Actividad antihelmíntica in vitro de extracto acuoso de hojas y semillas de Neem (Azadirachta indica A. Juss). I. Inhibición de la eclosión de huevos y del desarrollo larvario Rev Salud Anim.

Con el objetivo de evaluar la actividad antihelmíntica in vitro de extractos acuosos de hojas y semillas de Neem (A. indica) se diseñó un experimento que estudió el efecto de la adición del extracto acuoso en la eclosión de huevecillos y el desarrollo larvario de estrongílidos gastrointestinales. Se prepararon tres concentraciones de extractos acuosos (500, 250 y 125 mg/ml) a partir de hojas y semillas secadas a la sombra. Se realizó una prueba in vitro de eclosión de huevecillos y otra de inhibición del desarrollo larvario. El extracto de semilla fue más efectivo pues en dosis de 500 mg/ml logró reducir la eclosión de huevecillos en un 99.1% sin diferencias significativas (p<0.01) con el Albendazol y en un 88.8% el desarrollo de las larvas hacia L3....

Acute toxicity of azadirachtin to a teleost, Heteropneustes fossilis - doi: 10.4025/actascibiolsci.v34i2.9455 Biological Sciences

The acute static renewal test of a botanical pesticide - azadirachtin for the freshwater catfish, Heteropneustes fossilis has been performed to determine the LC50 values at different exposure period. The LC50 values at various exposure periods are 173.06 mg L-1 for 24h; 80.69 mg L-1 for 48h; 58.57 mg L-1 for 72h and 52.35 mg L-1 for 96h. The upper confidence limits were 196.87, 86.91, 79.20 and 70.04 mg L-1 for 24, 48, 72 and 96 h and lower confidence limits were 154.01, 74.24, 37.33 and 33.83 mg L-1, respectively. These results indicate that azadirachtin exposure to the fish caused toxic effects.

Algicidal effects of aqueous leaf extracts of neem (Azadirachta indica) on Scenedesmus quadricauda (Turp.) de Brébission Acta Botanica

The application of synthetic algaecides for the control of algae produces by-products that are sometimes toxic to the environment. There is a need for natural and cheap alternatives to synthetic algaecides. In the present study, we investigated the potential of aqueous crude extract of Azadirachta indica to inhibit the growth of Scenedesmus quadricauda. Phytochemical screening of the extract revealed the presence of groups of bioactive compounds that are capable of inhibiting microalgal growth. Chlorophyll a concentration, dry weight production and cell density of microalga decreased with increasing crude extract concentration. In order to assess the antifungal activity of methanolic extracts from neem tree (Azadirachta indica A. Juss.), several bioassays were conducted following M38-A2 broth microdilution method on 14 isolates of the dermatophytes Trichophytonmentagrophytes, Trichophyton rubrum, Microsporum canis and Epidermophyton floccosum. Neem extracts were obtained through methanol-hexane partitioning of mature green leaves and seed oil. Furthermore, high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analyses were carried out to relate the chemical profile with their content of terpenoids, ofwidely known antifungal activity. Avaliou-se a atividade inseticida de extratos aquosos e alcoólicos de várias partes de plantas de 13 espécies vegetais, exóticas e nativas da Amazônia brasileira, em adultos de Cerotoma tingomarianus. Os extratos foram testados em diferentes concentrações e modo de preparo, sendo pulverizados em plantas de feijão comum (Phaseolus vulgaris cv. Pérola). Os parâmetros avaliados foram efeito deterrente para alimentação e mortalidade. The use of cell and plant tissues culture techniques to produce economically important active metabolites has been growing. Among these substances, azadirachtin (AZA), produced by the neem tree (Azadirachta indica), has received considerable attention due to its bioinsecticide action. The main goal of this work was to analyze the AZA levels in neem cotyledonary calli. The calli were grown in agitated Woody Plant Medium (WPM) liquid medium, supplemented with glucose (Gl), hydrolyzed casein (HC) and methyl jasmonate (MeJ) as elicitor agent. ABSTRACT: The red mite Oligonychus yothersi is one of the main pests of yerba mate in Brazil The damage this mite causes leads to leaf drop and decreased production. There are no registered acaricides for use in yerba mate; thus, laboratory and field experiments were performed to evaluate the effect of azadirachtin (Azamax(r), 250mL 100L-1) for the control of the red mite in yerba mate. Effect of pre-plant treatments of yam (Dioscorea rotundata) setts on the production of healthy seed yam, seed yam storage and consecutive ware tuber production JARTS

Numerous pests and diseases of yams are perpetuated from season to season through the use of infected seed material. Developing a system for generating healthy seed material would disrupt this disease cycle and reduce losses in field and storage. The use of various pre-plant treatments was evaluated in field experiments carried out at three sites in Nigeria. Yam tubers of four preferred local cultivars were cut into 100 g setts and treated with pesticide (fungicide + insecticide mixture), neem extract (1 : 5 w/v), hot water (20 min at 53 °C) or wood ash (farmers practice) and compared with untreated setts. Eficácia do extrato aquoso de Azadiracta indica no controle de Boophilus microplus em bovino Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.

