A canonical correlation analysis of the association between carcass and ham traits in pigs used to produce dry-cured ham Genet. Mol. Biol.
Ventura,Henrique T.; Lopes,Paulo S.; Peloso,José V.; Guimarães,Simone E.F.; Carneiro,Antonio Policarpo S.; Carneiro,Paulo L.S..
The association between carcass and ham traits in a pig population used to produce dry-cured ham was studied using canonical correlation analysis. The carcass traits examined were hot carcass weight (HCW), backfat thickness (BT) and loin depth (LD), and the ham traits studied were gross ham weight (GHW), trimmed ham weight (THW), ham inner layer fat thickness (HIFT), ham outer layer fat thickness (HOFT), pH (pH) and the Göfo value. Carcass and ham traits are not independent. The canonical correlations (r) between the carcass and ham traits at 130 kg were 0.77, 0.24 and 0.20 for the first, second and third canonical pair, respectively, and were all significant (p < 0.01) by the Wilks test. The corresponding canonical correlations between the three...

A model on biological flow of phosphorus in growing pigs Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Lopes,J.B.; Moreira,J.A.; Kebreab,E.; Vitti,D.M.S.S.; Abdalla,A.L.; Crompton,L.A.; France,J..
Ten crossbred barrows weighting 20kg were allocated in five groups fed and on diets consisted of different total phosphorus (P) levels: 0.30%, 0.40%, 0.51%, 0.65%, and 0.73%. The animals were intravenously injected 7.4MBq of radioactive P (32P) and after seven days they were slaughtered for further analysis. The evaluated parameters were intake, excretion, specific activities, and flow of P in compartments (1-gut, 2-blood, 3-bone, and 4-soft tissue). Besides fecal losses, the kidneys played an import role in P regulation. The flows of P from tissue and gut to the blood were affected by P intake.

A porcine gene, PBK, differentially expressed in the longissimus muscle from Meishan and Large White pig Genet. Mol. Biol.
Yonggang,Liu; Sumei,Zhao; Hongbin,Pan; Shizheng,Gao.
An investigation of differences in gene expression in the longissimus muscle of Meishan and Large White pigs was undertaken, using the mRNA display technique. A fragment of one differentially expressed gene was isolated and sequenced, whereupon the complete cDNA sequence was then obtained by using the rapid amplification of cDNA ends (RACE). The nucleotide sequence of the gene is not related to any known porcine gene. Sequence analysis revealed that the open reading frame of this gene encodes a protein with 322 amino acids, thus displaying high sequence identity with the PDZ binding kinase (PBK) of eleven other animal species - dog, horse, cattle, human, chimpanzee, crab-eating macaque, rhesus monkey, rat, mouse, gray short-tailed opossum and platypus, so...

A RT-PCR assay for the detection of encephalomycarditis virus infections in pigs BJM
Pérez,Lester J.; Díaz de Arce,Heidy.
Encephalomyocarditis virus (EMCV) infections can cause losses in pig farms all over the world. Rapid, sensitive and unequivocal detection of this virus is therefore essential for the diagnosis and control of the disease. An RT-PCR assay was developed, optimized and evaluated for encephalomyocarditis virus detection in organ based on a pair of primers that amplifies a 165 bp DNA fragment from a highly conserved nucleotide region of the viral 3D glycoprotein. PCR products of the expected size were obtained from Cuban EMCV 744/03 strain. Non-specific reactions were not observed when other porcine RNA genome viruses and uninfected cells were used. The analytical sensitivity of the test was estimated to be 2 TCID50/50 mL. The analysis of tissue homogenate...

Anatomic Study of the Right Coronary Artery in Pigs: Feature Review in Comparison with the Human Artery International Journal of Morphology
Gómez,F. A; Ballesteros,L. E.
A few studies conducted on the morphology of coronary arteries in pigs emphasize the description of its course and number of branches. The objective of this study was to determine the anatomic expression of the right coronary artery (RCA) in pigs of commercial stock. One hundred and fifty eight hearts obtained from pigs destined to sacrifice were studied. The RCA were perfused with polyester resin (Palatal 85% and Styrene 15%) and then subjected to KOH infusion for 5 minutes to release the subepicardial fat. Diameters were measured and courses were evaluated. Results: The diameter of the RCA in its proximal portion was 3.85 mm (SD 0.75). The right artery of the cone originated from the RCA in 100 specimens (63.3%) and from the aorta (third coronary) in 8...

Applying precision feeding to improve the nitrogen efficiency of swine production: a review of possible practices and obstacles Ciência Rural
Monteiro,Alessandra Nardina Trícia Rigo; Bertol,Teresinha Marisa; Kessler,Alexandre de Mello.
ABSTRACT: Optimizing nutrient efficiency is essential in order to increase sustainability of pig production systems, especially where the growing demand for food must be met at an affordable cost, without compromising environmental resources. To make this happen, it is necessary to develop efficient methods to accurately estimate the nutritional requirements of animals, as well as develop equipment and systems that allow for applying such expertise in the production system. Estimating the nutritional requirement of pigs through mathematical models, considering several factors that can impact the requirement, is a key factor to reduce the environmental load from pig production. Likewise, feed formulation and feeding programs, can help to achieve this. In...

