Buyer-Supplier Relationships: An Investigation of Moderating Factors on the Development of Partnership Characteristics and Performance AgEcon
Duffy, Rachel; Fearne, Andrew.
The contemporary view of competitiveness and strategy is based on the foundation that customer value is created by firms working together for common aims and not created by firms working in isolation. Therefore there is increasing recognition that firms who engage in co-operative long-term partnerships, improve the operation of the supply chain as a whole for the mutual benefit of all parties involved. However researchers have suggested that the degree of partnership that develops between a buyer and a supplier, and the performance outcomes achieved, are likely to be moderated by firm, market or product characteristics. Therefore using data collected from a survey of UK fresh produce suppliers, this study investigates how differences, in terms of size,...

Decentralization and Access to Agricultural Extension Services in Kenya AgEcon
Nambiro, Elizabeth; Omiti, John M.; Mugunieri, Godiah Lawrence.
The form and content of decentralization has dominated development discourse and public sector reform agenda in Kenya in the last two decades. The case of agricultural extension service presents decentralization in a difficult context partly due to lack of information on its possible diverse impacts especially on resource poor farmers. This paper explores the effect of decentralization of agricultural extension on access, accountability and empowerment, and efficiency of delivering services to farmers. Secondary data, participatory research methods and primary data from a random sample of 250 farmers were used. Data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, multivariate analysis and logistic regression. The results show that there is improved access to...

Plant breeding in the turn of the millennium BABT
Borém,Aluízio; Milach,Sandra Cristina Kothe.
The transition from hunting and gathering to farming happened about 10,000 years ago, independently and diffusely in several places in the world. Plant breeders were responsible for genetic progress in a number of crop species. It included hybrids, the introgression of wild species genes and also the Green Revolution, which started in the 1960's with the cereals. The varieties developed by breeding, along with the use of new crop technology (fertilization, soil tillage, etc.) changed the status of some countries from importers to exporters of food. In the turn of the millennium,, plant breeding, faces new challenges in a globalized world, but it has new tools to deal with them. Notwithstanding the present contributions of plant breeding and crop...

The Research and Development Strategy AgEcon
Hyland, Paul W.; Clark, Richard A..
Continuous improvement and continuous innovation are used in the service and manufacturing industries, but there is little evidence of their use in the beef production sector. This paper examines the evidence relating to Continuous Innovation and Continuous Improvement and describes a collaborative partnership approach to its implementation in the beef industry. The results indicate that using a facilitated network of businesses can increase the uptake of innovations and improvements in beef businesses. Results also indicate that there is a need to develop facilitators so that they are aware of the impact of innovations and improvements on business profitability and so they can assist managers and business owners to implement short term changes to the...