This study was carried out with two groups of bovines naturally infected with Boophilus microplus. One group was treated every week during a month with Neem's watery extract and the other group was treated only once (at the test onset) with amabectin pour-on. The results of the Kruskal-Wallis test showed no significant difference (P<0.0001) between both groups (Neem and amabectin) throughout the experiment. However, time of collection [(day0 = day15) <FONT FACE=Symbol>¹</FONT> day30] and age brackets (cows<heifers) showed significant effect. Neem’s watery extract was cheap and easy to prepare, even at farm and could replace amabectin in the control of Boophilus microplus in bovines.

Plant extracts have been studied as a promising source of natural insecticides. This study assessed the effect of the ethanol extract of Cymbopogon winterianus Jowitt (citronella grass) in comparison with an insecticide containing azadirachtin (ICA) on mortality and number of eggs of Tetranychus urticae Koch (Acari: Tetranychidae) in laboratory conditions. For the tests, the mites were sprayed with the aid of a Potter spray tower. To assess the mortality of females, LC50 value for extract of citronella grass and ICA was, respectively, 2.63 and 2.83%. La actividad antifúngica de seis extractos vegetales fue evaluada in vitro e in vivo para controlar la antracnosis postcosecha en papaya. Extractos de ajo (Allium sativum) (concentraciones de 10 y 15 %) y canela (Cinnamomum zeylanicum) (0,0050; 0,0100; 0,0150 %) suprimieron el crecimiento micelial (100 %), inhibieron la germinación (100 %) y la esporulación del hongo (100 %). El extracto de canela a dosis de 0,0054 % aplicada antes y al momento de la inoculación con C. gloeosporioides fue la dosis óptima para el control de la severidad (canela 97.22% de efectividad respecto al testigo absoluto) de la antracnosis en frutos de papaya artificialmente inoculados, a mayores dosis la severidad aumentó. Growth disruption, abnormalities and mortality of Spodoptera littoralis (Boisduval) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) caused by Azadirachtin Neotropical Entomology

Azadirachtin is the most effective compound of the neem tree, Azadirachta indica A. Juss, with insecticidal and growth disruption properties on several species of insects. Its effects on the development and survival of Spodoptora littoralis (Boisduval) were studied under laboratory conditions. Third-instar larvae were individually fed on artificial diet treated with azadirachtin (from 0.01 ppm to 1 ppm wt/v), for two days, and transferred to plain diet. To optimize nursery practices for efficient plant production procedures and to keep up to the ever growing demand of seedlings, identification of the most suitable species of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), specific for a given tree species, is clearly a necessary task. Sixty days old seedlings of Neem (Azadirachta indica A. Juss) raised in root trainers were inoculated with six species of AMF and a mixed inoculum (consortia) and kept in green house. Side-effects of pesticides used in the organic system of production on Apis mellifera Linnaeus, 1758 BABT

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of pesticides, used in the organic system, on Apis mellifera under laboratory conditions. Four multiple (0.25x, 0.5x, 1x and 2x) concentrations as recommended by they manufacturers of the following products: Rotenat CE®, Pironat®, Biopirol 7M®, Organic neem®, Natuneem® and lime sulfur were tested by topical application and ingestion. Of all the products and concentrations tested, only the lime sulfur (5000 ml 100L-1 and 10000 mL 100L-1 of water) by ingestion, and Rotenat CE® (1200ml 100L-1 of water) on topical application were considered slightly harmful for A. mellifera, as the classification of IOBC/WPRS for the laboratory tests.

Soil amendment with chopped or ground dry leaves of six species of plants for the control of Meloidogyne javanica in tomato under greenhouse conditions Ciência Rural

Greenhouse experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of soil amendment with chopped (1cm²) or ground (1mm sieve) dry leaves of assa-peixe (Vernonia polyanthes), lemon-grass (Cymbopogon citratus), eucalyptus (Eucalyptus citriodora), castor (Ricinus communis), mango (Mangifera indica) or neem (Azadirachta indica) for the control Meloidogyne javanica. Into the soil (Yellow red oxisol) of each pot were added leaves (5g kg-1 of soil) and 5,000 eggs of the nematode. After seven days, one tomato seedling "Santa Cruz Kada" was transplanted to each pot. The neem tree, Azadirachta indica, is a plant that can potentially control insects with the advantage of being food and environmental safe.
