Effects of fluctuating moisture and temperature regimes on the persistence of quiescent conidia of Isaria fumosorosea Inra
Bouamama, N.; Vidal, C.; Fargues, J..
Conidia of Isaria fumosorosea were submitted to three regimes of temperature and moisture to simulate microclimatic conditions which prevail in temperate (43% RH and 28 degrees C to 98% RH and 15 degrees C), subtropical (75% RH and 35 degrees C to 98% RH and 25 degrees C), and arid areas (13% RH and 40 degrees C to 33% RH and 15 degrees C) with daily fluctuating cycles. Germination, conidial viability, and virulence to Spodoptera frugiperda larvae were less affected after 20 days exposure under temperate cycling conditions than under arid and subtropical conditions. Exposure of conidia for 20 days to constant nocturnal simulated conditions of any tested regime weakly affected conidial persistence, whereas diurnal conditions exerted the most detrimental...

Isolation and characterization of polymorphic microsatellites in Parnassius Apollo and Euphydryas aurinia (Lepidoptera) Inra
Petenian, F.; Meglécz, E.; Genson, G.; Rasplus, J.-Y.; Faure, E..
Microsatellite loci were developed from Parnassius Apollo and Euphydryas aurinia , two endangered Palaearctic butterfly species. Respectively, six and five polymorphic loci were characterized from an enriched partial genomic library. Genetic diversity range from three to 25 alleles for the first species and from seven to 21 for the second. Although the presence of null alleles is suspected, these polymorphic loci are likely to provide important information on the fine scale genetic structure among populations of these species

Linking bird, carabid beetle and butterfly life-history traits to habitat fragmentation in mosaic landscapes Inra
Barbaro, L.; Van Halder, I..
The goal of the present study is to assess how landscape configuration influenced the distribution of life-history traits across bird, carabid beetle and butterfly communities of mosaic forest landscapes in south-western France. A set of 12 traits was selected for each species, characterizing rarity, biogeographical distribution, body size, trophic guild, dispersal power, reproductive potential and phenology. We used a three-table ordination method, RLQ analysis, to link directly bird, beetle and butterfly traits to the same set of landscape metrics calculated in 400 m-radius buffers around sample points. RLQ analyses showed significant associations between life-history traits and landscape configuration for all three taxonomical groups. Threatened species...

Phylogenetics and biogeography of a spectacular old world radiation of butterflies: the subtribe Mycalesina (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae: Satyrini) Inra
Kodandaramaiah, U.; Lees, D.C.; Müller, C.J.; Torres, E.; Karanth, P.; Wahlberg, N..
BackgroundButterflies of the subtribe Mycalesina (Nymphalidae: Satyrinae) are important model organisms in ecology and evolution. This group has radiated spectacularly in the Old World tropics and presents an exciting opportunity to better understand processes of invertebrate rapid radiations. However, the generic-level taxonomy of the subtribe has been in a constant state of flux, and relationships among genera are unknown. There are six currently recognized genera in the group. Mycalesis, Lohora and Nirvanopsis are found in the Oriental region, the first of which is the most speciose genus among mycalesines, and extends into the Australasian region. Hallelesis and Bicyclus are found in mainland Africa, while Heteropsis is primarily Madagascan, with a few...
