The taxonomic composition and diversity of assemblages of Ephemeroptera nymphs of four lotic environments in the central region of State of Rio Grande do Sul, a subtropical area in southern Brazil, were evaluated. Samplings were done monthly, with a Surber sampler, from June 2001 to May 2002, in the Jacuí River and three of its tributaries. The total number of nymphs collected in the four sampling sites was 11,007 in five families and 19 genera, of these, 11 are new records for the State. The highest diversity occurred in Point 4 (H'=2.41) and the lowest in Point 2 (H'=1.69). Point 4 had the highest environmental stability, conservation of the riparian vegetation and the lowest anthropic impact, while Point 2 presented a large environmental simplification... |

The goal of this study was to investigate the effect of temperature on the life cycle of Acanthagrion nymphs sampled in a stream in the southern state of Amazonas. Altogether, 50 nymphs (10 in each of the five treatments) with ambient temperatures of 16, 20, 24, 28 and 32°C and water temperatures of 18, 22, 26, 30 and 34oC, respectively, were used. The only treatment that had a hatching adult was at a temperature of 28oC, identified in a single species, Acanthagrion apicale. In all other treatments (16, 20, 24 and 32oC), all nymphs died, respectively 1, 1, 3 and 2 days. We conclude from the results of this study that controlling water temperature near 28°C was the most efficient for obtaining adult A. apicale, and that this temperature was close to the... |

Insecticide application is the main way to control Diaphorina citri. However, it causes environmental contamination, has a negative impact on beneficial organisms, and leads to psyllid resistance. The essential oil of Piper aduncum has low toxicity towards the environment and contains dillapiol, which was proven to be effective against several crop pests. Here, we studied its efficacy against nymphs and adults of D. citri under laboratory conditions. Oils with three concentrations of dillapiol (65.2%, 76.6%, and 81.6%) at 0.5%, 0.75%, and 1.0% dilutions plus 0.025% adjuvant were tested. All treatments caused 90?100% mortality in nymphs. Topical treatments with oil containing 76.6% and 81.6% of dillapiol at 0.75% and 1% dilutions were effective (mortality... |

The spittlebugs cause symptoms such as yellowing of leaves, forage accumulation reduction and consequently, stocking rate decreasing. One alternative is the use of forage breeding to find genotypes that are less suitable for spittlebugs development and survival. Focus on that, Embrapa released BRS RB331 Ipyporã, hybrid of Brachiaria spp. that has spittlebugs antibiosis. The objective was to evaluate forage production and spittlebugs population (Mahanarva sp.) in two hybrids of Brachiaria: Ipyporã and Mulato II. The experiment was carried out at Embrapa Agrossilvipastoril, from June/2016 to February/2017, in randomized complete blocks with two treatments (hybrids) and four replications. The experimental area were divided into 8 paddocks with 1.5 ha each,... |

The stonefly (Pleeoptera) nymphs of streams of the Almas River basin, Pirenópolis, Goiás State, Central Brazil, and some abiotie factors that might affect their temporal distribution were studied. Nymphs were sampled monthly (June 1993 to July 1994) in five stations with a Surber sampler, and each sample consisted of 20 units totalling 2 m². In each station, stream velocity, discharge, temperature, electrical conductivity and pH were measured in order to assess their influence on the density of nymphs. Nymphs were identified to genus level. In general, the annual variation in density of nymphs, in four stations, showed that the seasonal variation was not clearly influenced by the annual rain cycle. In the case of the one of the stations, where numbers of... |

The Asian citrus psyllid Diaphorina citri Kuwayama (Hemiptera: Liviidae) is one of the main pests of world citriculture, since it is a vector of the phloem-limited bacteria Candidatus Liberibacter spp. associated with huanglongbing (HLB). For this reason, the population control of D. citri with widespectrum insecticides has been one of the main tools used by growers to reduce the psyllid population and the disease spread in the citrus groves. Despite the high efficacy, the overuse of insecticides can affect the effectiveness of natural enemies [especially Tamarixia radiata (Waterston) (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae), a nymphal ectoparasitoid of D. citri, and favor the process of selection of resistant population to the insecticides, target-pest resurgence and... |
