited all steps of the male behavioral sequence, i.e., wing fanning and taking flight, oriented upwind flight and arrival to the middle of the tunnel, close approach and contact with the source. The activity was equivalent to that elicited by virgin females. In the range of doses tested, the dosage of 1 had no significant effect on the number of source contacts. Male response was significantly affected by light intensity, being optimum at 3 lux. Background: Carboxyl/cholinesterases (CCEs) are highly diversified in insects. These enzymes have a broad range of proposed functions, in neuro/developmental processes, dietary detoxification, insecticide resistance or hormone/ pheromone degradation. As few functional data are available on purified or recombinant CCEs, the physiological role of most of these enzymes is unknown. Concerning their role in olfaction, only two CCEs able to metabolize sex pheromones have been functionally characterized in insects. These enzymes are only expressed in the male antennae, and secreted into the lumen of the pheromone-sensitive sensilla. In insects, biogenic amines have been shown to play an important role in olfactory plasticity. In a first attempt to decipher the underlying molecular mechanisms, we report the molecular cloning and precise expression pattern of a newly identified octopamine/tyramine-receptor-encoding gene in the antennae of the noctuid moth Mamestra brassicae (MbraOAR/TAR). A full-length cDNA has been obtained through homology cloning in combination with rapid amplification of cDNA ends/polymerase chain reaction; the deduced protein exhibits high identities with previously identified octopamine/tyramine receptors in other moths. Cloning of an octopamine/tyramine receptor and plasticity of its expression as a function of adult sexual maturation in the male moth Agrotis ipsilon Inra

In the male moth Agrotis ipsilon behavioural response and antennal lobe (AL) neuron sensitivity to the female-produced sex pheromone increase with age and juvenile hormone (JH) level. We recently showed that the neuromodulator, octopamine (OA), interacts with JH in this age-dependent olfactory plasticity. To further elucidate its role, we cloned a full cDNA encoding a protein that presents biochemical features essential to OA/tyramine receptor (AipsOAR/TAR) function. Differences in sex pheromone communication systems of closely related species : Spodoptera latifascia (Walker) and S. descoinsi Lalanne-Cassou and Silvain (Lepidoptera : Noctuidae) Inra

S. latifascia and S. descoinsi are closely related species that occur sympatrically over limited areas in French Guiana. We examined allopatric populations, S. latifascia originating from Barbados and S. descoinsi from French Guiana. Studies on nocturnal activity cycles showed temporal partitioning of female calling behavior, male sexual activity, and mating behavior.S. descoinsi were sexually active in the first half of the scotophase whereas S. latifascia were sexually active in the second half. Durant plus d’une année, l’étude régulière des niveaux de population et des dégâts sur maïs de deux noctuelles des Antilles françaises, Spodoptera frugiperda Abbot & Smith et Heliothis zea Boddie a été réalisée. Elle a permis de préciser la dynamique des populations larvaires, la sensibilité aux attaques des différents stades phénologiques de la plante-hôte, l’importance, d’ailleurs très faible, du parasitisme larvaire et de mettre en évidence des différences notables au niveau de la résistance variétale aux deux ravageurs.

The recent assembly of the silkworm Bombyx mori genome with 432 Mb on 28 holocentric chromosomes has become a reference in the genomic analysis of the very diverse Order of Lepidoptera. We sequenced BACs from two major pests, the noctuid moths Helicoverpa armigera and Spodoptera frugiperda, corresponding to 15 regions distributed on 11 B. mori chromosomes, each BAC/region being anchored by known orthologous gene(s) to analyze syntenic relationships and genome rearrangements among the three species. L’hibernation de Sesamia nonagrioides Lef. est étudiée dans une population se développant à la limite septentrionale de l’aire de l’espèce. Une technique de réactivation périodique des larves en repos permet de montrer que la durée des phases préliminaires de la diapause est très courte et que, dès la fin du mois de septembre, les délais de réactivation décroissent. Ceux-ci ne se stabilisent cependant qu’au mois de mars suivant. A une température donnée, les délais sont plus courts pour la photopériode la plus longue. Cette photosensibilité disparaît en mars. Identification of hairpencil secretion from male Mamestra brassicae (L.) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) and electroantennogram studies Inra

Extracts of male Mamestra brassicae (L.) hairpencils were analyzed by capillary gas chromatography (GC) and by GC-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The extracts were found to consist of six components. Benzaldehyde, 2-methylpropanoic acid, 2-methylbutanoic acid, and phenol were present in the extracts as well as the previously identified benzyl alcohol and phenyl ethanol. The two major components were 2-phenylethanol and 2-methylbutanoic acid. They represented, respectively, 74% and 12.5% of the total blend in 3-day-old male extracts. Identification of the sex Pheromone of Sesamia cretica Lederer Inra

By using solid phase micro-extraction and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analyses, a sex pheromone blend for the stem borer, Sesamia cretica Lederer (Lepidoptera, Noctuidae), was identified as consisting of (Z)-9-tetradecen-1-ol (80%), (Z)-9-tetradecen-1-yl acetate (10%), and (Z)-11-hexadecen-1-ol (10%). The first two components had previously been discovered as attractants for S. cretica in field tests, but had not been identified in the female's sex pheromone gland. A field-trapping trial showed that the three-component blend gave the highest catches of male S. cretica. La bisabolangélone, extraite des graines d’Angelica silvestris L., est un puissant antiappétant contre différents insectes oligophages. Des chenilles de Mythimna unipuncta ont été élevées sur des feuilles de maïs traitées avec des solutions de bisabolangélone à des concentrations diminuant sensiblement la prise alimentaire. Les traitements continus réduisent la prise alimentaire, ralentissent la croissance, empêchent la constitution de réserves importantes chez les chenilles et abaissent le poids des chrysalides. Une concentration de 1 000 ppm provoque une forte mortalité larvaire, une grave crise pendant la métamorphose et entraîne la quasi-extinction de la population.
