A Statistical Profile of the Pork Supply Chain AgEcon
Bonti-Ankomah, Samuel.
The agriculture and agri-food sector faces a number of challenges such as rapid technological change, increased competition and changes in consumer requirements. The sector therefore needs to adjust to keep up with the changes and become more competitive. This report provides information about the pork supply chain and highlights the structural changes that have occurred over time in the pork industry. The report uses tables, charts and figures to describe performance indicators and structural changes within the industry and shows that the Canadian pork supply chain is healthy, growing and export-oriented.

A UTILIZAÇÃO DE INDICADORES DE DESEMPENHO NÃO-FINANCEIROS EM ORGANIZAÇÕES AGROINDUSTRIAIS: UM ESTUDO EXPLORATÓRIO AgEcon
Leonardo Cunha Callado, Aldo; Andre Cunha Callado, Antonio; Araujo Almeida, Moises.
The decision making process in the agribusiness is the choice of the one option out of several alternative courses that is most suited to its interests. The aim of this article is to identify the structure and the relation patterns between the most important non-financial performance indicators among rural organizations from the State of Paraíba. To carry out this research, 21 rural enterprises and 18 performance indicators were analyzed. The data was collected using a questionnaire. Two complementary multivariate methodologies were used: cluster analysis and multidimensional scaling. Three distinct groups were found through the cluster analysis. The two most significant ones were composed by market share and production capacity and by the number of...

Assessing Viability and Sustainability: a Systems-based Approach for Deriving Comprehensive Indicator Sets Ecology and Society
Bossel, Hartmut; Sustainable Systems Research; H.Bossel@T-online.de.
Performance assessment in holistic approaches such as integrated natural resource management has to deal with a complex set of interacting and self-organizing natural and human systems and agents, all pursuing their own "interests" while also contributing to the development of the total system. Performance indicators must therefore reflect the viability of essential component systems as well as their contributions to the viability and performance of other component systems and the total system under study. A systems-based derivation of a comprehensive set of performance indicators first requires the identification of essential component systems, their mutual (often hierarchical or reciprocal) relationships, and their contributions to the performance of...

Cross-cultural Conflicts in Fire Management in Northern Australia: Not so Black and White Ecology and Society
Andersen, Alan; Wildlife and Ecology, CSIRO Tropical Ecosystems Research Centre; Alan.Andersen@terc.csiro.au.
European ("scientific") and Aboriginal ("experiential") perspectives on fire management in northern Australia are often contrasted with each other. For Europeans, management is portrayed as a science-based, strategically directed and goal-oriented exercise aimed at achieving specific ecological outcomes. In contrast, landscape burning by Aboriginal people is more of an emergent property, diffusely arising from many uses of fire that serve social, cultural, and spiritual, as well as ecological, needs. Aboriginal knowledge is acquired through tradition and personal experience, rather than through the scientific paradigm of hypothesis testing. Here I argue that, in practice, science plays only a marginal role in European fire management in northern Australia....

Définition d'Indicateurs de performance et d'un Tableau de bord pour la Réserve Naturelle Marine de La Réunion (Rapport du site atelier de La Réunion pour le projet PAMPA) ArchiMer
Tessier, Emmanuel; Pothin, Karine; Chabanet, Pascale; Fleury, Pierre-gildas; Bissery, Claire; David, Gilbert; Thomassin, Aurélie; Lemoigne, Valerie; Loiseau, Nicolas.
The objectives of marine protected areas (MPA), such as Reunion’s Marine Reserve founded in 2007, are (i) protect habitats (ecosystems) and resources (biodiversity) from increasing pressure due to a major urban, economic and recreational development; ii) manage uses and conflicts between traditional fisheries, spear-fishing, diving and recreational activities inside the coastal zone. These goals necessitate monitoring tools such as indicators and diagnostics. The PAMPA programme involves seven MPA including the Natural Marine Reserve of La Reunion (RNMR). It aims for each site to identify and validate indicators according to management objectives and group them in a MPA performance dashboard. This panel will help to visualize temporal trends and define...

ENERGY EFFICIENCY OF A CENTER PIVOT IRRIGATION SYSTEM REA
Barbosa,Brenon D. S.; Colombo,Alberto; Souza,João G. N. de; Baptista,Victor B. da S.; Araújo,Ana C. S. de.
ABSTRACT This study aimed to evaluate the energy efficiency of a center pivot irrigation system operating in a terrain of variable topography. Values of Pumping Energy Efficiency (PEE), Supply Energy Efficiency (SEE), Global Energy Efficiency (GEE) and Specific Energy (Es in kWh m-3) computed at 18 different angular positions of the lateral line were used as energy efficiency indicators. An ultrasonic flow meter, digital pressure transducers and a power quality analyzer were used in order to evaluate hydraulic (total system flow-Q and total dynamic head-TDH) and electrical parameters (active electrical power - AEP) of the center pivot pumping unit that were required for evaluating the selected energy efficiency indictors. Topographic elevations of the...

HARVEST LABOR QUALITY AND PRODUCTIVITY:CASE STUDY OF CHERRY GROWING IN CHILE Rev. Bras. Frutic.
JARA-ROJAS,ROBERTO; GUERRA,ANTONIO; ADASME-BERRIOS,CRISTIÁN; ENGLER,ALEJANDRA; VALDÉS,RODRIGO.
In Chile, the cherry tree has been one of the fastest growing and most profitable crops in the last ten years. However, increasing production costs, the scarcity of hired labor, and unfavorable exchange rates have reduced the productivity and competitiveness of the Chilean fruit sector. The aim of this article is to evaluate the harvest labor quality in cherry growing in Chile through the use of productivity indicators. A harvest labor evaluation system (HLES) was designed and four indicators were measured: Average Weight of Harvested Box, Average Daily Production per Worker, Percent of Export Fruit, and Percent of Fruit Discarded. Significant differences werefound between the 2010/11 season (with the HLES implementation) and the previous seasons without...

Use of performance indicators to assess the solid waste management of health services Anais da ABC (AABC)
ASSIS,MAYARA C.; GOMES,VANIELLE A.P.; BALISTA,WAGNER C.; FREITAS,RODRIGO R. DE.
ABSTRACT Modern society faces serious challenges, among them, the complexity of environmental problems. Thus, there are several possible sources of environmental degradation, however, the waste produced by health services have an important peculiarity due to its toxic or pathogenic characteristics, since when managed improperly provide also health risk public. The involvement of solid waste from healthcare services environmental impact integrates matters a little more complex, because in addition to environmental health, they also interfere with the healthiness of environments that generate, with the consequences of nosocomial infections, occupational health and public. Thus, the management has become an urgent need, especially when we see no use of...
