A new concept for insect damage evaluation based on plant physiological variables Anais da ABC (AABC)
Neves,Ademir D.; Oliveira,Ricardo F.; Parra,José R.P..
The objective of this study was to determine the damage levels caused by Orthezia praelonga Douglas, 1891 and Leucoptera coffeella (Guérin-Mèneville 1842), on rangpur lime and Obatã coffee leaves, respectively. Measurements were based on a new concept for the evaluation of the following plant physiological parameters: photosynthesis, stomatal conductance, leaf temperature and transpiration, and internal concentration of CO2 (by infrared analyzer). A negative correlation between infestation level and photosynthesis was found, where the negative inflexion point of the curve was considered as a reference for damage levels. The control level for O. praelonga is below the 7-13% limit for damaged leaf area (40 to 70 scales per leaf), while for L. coffeella it is...

Aspects of nitrogen metabolism in coffee plants Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Carelli,Maria Luiza Carvalho; Fahl,Joel Irineu; Ramalho,José D. Cochicho.
Coffee plants are highly N-demanding plants. Despite the importance of N nutrition for the development, acclimation and yield of coffee plants, there are few reports concerning N metabolism in this species. In this review, our intention is to summarize the information available in the literature and to point out the influence of environmental conditions on N assimilation, as well as comment and discuss some apparently contradictory results and raise and enlighten queries about N assimilation in coffee plants.

Carbohydrate production and transport in cotton cultivars grown under boron deficiency Scientia Agricola
Bogiani,Julio Cesar; Amaro,Amanda Cristina Esteves; Rosolem,Ciro Antonio.
An adequate supply of boron (B) is required for the optimal growth and development of cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) plants, but the low phloem mobility of B limits the possibilities of correcting B deficiency. There are indications that different cotton cultivars could have different responses to B deficiency. The differences in responses of cotton cultivars to B regarding photoassimilate production and transport were studied in a greenhouse experiment with nutrient solution. Treatments consisted of three cotton cultivars (FMT 701, DP 604BG and FMX 993) and five concentrations of B (0.0, 2.5, 5.0, 10.0 and 20.0 µmol L−1). Sampling began at the phenological stage B1 (first square) and continued for four weeks. The leaf area and the number of reproductive...

Carbon isotope composition and leaf anatomy as a tool to characterize the photosynthetic mechanism of Artemisia annua L. Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Marchese,José Abramo; Broetto,Fernando; Ming,Lin Chau; Ducatti,Carlos; Rodella,Roberto Antonio; Ventrella,Marília Contin; Gomes,Greice Daiane Rodrigues; Franceschi,Lúcia de.
Leaves of Artemisia annua L. are a plentiful source of artemisinin, a drug with proven effectiveness against malaria. The aim of this study was to classify the photosynthetic mechanism of A. annua through studies of the carbon isotope composition (delta 13C) and the leaf anatomy. A. annua presented a delta 13C value of - 31.76 ± 0.07, which characterizes the plants as a typical species of the C3 photosynthethic mechanism, considering that the average delta 13C values for C3 and C4 species are -28 and -14, respectively. The leaf anatomy studies were consistent with the delta 13C results, where, in spite of the existence of parenchymatic cells forming a sheath surrounding the vascular tissue, the cells do not contain chloroplasts or starch. This...

Carbon sequestration in the rain forest: alternatives using environmentally friendly biotechnology Biota Neotropica
Buckeridge,Marcos S.; Aidar,Marcos P.M..
As carbon dioxide increases on Earth atmosphere, the rise in average temperatures may provoke changes in the environment that could damage civilisation as we know it. As a result, the need to sequester carbon becomes urgent, and one of the options we have is to use the potential of the forests to do it by enhancing assimilation of CO2 through photosynthesis. However, if we consider the use of plants to increase carbon sequestration, a problem that looms is that species often acclimate and actually reduce CO2 assimilation through feedback mechanisms of the sugars that are the product. In the present article, we propose that some biochemical pathways, such as those in control of photosynthesis, carbohydrate metabolism and assimilation, and cellulose and...

Climate change and agroecosystems: the effect of elevated atmospheric CO2 and temperature on crop growth, development, and yield Ciência Rural
Streck,Nereu Augusto.
The amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) of the Earth´s atmosphere is increasing, which has the potential of increasing greenhouse effect and air temperature in the future. Plants respond to environment CO2 and temperature. Therefore, climate change may affect agriculture. The purpose of this paper was to review the literature about the impact of a possible increase in atmospheric CO2 concentration and temperature on crop growth, development, and yield. Increasing CO2 concentration increases crop yield once the substrate for photosynthesis and the gradient of CO2 concentration between atmosphere and leaf increase. C3 plants will benefit more than C4 plants at elevated CO2. However, if global warming will take place, an increase in temperature may offset the...

Cloroplast pigments as indicators of lead stress REA
Gomes,Silvânia M. de S.; Lima,Vera Lucia A. de; Souza,Adailson P. de; Nascimento,Joab J. V. R. do; Nascimento,Everaldo S. do.
Plants respond to environmental adversities, becoming an indicator for assessing the environment quality. In this aspect, chlorophyll contents as well, carotenoids are used as a reliable indicator to associate environmental quality and pollution, mainly regarding the toxicity of heavy metals in higher plants. So, we aimed to evaluate the content of chlorophyll a, b, and total chlorophylls and carotenoids in plants vetiver [Vetiveria zizanioides (L.) Nash], maize (Zea mays L.) cv. AG 1051, sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) cv. BRS 122/V-2000, and castor beans (Ricinus communis L. ) cv . Northeastern BRS grown in contaminated soil with lead, with and without correction of soil pH, so they were used as indicators of metal stress by the soil. From the...

