A Single High Dose of Chlorpyrifos Reduces Long-Term Basal C-Fos Expression in the Rat Arcuate Hypothalamic Nucleus International Journal of Morphology
Carvajal,F; Lerma-Cabrera,J. M; Sánchez-Amate,M. C; Cubero,I.
Chlorpyrifos (CPF) is an organophosphate compound used worldwide as a pesticide in agriculture that, after subcutaneous injection, keeps acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity inhibited within an organism for months. Ample clinical and experimental evidence shows that CPF exposure induces relevant and persistent neurobehavioral deficits in humans and animals, even after one single episode/injection. Additionally, clinical and epidemiological studies evidence that a significant percentage (60%) of Gulf War veterans as well as agricultural workers suffering from acute OP intoxication may have developed intolerance to nicotine and ethanol-containing beverages. Consistent with it, administration of a single high dose of CPF to adult Wistar rats elicited...

Vudriko, Patric; Okwee-Acai, James; Tayebwa, Dickson Stuart; Byaruhanga, Joseph; Kakooza, Steven; Wampande, Edward; Omara, Robert; Muhindo, Jeanne Bukeka; Tweyongyere, Robert; Owiny, David Okello; Hatta, Takeshi; Tsuji, Naotoshi; Umemiya-Shirafuji, Rika; Xuan, Xuenan; Kanameda, Masaharu; Fujisaki, Kozo; Suzuki, Hiroshi.
Background: Acaricide failure has been on the rise in the western and central cattle corridor of Uganda. In this study, we identified the tick species associated with acaricide failure and determined their susceptibility to various acaricide molecules used for tick control in Uganda. Methods: In this cross sectional study, tick samples were collected and identified to species level from 54 purposively selected farms (from 17 districts) that mostly had a history of acaricide failure. Larval packet test was used to screen 31 tick populations from 30 farms for susceptibility at discriminating dose (DD) and 2 x DD of five panels of commercial acaricide molecules belonging to the following classes; amidine, synthetic pyrethroid (SP), organophosphate (OP) and...

Liver histopathology of the fish brachydanio rerio hamilton-buchman after acute exposure to sublethal levels of the organophosphate dimethoate 500 Zoologia
Rodrigues,Edson de Lara; Fanta,Edith.
Among the new substances that were synthesised by the chemical industiy during the last decades, with the aim to improve human prosperity, some cause negative effects on non target organisms like fish. Among the pesticides, the organophosphates (OP) are widely used in cattle management, agriculture and aquaculture activities. Brachydanio rerio Hamilton-Buchman, 1822 is used world-wide in fish-tests for the establishment of the lethal levels of pesticides. Nevertheless, these fish show morphological changes in their hepatocytes when exposed experimentally for 24 hours to the sublethal dose of 0.025 µl/l of the OP Dimethoate 500, in acute tests. Right hours after exposure, a high density of cells with cytoplasmic granulation is seen as well as focal...

NEUROTOXIC POTENTIAL OF TRICHLORFON TO MULTIPLE SUBLETHAL DOSES IN WISTAR RATS Acta biol.Colomb.
TAPIERO HERNÁNDEZ,YACSON; RONDÓN BARRAGÁN,IANG; CÉSPEDES RUBIO,ANGEL.
The organophosphates used for pest control induce sensory, motor and psychiatric disturbances after chronic exposure. The ester type is the cause of the intermediate syndrome and delayed neuropathy, in which the white and gray matter in the brain are severely affected. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of multiple sublethal doses of Trichlorfon on neurons, astrocytes and myelinated tissue in a rat model of brain neurotoxicity. Trichlorfon (metrifonate) was administered to adult Wistar rats at doses of 11 or 22 μg/kg by oral gavage every seven days for four or eight weeks (four experimental groups) and a control group (placebo). One week after the last dose, animals were euthanized and the brains perfused, removed and cut into coronal...

Organophosphorous Pesticides: Their Effects on Biosentinel Species and Humans. Control and Application in Chile International Journal of Morphology
Espinoza-Navarro,Omar; Ponce-LaRosa,Carlos; Bustos-Obregón,Eduardo.
The environment is negatively affected by the increasing accumulation of both natural and man-made waste and by-products. Organophosphorous pesticides -malathion, diazinon and methamidophos- are used worldwide in pest control. The aim of this report is to review the effects of organophosphates on the male reproductive tract of mice, rats and earthworms, and to evaluate their projection into the human population. Assessing failures in the male reproductive system is an excellent in vivo biomarker to determine the level of toxicity of suspected pollutants. In rodents organophosphates cause decreased testicular weight and sperm density, abnormal tubular plugging and increased teratozoospermia. In earthworms they cause a significant decrease in body weight and...

POTENTIAL FARM-LEVEL IMPACTS OF PROPOSED FQPA IMPLEMENTATION: THE TENNESSEE CASE AgEcon
Ray, Daryll E.; Slinsky, Stephen P.; Torre Ugarte, Daniel de la; Tiller, Kelly.
This research estimates farm-level impacts of a potential ban on organophosphates and carbamates under the FQPA. Insecticide expenditure and first- and fifth-year yield impacts are estimated for five Tennessee representative farms. Results indicate that within five years, the ban could reduce net farm income on Tennessee farms by 16 to 46 percent.

Protective Effect of Melatonin on Damage in the Sperm Parameters of Mice Exposed to Diazinon International Journal of Morphology
Sarabia,L; Espinoza-Navarro,O; Maurer,I; Ponce,C; Bustos-Obregón,E.
Since normal sperm parameters can be altered by organophosphorous pesticides, this study intended to determine if melatonin is able to prevent the damage on sperm quality after an acute exposure to diazinon. Adult male mice were injected intraperitoneally with melatonin, diazinon (1/3 or 2/3 LD50) or both, and sperm parameters were evaluated on days 1 or 32 post injection. Groups treated with diazinon showed elevated lipid peroxidation levels on day 1 post treatment, while groups pretreated with melatonin before diazinon showed no difference compared to control. Sperm count showed a significant decrease in both diazinon-treated groups only on day 32 post injection; no differences were observed in groups pretreated with melatonin prior to diazinon compared...

Relation of Breast Cancer and Malathion Aerial Spraying in Arica, Chile International Journal of Morphology
Cabello,Gertrudis; Valenzuela-Estrada,Mario; Siques,Patricia; Brito,Julio; Parra,Eduardo; Valdivia,Ursula; Lavin,Claudia; Manríquez,Alejandra; Ortega,Alejandro.
Breast cancer mortality has been increasing in Arica Chile where it has surpassed the national rates 11 times between 1990 and 2010. The city of Arica was sprayed with the organophosphrous pesticide malathion in order to control the Mediterranean fly 33 years ago. Moreover we have demonstrated that a malathion treatment induces the formation of breast carcinomas in Sprague Dowley female rats. The objective of this work was to find a relationship between malathion aerial spraying and the increased mortality rate due to breast cancer that has been observed in Arica in recent years. We extracted city data bases with all breast cancer cases diagnosed from 1995 to 2005 from the Dr. Juan Noe Crevani Hospital of Arica city and Ernesto Torres Hospital of Iquique....