Association of a PIT1 gene polymorphism with growth hormone mRNA levels in pig pituitary glands Genet. Mol. Biol.
Franco,Maurício Machaim; Antunes,Robson Carlos; Oliveira,Katiana Mello de; Pereira,Cícero Donizete; Biase,Fernando Henrique; Nunes,Francis de Morais Franco; Goulart,Luiz Ricardo.
Fourty-six non-castrated, halothane-free, male Landrace pigs were genotyped by PCR-RFLP for the Rsa I polymorphism in the PIT1 gene and classified into AA and AB genotypes. Total RNA was extracted from the pituitaries and the relative quantities of growth hormone (GH) mRNA were determined by semi-quantitative RT-PCR. Pigs with the AB genotype had higher levels of GH mRNA than those with the AA genotype (p = 0.034; Kruskal-Wallis test). This result suggests that the Rsa I polymorphism may be involved in Pit-1 protein expression or function, which in turn may influence GH transcription and expression. Thus, the Rsa I PIT1 gene polymorphism in this pig line may be used as a molecular marker to identify higher GH expression and possibly select for carcass and...

Association of the estrogen receptor gene Pvu II restriction polymorphism with expected progeny differences for reproductive and performance traits in swine herds in Brazil Genet. Mol. Biol.
Santana,Bárbara Amélia Aparecida; Biase,Fernando H.; Antunes,Robson Carlos; Borges,Mauricio; Franco,Mauricio Machaim; Goulart,Luiz Ricardo.
Estrogen has an important function in swine reproduction and growth. A Pvu II restriction enzyme polymorphism has been proven to be an important genetic variation in the estrogen receptor gene (ESR) and may be considered as a candidate gene for use in pig production but there is no data regarding the prevalence of this polymorphism in the Brazilian pig population. We used DNA samples from the following three purebred pig breeds: Large White (336 females and 26 males), Landrace (304 females and 27 males) and Pietrain (125 females and 11 males). The ESR genotyping was performed using PCR-RFLP. For each breed, genotypes for the ESR gene were compared independently for expected progeny differences (EPD) in litter size (LS), average daily weight gain (DWG)...

Tisdell, Clement A.; Wilson, Clevo.
This report establishes that ACIAR Research Project AS2/1994/023, ‘Breeding and feeding pigs in Australia and Vietnam’ (supported by ACIAR from July 1995 to the end of 2000) has yielded an extraordinarily high rate of economic return on the funds invested. The collaborating agencies were the Department of Primary Industries, Queensland, James Cook University and The University of Queensland in Australia, and the Institute of Agricultural Sciences of South Vietnam in Vietnam. The best estimate benefit–cost ratio for investment in this project is at least 159:1 with a corresponding internal rate of return of 900% and a net present value of A$496 million. This is a total value, not an annual value. To give context to the number A$496 m, in 2000, 1.3 million...

Bronchial tree Architecture in Mammals of Diverse Body Mass International Journal of Morphology
Monteiro,Adilson; Smith,Ricardo Luiz.
The anatomy of mammal's lung air space constitutes the bronchial tree which disposition is associated to air flux dynamics. Casts obtained from human, pig and rat lungs were studied to analyze possible differences of the bronchial tree architecture in mammals with diverse dimensions and posture. Air spaces were filled with polymers through trachea followed by acid corrosion. Tracheal and main bronchial division's diameters were measured to relate with body mass using allometry. The results revealed a dichotomic bronchial branching pattern in the human casts and a monopodial pattern in animals. In allometric relationship trachea was larger in rats, then pigs and lastly in humans, differences were statistically significant, the same occurs in right bronchus,...

Cardiac rhabdomyoma in a slaughtered pig Ciência Rural
Pereira,Paula Reis; Cruz,Raquel Aparecida Sales da; Jühlich,Luciane Maria; Sonne,Luciana; Barcellos,David Emílio Santos Neves de; Driemeier,David.
ABSTRACT: Rhabdomyoma is a rare neoplasm of striated muscle that occurs predominantly in the myocardium. In animals, cardiac rhabdomyoma are observed as incidental lesions in slaughter pigs and have been rarely described in other species, such as cattle, dogs, and deer. This report describes a case of cardiac rhabdomyoma in a male pig at slaughter age that died suddenly in the pre-slaughter period. At necropsy, multiple nodules were observed in the right and left ventricular walls and the interventricular septum. Histopathological examination showed neoplastic proliferation composed of polyhedral cells, with vacuolated cytoplasm that sometimes presented a “spider cell” appearance. Histochemical staining with Schiff’s periodic acid revealed glycogen...

Characterization analysis and polymorphism detection of the porcine Myd88 gene Genet. Mol. Biol.
Li,Xinyun; Liu,Huazhen; Shulin,Yang; Tang,Zhonglin; Ma,Yuehui; Chu,Mingxing; Li,Kui.
The myeloid differentiation primary response protein 88 (Myd88) is an essential adaptor protein, which mediates in all Toll-like receptor (TLR) members signal transduction, except for TLR3. In this study, the 4464 bp genomic sequence of porcine Myd88 was first isolated, whereupon tissue distribution, chromosome mapping and single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) were analyzed. Our results revealed that porcine Myd88 gene, which was located at chromosome 13 linked with marker S0288 (distance = 40 cR; LOD = 8.66), was widely expressed in all the examined tissues. There were 16 potential SNPs in the isolated genome fragment. SNP 797T/C in the first intron was studied, with no significant association being found between the genotype and immune traits in pigs (p...