CO2-response function of radiation use efficiency in rice for climate change scenarios PAB
Streck,Nereu Augusto; Rosa,Hamilton Telles; Walter,Lidiane Cristine; Silva,Michel Rocha da; Uhlmann,Lilian Osmari.
The objective of this work was to evaluate a generalized response function to the atmospheric CO2 concentration [f(CO2)] by the radiation use efficiency (RUE) in rice. Experimental data on RUE at different CO2 concentrations were collected from rice trials performed in several locations around the world. RUE data were then normalized, so that all RUE at current CO2 concentration were equal to 1. The response function was obtained by fitting normalized RUE versus CO2 concentration to a Morgan-Mercer-Flodin (MMF) function, and by using Marquardt's method to estimate the model coefficients. Goodness of fit was measured by the standard deviation of the estimated coefficients, the coefficient of determination (R²), and the root mean square error (RMSE). The...

Combined effects of global climate change and nutrient enrichment on the physiology of three temperate maerl species ArchiMer
Qui-minet, Zujaila Nohemy; Coudret, Jérôme; Davoult, Dominique; Grall, Jacques; Mendez‐sandin, Miguel; Cariou, Thierry; Martin, Sophie.
Made up of calcareous coralline algae, maerl beds play a major role as ecosystem engineers in coastal areas throughout the world. They undergo strong anthropogenic pressures, which may threaten their survival. The aim of this study was to gain insight into the future of maerl beds in the context of global and local changes. We examined the effects of rising temperatures (+3°C) and ocean acidification (−0.3 pH units) according to temperature and pH projections (i.e., the RCP 8.5 scenario), and nutrient (N and P) availability on three temperate maerl species (Lithothamnion corallioides, Phymatolithon calcareum, and Lithophyllum incrustans) in the laboratory in winter and summer conditions. Physiological rates of primary production, respiration, and...

Compatibility of tomato cultivar Santa Cruz Kada grafted on different Solanaceae species and control of bacterial wilt Horticultura Brasileira
Zeist,André R; Giacobbo,Clevison L; Silva Neto,Gentil F da; Zeist,Ricardo A; Dorneles,Keilor da R; Resende,Juliano TV de.
ABSTRACT The objective of this work was to evaluate the compatibility, gas exchange and yield of tomato cultivar Santa Cruz Kada, susceptible to bacterial wilt (Ralstonia solanacearum) when grafted on different Solanaceae species. Rootstock sources were the mini-tomato RVTC-66, Cayenne pepper, Jerusalem cherry (Solanum pseudocapsicum), sticky nightshade (Solanum sisymbriifolium), and cultivar Santa Cruz Kada itself (self-grafting). Two materials were tested to promote the union between rootstocks and scions: grafting clips and biodegradable tape (Parafilm). Grafting success index (GSI) was evaluated and, for treatments using biodegradable tape, grafting incompatibility, gas exchange, agronomic characteristics and bacterial wilt epidemiology were assessed...

Copper Stress on Photosynthesis of Black Mangle (Avicennia germinans) Anais da ABC (AABC)
GONZALEZ-MENDOZA,DANIEL; GIL,FRANCISCO ESPADAS y; ESCOBOZA-GARCIA,FERNANDO; SANTAMARIA,JORGE M.; ZAPATA-PEREZ,OMAR.
The effects of copper toxicity on the photosynthetic activities of Avicennia germinans was investigated using two CuSO4 concentrations (0.062 and 0.33 M) added in Hoagland's solution in an aerated hydroponic system. Photosynthesis and chlorophyll fluorescence were measured after 30 h of copper stress. Results obtained in this study show that increasing levels of Cu+2 of 0.062 and 0.33 M Cu+2 resulted in a general reduction of the stomatal conductance (28 and 18%, respectively) and 100% of inhibition of net photosynthesis. Additionally, at these concentrations of Cu+2, reductions of chlorophyll fluorescence parameters were also observed. These changes suggested that the photosynthetic apparatus of Avicennia germinans was the primary target of the Cu+2...

Cotton response to mepiquat chloride and temperature Scientia Agricola
Rosolem,Ciro A.; Oosterhuis,Derrick M.; Souza,Fabio S. de.
Gibberellin inhibitor growth regulators are used for cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) canopy manipulation to avoid excess growth and yield losses. However, under temperatures below or over the optimum for cotton production the effect of mepiquat chloride (MC) has not always been significant. In this experiment, cotton plants were grown in growth chambers to study the response to MC as affected by temperature and to determine if an increase in dose could overcome the temperature effects. Mepiquat chloride was applied at rates of 0, 15 and 30 g ai ha-1 at the pinhead square stage. Plants were then grown under three temperature regimes: 25/15 °C, 32/22 °C, and 39/29 °C (day/night temperatures) for 51 days. Higher temperatures increased plant height,...
