Application of response surface methodology to study the biological removal of nitrogen from effluent of cattle slaughterhouse in a sequencing batch reactor REA

The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) on biological removal of nitrogen from cattle slaughterhouse wastewater by nitrification/denitrification processes. The effects of initial concentration of ammoniacal nitrogen were investigated at 100; 150 and 200 mg L-1 and air flow rate at 0.125; 0.375 and 0.625 L min¹ Lreactor-1 on the nitrogen compounds removal, by a Central Composite Rotational Design (CCRD) configuration. There were variations from 9.2 to 94.9%, 4.0 to 19.6% and 20.8 to 92.0% in the conversion of ammoniacal nitrogen to nitrate and nitrite concentration and removal of total nitrogen, respectively. Bacterial nitrification and denitrification were studied in the sediments of the Bassin d'Arcachon, a macrotidallagoon located in the Southwestern Atlantic French coast colonized by extensive Zostera noltii  meadows. Nitrifiers were enumerated by MPN method. Densities were law : from 102 to 104 bacteria per ml of sediment presenting an increase during winter. Nitrifying activities were measured by NH4+  accumulation N-serve block technique. Activities were ranged from 0 to 90 µmol m-2 h-1 and nitrification represented 120-140 mmol m-2 yr-1 for intertidal sediments. Em sistemas com semeadura direta, a calagem tem sido aplicada superficialmente, causando excesso de calcário nos primeiros centímetros do perfil do solo, onde também é aplicado o N em cobertura e a densidade de comprimento radicular é alta. O objetivo deste trabalho foi estudar a dinâmica do N e do pH do solo em razão da calagem em superfície e aplicação de N em cobertura, na presença de palha. ABSTRACT This study aimed to evaluate a structured bed reactor with intermittent aeration in the simultaneous removal of Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) and Total Nitrogen (TN) from sanitary sewage. The reactor was operated for 339 days with a Hydraulic Retention Time (HRT) of 12 hours, temperature of 30 ± 1°C and continuous feeding. Nine trials were carried out in which three different effluent recirculation flow (Qr), 3, 2 and 1 time the incoming flow, were evaluated in three different aeration times, of 1h, 2h, and 3h, in 3 hour cycles. The results showed that different recirculation flows and aeration times did not influence the removal of COD, which reached 89%±12. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of airflow (0.25, 0.50 and 0.75 L.L-1.min-1) and cycle time (10.45 h, 14.25 h and 17.35 h) on a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) performance in promoting nitrification and denitrification of poultry slaughterhouse wastewater. The operational stages included feeding, aerobic and anoxic reactions, sedimentation and discharge. SBR was operated in a laboratory scale with a working volume of 4 L, keeping 25% of biomass retained inside the reactor as inoculum for the next batch. Elevation and vegetation influences on soil properties in Chilean Nothofagus forests RChHN

We measured net nitrogen mineralization, net nitrification, proportional nitrification, and total inorganic nitrogen, available phosphorus, and soil organic carbon in five Andean forested stands in an attempt to resolve the relative influence of elevation and forest canopy composition on soil organic matter and nutrient dynamics in this ecosystem type. Our five forested study sites were within a contiguous Nothofagus forest that ranged from 1,280 to 1,700 m elevation in the central Chilean Andes. The semi-arid region of Chiapas is dominated by N2 -fixing shrubs, e.g., Acacia angustissima. Urea-fertilized soil samples under maize were collected from areas covered and uncovered by A. angustissima in different seasons and N2O and CO2 emissions were monitored. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of urea and of the rainy and dry season on gas emissions from semi-arid soil under laboratory conditions. Urea and soil use had no effect on CO2 production. Nitrons oxide emission from soil was three times higher in the dry than in the rainy season, while urea fertilization doubled emissions. Prawns (Panaeus japonicus) were rearing during more than nine months in experimental closed circuit tanks. In such systems the nitrite appearance is related to the normal nitrification process and to oxygen deficiency. Above a given level, nitrite causes the death of prawns. The soluble oxygen concentration and, thus, nitrite level in the water appears as the main factor for a successful development of prawns in closed circuit tanks. In these conditions, the growth rate of the prawns is relatively low (9g/per individual in seven months). Never theless, such a system allows a load of some 600 g prawns per m2.

El objetivo de este trabajo fue evaluar la influencia de la fertilización mineral nitrogenada, después de la poda del cafeto robusta, sobre la productividad del cultivo y algunos indicadores químicos (pH, materia orgánica) y microbiológicos (respiración biológica y nitrificación) de dos Cambisoles en Tercer Frente, Santiago de Cuba y La Alcarraza, Holguín, durante los años 2003?2007. Se estudió la respuesta a dosis crecientes de nitrógeno (0 hasta 400 kg ha-1), en presencia de un fondo fijo de P (50 kg ha-1) y K (160 kg ha-1), en un diseño experimental de bloques al azar, con cuatro réplicas. Indicators of soil quality associated with N-cycling were assessed under different land-use systems (native forest ? NAT, reforestation with Araucaria angustifolia or Pinus taeda and agricultural use ? AGR) to appraise the effects on the soil potential for N supply.
