Agricultural Research for Development in the Tropics: Caught between Energy Demands and Food Needs JARTS
Asch, Folkard; Huelsebusch, Christian.
We have shown in this analysis, that there is no easy answer to the question: is biofuel out competing food production for natural resources. We feel that when addressing this issue future discussions need to include a broader view on the global consequences of regional and national actions. It is necessary to base decisions not on short-term political or economic arguments but on the long term balance for resources and environmental health, both providing the basis for the livelihood of future generations. Therefore, efforts must be made to calculate the real carbon balance and water foot prints for every item and process involved in the production chains and base decisions on the least detrimental approach to crop and energy production and not on the...

Calibration of the century, apsim and ndicea models of decomposition and n mineralization of plant residues in the humid tropics Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Nascimento,Alexandre Ferreira do; Mendonça,Eduardo de Sá; Leite,Luiz Fernando Carvalho; Neves,Júlio Cesar Lima.
The aim of this study was to calibrate the CENTURY, APSIM and NDICEA simulation models for estimating decomposition and N mineralization rates of plant organic materials (Arachis pintoi, Calopogonium mucunoides, Stizolobium aterrimum, Stylosanthes guyanensis) for 360 days in the Atlantic rainforest bioma of Brazil. The models´ default settings overestimated the decomposition and N-mineralization of plant residues, underlining the fact that the models must be calibrated for use under tropical conditions. For example, the APSIM model simulated the decomposition of the Stizolobium aterrimum and Calopogonium mucunoides residues with an error rate of 37.62 and 48.23 %, respectively, by comparison with the observed data, and was the least accurate model in the...

CGPRT Crops in the Philippines: a Statistical Profile, 1990-1999 AgEcon
Chowdhury, Mohammad A.T.; Arif, Muhamad.
"CGPRT Crops in the Philippines: A Statistical Profile, 1990-1999" is the eighth in the series of the CGPRT Centre's publications providing specific and wide-ranging agricultural data focusing on coarse grains, pulses, roots and tuber (CGPRT) crops in Asia. An earlier series was published in January 1992 in collaboration with the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Forestry and Natural Resources Research and Development (PCARRD) covering the period 1960-1990. In keeping pace with the previous publication, this updated volume covers eight crops: corn (maize), mungbean, soybean, groundnut, cassava, sweet potato, white potato and rice. Although not a CGPRT crop, rice is the most important crop in the Philippines in terms of area planted and production, hence...

Suppadit,Tawadchai; Kitikoon,Viroj; Phubphol,Anucha; Neumnoi,Penthip.
Biochar can improve soil structure and water retention, enhance nutrient availability and retention, ameliorate acidity, and reduce heavy metal toxicity to plant roots. In this study, a basin experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of quail litter biochar (QLB) on the availability of Cd to physic nut (Jatropha curcas L.) plants. QLB was applied to the soil in which four new physic nut varieties (Takfa, Doi Saket, Lao, and Rayong) in factorial combinations at four levels (0, 5, 10, and 15 g kg-1 soil) to soil that contained 60.8 mg Cd kg-1. After transplanting plant height and canopy radius were measured every 2-mo and the number of leaves and branches at 6-mo, while yield components and Cd residues were measured at 8-mo intervals. The...

Effects of Biomass Ashes on Plant Nutrition in Tropical and Temperate Regions JARTS
Lopez, Raul; Padilla, Ernesto; Bachmann, Silvia; Eichler-Loebermann, Bettina.
The drastic rise of prices for commercial fertilizers is one of the main obstacles to increase the productivity in crop production, mainly in poor countries. The search for alternatives therefore becomes very important. The reutilization of residues from bionergy processes for plant nutrition is an important concern to save fertilizers and to implement nutrient cycling in agriculture. For this study ashes derived from bioenergy production were investigated. The effect of sugar cane ash (SCA) on lettuce and cucumber was investigated in Cuba and the effects of ashes from wood (WA), poultry litter (PLA), and rape meal (RMA) on ryegrass and oil radish were investigated in Germany. Special attention was given to phosphorus (P) availability. Positive yield...

Emprego de modelos matemáticos para pesquisa e gerenciamento de sistemas integrados de lavoura e pecuária. Infoteca-e
VELOSO, R. F.; BARIONI, L. G.; MARTHA JUNIOR, G. B..
ABSTRACT: Annual crops have been frequently used for the establishment and renewing of pastures in the Brazilian Cerrado. However it was only recently that cropping and cattle production have been treated as integrated systems' components. In this context, the publication shows how system concepts and its implementation through mathematical modeling can be used in the management of integrated crop-livestock production systems. Further, it is concluded that the increasing access to computers is creating great opportunities to store and spread out information to better support decision-making. It is concluded, however, that the development of computer models for integrated systems is still incipient and that closer collaboration among researchers of...

Grain Yield Response of Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) to Tied Ridges and Planting Methods on Entisols and Vertisols of Alemaya Area, Eastern Ethiopian Highlands JARTS
Gebrekidan, Heluf.
Field experiments were conducted under rain-fed conditions between 1986 and 1995 to investigate the effects of soil and water conservation treatments (tied ridges and planting methods) on the yield of an improved sorghum variety (ETS-2752) grown with and without N and P fertilizers on two major soils of Alemaya area, eastern Ethiopian highlands. The yield responded significantly (P ≤ 0.01) to the treatments both under fertilized and unfertilized conditions of the soils studied. However, the magnitude of the yield response and the relative efficiency of the tied ridges and planting methods varied with soil type, fertilization, and total rainfall and its distribution during the cropping season. Regardless of the type of tied ridge used, furrow planting,...

Household income and expenditure of farmers in Lao PDR: Comparison between rubber tree and sugarcane farmers Thai Agricultural
Leuangsay Phanthasith; Piansak Pakdee; Thanaporn Athipanyakul.
The objective of this study was to compare household income and expenditure between rubber tree and sugarcane farmers. The purposive sampling technique was used for data collection, and a structured questionnaire was used to interview a total of 100 farmers. A descriptive analysis was applied. The results indicated that in 2000-2010, the household income of rubber tree farmers was higher than those sugarcane farmers, especially in long run. The household consumption has increased during 2000-2010. The rubber tree farmers expensed their consumption in food item more than rice, but it was contrary for the sugarcane farmers. The net income of the rubber tree farmers was also greater than the sugarcane farmers; even it was negative in 2005. This can imply that...

How Do “Renewable Products” Impact Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services – The Example of Natural Rubber in China JARTS
Cotter, Marc; Martin, Konrad; Sauerborn, Joachim.
This paper aims to present the implications brought by the expansion of “renewable products” plantation systems in the tropics with cultivation of rubber (Hevea brasiliensis) as a main focus. Throughout South East Asia, natural forest is being replaced by rubber or oil palm (Elaeis guineensis) plantations, with severe consequences for the local flora and fauna. Main aspects of this review are: i) The provision of an overview over renewable resources in general and rubber in particular, with eco-physiological and agronomical information concerning rubber cultivation. ii) The effect of rubber plantations on biodiversity and species composition under different rubber farming approaches. In addition we debate the possible influences of such large scale land...
