This research work involves the design and fabrication of Irvingia nut cracking machines. It operates using impact technique which involves collision between the seednut and stationary wall. The procedures employed the design stage, fabrication and testing. The machine components are: impact drum, shaft, impeller (rotor), electric motor, driver and driven pulley and hopper. The cracking chamber consists of the impeller and impact drum. The seednuts were pre-treated before testing by sun-drying to improve its crackability. The machine gave a better performance at the speed of 2600 revolution per minute with average cracking efficiency, percentage kernel breakage and capacity of 88%, 17.5% and 916 nuts/hr. The kernel of the cutia nut (castanha-de-cutia, Couepia edulis (Prance) Prance) of the western Amazon, which is consumed by the local population, has traditionally been extracted from the nut with a machete, a dangerous procedure that only produces kernels cut in half. A shelling off machine prototype, which produces whole kernels without serious risks to its operator, is described and tested. The machine makes a circular cut in the central part of the fruit shell, perpendicular to its main axis. Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar a divergência genética entre 23 genótipos de castanheira-do-gurgueia, com base em características físicas e químico-nutricionais do fruto. Os frutos foram coletados em áreas de ocorrência natural da espécie no cerrado do sudoeste piauiense. As características físicas analisadas foram: (a) fruto - massa média (MMF); comprimento (CF); largura (LF); espessura (EF), e massa média do pericarpo (MMP); e (b) castanha - massa média (MMC); comprimento (CC); largura (LC), e espessura (EC). Genetic variability in physic nuts cultivated in Northeastern Brazil. Repositório Alice

This research had as objective to characterize genetically individuals of physic nut cultivated in experimental areas in Sergipe, Brazil by means of RAPD molecular markers. Leaves of 40 individuals were collected and DNA was isolated using CTAB 2% method. Were used 30 primers RAPD for DNA amplification, and this data was used to estimate the genetic similarity among the pairs of individuals, using Jaccard coefficient, and group them out for the UPGMA method. Also, the genetic structure and diversity of the populations were assessed using AMOVA. Of the 100 fragments generated, 29 of were polymorphic. The castanheira-do-gurguéia is a native fruit tree with great regional importance, whose almond present pleasant flavor and exploration still limited. The objective of this research was to evaluate the physical and chemical-nutritional characteristics of 23 castanheira-do-gurguéia genotypes from natural occurrence areas of Piauí State southwestern savannah.
