20 Jahre ‚Gäa e.V. - Vereinigung ökologischer Landbau’ Organic Eprints
Wolf, Dipl.-Ing. agr. D.; Hirte, Dr. K.; Schüler, Dr. C.; Heß, Prof. Dr. J..
For the understanding of ecological agriculture, knowledge of its roots is essential. Actual literature about this topic does not cover the history of ecological agriculture in East Germany especially if chronological development and individual motivation are seen as mutual dependent. The ecological organisation Gäa e.V. was founded in the GDR in 1989. Its origins were oppositional environmental groups working within the East German church. It developed own principles based on individual experience with unique aspects. It has established and integrated well in the German ecological agriculture structure after the reunification and the changed political background as an authentic representative of and for the East German ecological agriculture scene.

A localised development of organic farming as a response to the problem of water quality: a new challenge Organic Eprints
Vincent, A; Fleury, Philippe.
Initiatives aiming at developing organic farming (OF) to meet water quality stakes are increasing. This article is a comparative study of four such projects. It is based on semi-structured interviews. Two logics for public action are implemented to foster the development of OF in areas facing water quality problems. The first one aims at concentrating actions in water sensitive areas. The main tool that is then mobilized is the use of localized agri-environmental measures supporting conversion to organic farming. The second logic aims at implementing actions for organic development at a geographical scale considered as relevant for developing OF and differing from water sensitive areas. The main actions that are then activated are coordination,...

A Modelling Approach for Evaluating Agri-Environmental Policies at Sector Level Organic Eprints
Schader, C.; Sanders, J.; Nemecek, T; Lampkin, N. H.; Stolze, M..
This paper presents a new approach to evaluate the cost effectiveness of agri-environmental policies at sector level. Policy uptake, cumulative environmental effects and public expenditure are identified as the main determinants of cost-effectiveness. On the basis of the sector-consistent, comparative-static, farm group model FARMIS, the determinants of policy cost-effectiveness at sector level are addressed. Firstly, intensity levels for the FARMIS activities are defined in order to model uptake of agri-environmental policies with FARMIS, secondly, life-cycle assessment data is attached to these intensity levels to determine environmental effects of the policies and thirdly, public expenditure is calculated under consideration of transaction costs. This...

A Policy Impact Model for Organic Farming in Switzerland Organic Eprints
Sanders, Juern; Lampkin, Nicolas; Midmore, Peter; Stolze, Matthias.
Although organic farming has expanded significantly in Europe in the last decade, a sectoral policy model is still missing that is able to analyse the impact of policy measures on organic farming. The use of programming models in the form of a sector-consistent farm group model seems to be a promising model approach, whereas applied general equilibrium models are regarded as less promising. An example is given for a policy impact model for organic farming. The bottom-up structure of this type of model makes it possible to analyse the impact of policy measures on farm incomes and volumes of production of organic and conventional farms at farm, regional and sectoral level.

A policy relevant assessment of the environmental impacts of organic farming Organic Eprints
Dabbert, S.; Stolze, M.; Häring, A.M.; Piorr, A..
Organic farming has become an important aspect of European agri-environmental policy. Since the implementation of EC Reg. 2078/92, the EU promotes organic farming based explicitly on its positive effects on the environment. The objective of this paper is to contribute to a better understanding of organic farming's effects on the environment in comparison to conventional farming and to discuss the policy relevance of these issues. For this purpose the OECD set of environmental indicators for the agricultural sector has been adapted, taking into consideration only those indicators that are directly affected by the system of organic farming, as are the indicator categories ecosystem, natural resources, farm input and output, and health and welfare. Based on...

A reformulação do...

A reforma agrária no segundo mandato de Fernando Henrique Cardoso. Organic Eprints

Adaptation strategies and performances of three producer groups during times of change: lessons learned from the application of the Conditions-Strategies-Performances (CSP) concept in three case studies Organic Eprints
Münchhausen, von, Susanne; Knickel, Karlheinz; Lasner, Tobias; Milestad, Rebecka.
In the analysis, we will - identify the most significant changes over time in relevant market, regulatory, institutional and territorial conditions, - assess the social, economic and other resources available among different groups of primary producers, - relate conditions and resources to the (adaptation) strategies pursued (e.g. regarding the management of the chain and risks), and - explore the (potential) impacts of the resulting (or expected) changes on social, economic and environmental performances. The analysis aims at capturing the interrelationships between external and internal conditions, (adaptation) strategies and (sustainability) performance. A first important step in the analysis is to express conditions, strategies and...

Addressing the specific needs of organic farming in the New EU Member States by the Rural Development Programmes 2007-2013 Organic Eprints
Slabe, Anamarija; Häring, Anna Maria; Hrabalova, Andrea.
In all New EU Member States (NMS) and Candidate Countries (CCs) there is a lack of support measures for organic farming, other than area pay-ments, and there is no coherent policy for organic farming in general. The most significant problem areas are the general policy environment, underde-veloped marketing and processing, an almost total lack of information measures, insufficient and inap-propriate organic production capacity, and a lack of training and advisory services. The latest EU regula-tion on support for rural development provides a framework for a variety of measures to assist the development of organic farming and is therefore an important instrument for policy-makers, together with national action plans for organic farming. The problem issues...

Organic Eprints
Okuyama, Kássio K.; Rocha, Carlos H.; Neto, Pedro H. Weirich; Almeida, Dayana; Ribeiro, Diogenes R. S..

Adoption and Abandonment of Organic Farming: An Emperical Investigation of the Irish Drystock Sector Organic Eprints
Läpple, Doris.
There is a considerable literature about the adoption of organic farming. However, possible abandonment of organic farming has received scant attention. Thus, relatively little is known about the exit decisions of farmers. In addition, most studies are based on a static framework where it is not possible to account for changes in farmer decisions over time. This article attempts to fill this gap in the literature by investigating the determinants that affect both adoption and abandonment of organic drystock farming over time. The use of duration analysis allows for the consideration of cross-sectional and time-varying factors over the study period from 1981 to 2008. Using this dynamic econometric framework revealed a significant time effect on...

Agrarpolitische Bewertung der Umwelteffekte des ökologische Landbaus Organic Eprints
Dabbert, S.; Stolze, M.; Häring, A. M.; Piorr, A..

Agricultura familiar e políticas públicas: o impacto do Pronaf no Rio Grande do Sul. Organic Eprints

Agricultural land management, carbon reductions and climate policy for agriculture Organic Eprints
Müller, Adrian.
Agriculture contributes to climate change and at the same time has a huge climate change mitigation potential – this lies mainly in increased soil carbon sequestration. This article discusses the mitigation potential of soil carbon sequestration, the underlying processes and main challenges for its utilization. There are difficulties of reliable quantification, aspects of leakage and system boundaries. Utilization of this mitigation potential is currently mainly via offset mechanisms. Due to the named challenges, offset mechanisms are not adequate for this and more aggregate approaches should be employed.
