Bioactivities of latexes from selected tropical plants Plantas Medicinales

Fifteen latexes from selected tropical plants were collected in Puerto Rico, Guadalupe and Ecuador and evaluated by 2 bioassays. The tests carried out were the brine shrimp lethality test (BSLT) and the DNA-methyl green (DNA-MG) interaction. An additional assay, antibacterial activity, was performed on the bark/latex extract of Mammea americana L. The results indicated that some of these latexes are bioactive. On the BSLT assay, the latexes of Euphorbia neriifolia L. and Sapium laurocerasus Desf. displayed LC50 values of 76,7 and 7,1 µg/mL, respectively. Moreover, the dichloromethane (DCM) fraction of the bark/latex of M. americana L., presented a LC50 1,1 mg/mL. Does forest liming impact the enzymatic profiles of ectomycorrhizal communities through specialized fungal symbionts ? Inra

Liming (Ca–Mg soil amendment) is a forestry practice used to correct soil acidification and restore health and productivity in declining stands. Liming is known to modify tree mineral nutrition beyond the sole Ca and Mg. We hypothesized that liming also modifies the very functioning of the tree absorbing system (that is the ectomycorrhizal fine roots) in a way that facilitates the mobilization of mineral nutrients, particularly those entrapped in soil organic matter. Five-group distribution of the shaker-like K+ channel family in higher plants Inra

In higher plants, potassium channels of the Shaker family have been shown to play crucial roles in the uptake of K+ from the soil solution and subsequent transport of this ion at the cell, tissue, and organ levels. In the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana, this family is composed of nine members, which are the best characterized among plant channels at the protein, gene, and functional property levels. Plant Shaker channels share a common structure: a hydrophobic core composed of six transmembrane segments, a long cytoplasmic C-terminal region harboring a putative cyclic nucleotide binding domain, and a KHA domain. Functional analysis and expression characteristics of chloroplastic Prx IIE Inra

Peroxiredoxins (Prxs) are ubiquitous thiol-dependent peroxidases capable of eliminating a variety of peroxides through reactive catalytic cysteines, which are regenerated by reducing systems. Based on amino acid sequences and their mode of catalysis, five groups of thiol peroxidases have been distinguished in plants, and type II Prx is one of them with representatives in many sub-cellular compartments. The mature form of poplar chloroplastic Prx IIE was expressed as a recombinant protein in Escherichia coli. The protein is able to reduce H2O2 and tert-butyl hydroperoxide and is regenerated by both glutaredoxin (Grx) and thioredoxin (Trx) systems. Potassium and sodium transport in non-animal cells: the Trk/Ktr/HKT transporter family Inra

Bacterial Trk and Ktr, fungal Trk and plant HKT form a family of membrane transporters permeable to K+ and/or Na+ and characterized by a common structure probably derived from an ancestral K+ channel subunit. This transporter family, specific of non-animal cells, displays a large diversity in terms of ionic permeability, affinity and energetic coupling (H+–K+ or Na+–K+ symport, K+ or Na+ uniport), which might reflect a high need for adaptation in organisms living in fluctuating or dilute environments. Simultaneous Production of Sphingolipids and Ethanol by Kluyveromyces thermotolerans OAK

Kluyveromyces thermotolerans strain NBRC 1674 was selected for the simultaneous production of sphingolipids and ethanol from beet molasses. The strain gradually synthesized ethanol with fermentation periods and attained a level slightly higher than that of the strain of Saccharomyces cerevisiae usually used for ethanol production. The sphingolipids accumulated in the cells were composed of almost equal amounts of free ceramides and glucosylceramides. The sphingoid bases and fatty acids of the two sphingolipids differed from each other and changed under aerobic and anaerobic growth conditions. Oxygen limitation may cause accumulation of sphinganine by inhibiting sphingolipid desaturases and enhance its proportion in both the sphingolipids.

Conifer needles are an important link in the cycling of Total Mercury (THg) and Methylmercury (MeHg) in the boreal ecosystem due to the high THg andMeHg concentrations in litterfall.Translocationwithin the tree ofHg fromsoils to the crowncanopy has been assumed to be a minor source of the Hg in litterfall. This paper, however, is the first to present direct observations of THg/MeHg transport from the soil via xylem sap. Xylem sap concentrations of THg and MeHg were measured in sap drained from different levels along the boles of freshly cut 100 year old Norway spruce (Picea abies) and Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris).
