A COMPETITIVENESS STUDY OF FOUR RICE PRODUCTION SYSTEMS IN TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO AgEcon
Seecharan, Denny; Jacque, Andrew Eliel.
Rice imports into Trinidad and Tobago in 2005 represented approximately 95% of domestic demand. Local production has been declining since reaching a peak of 21,000 tonnes in 1992. Present production is 3,500 tonnes. Rice is produced under a variety of production systems and on farms of varying sizes, productivity and quality of output. This paper examines the competitiveness of four production systems used in Trinidad and Tobago, viz.: the transplanting system (ST), the broadcast seeded system (SB)(both being small farms and highly labour intensive), the partially mechanized system of medium sized farms (MM) and a fully mechanized large farm utilizing aerial technology in the production system (CRP). The methodology involved the collection of data on...

ALTERNATIVES TO SUGAR CANE IN ST. KITTS: COMPETITIVENESS STUDIES OF 4 CROPS IN ST. KITTS/NEVIS AgEcon
Edwards, Allistair; Jacque, Andrew Eliel.
The sugar industry in the island of St. Kitts came to a close in 2005 and so too did a long period of monoculture and possibly a culture and lifestyle of a people that affectionately refer to their country as Sugar City. Sugar was cultivated on approximately 4,500 hectares and there is now a dire need for replacement commodities that fit within the social, economic and environmental landscape of the country. Sugar cane cultivation and sugar production provided good-paying jobs and was the main source of income for many households. The crop provided a high degree of soil conservation and was a boon to the tourism industry. In addition, sugar was a substantial source of foreign exchange and provided some diversification to a tourism dependent economy....

Beneficios privados y beneficios sociales en la cadena de la manzana para la exportación en el Uruguay. AgEcon
Rava, Catalina; Lanfranco, Bruno A.; Ferraro, Bruno.

Breaking the "Fertilizer Poverty" and Food Insecurity Traps in Smallholder Maize Based Farming System in Southern Africa: Experiences and Lessons from Soil Fertility Network/Economics and Policy Working Group (EPWG) AgEcon
Mekuria, Mulugetta; Waddington, Stephen R.; Siziba, Shephard.
Smallholder farmers in southern Africa face acute food insecurity because the productive capacity of their soils has declined. These resource-poor farmers increasingly cannot afford mineral fertilizers Farmers mentioned the lack of fertilizers for their depleted soils as the most important constraint- "Empty Soils, stomachs and pockets." In response to this challenge, Soil Fert Net researchers in southern Africa have developed and promoted a range of "best-bet" soil fertility management technological (SFMT) options for farmers. This paper presents a review of financial, adoption, institutional and policy analysis undertaken by EPWG members on the use of SFMT by smallholders. Financial and risk analysis tools, selected econometric models and policy analysis...

EU Preferential Partners in Search of New Policy Strategies for Agriculture: The Case of Citrus Sector in Trinidad and Tobago AgEcon
Jacque, Andrew Eliel; Dell'Aquila, Crescenzo; Perito, Maria Angela.
The paper assesses the competitive position of T&T's citrus industry and explains the declining productivity. It covers supply chain and agricultural trade policy issues and involves assembling two Policy Analysis Matrices, either with full cost of production or excluding establishment costs. Domestic and trade policy support shows significant for the sector. Production is internationally competitive, or possesses comparative advantage, only if costs of establishment are excluded. These results suggest that free trade agreements under the FTAA and the ACP-EU would work against the planting of new orchards and reinforce the decline of the sector.
