Bud development, flowering and fruit set of Moringa oleifera Lam. (Horseradish Tree) as affected by various irrigation levels JARTS
Muhl, Quintin Ernst; du Toit, Elsa S.; Steyn, Joachim Martin; Apostolides, Zeno.
Moringa oleifera is becoming increasingly popular as an industrial crop due to its multitude of useful attributes as water purifier, nutritional supplement and biofuel feedstock. Given its tolerance to sub-optimal growing conditions, most of the current and anticipated cultivation areas are in medium to low rainfall areas. This study aimed to assess the effect of various irrigation levels on floral initiation, flowering and fruit set. Three treatments namely, a 900 mm (900IT), 600 mm (600IT) and 300 mm (300IT) per annum irrigation treatment were administered through drip irrigation, simulating three total annual rainfall amounts. Individual inflorescences from each treatment were tagged during floral initiation and monitored throughout until fruit set....

Chromosome number, microsporogenesis, microgametogenesis, and pollen viability in the Brazilian native grass Mesosetum chaseae (Poaceae). Repositório Alice
SILVA, L. A. C.; PAGLIARINI, M. S.; SANTOS, S. A.; SILVA, N.; SOUZA, V. F..
The genus Mesosetum is a primarily South American genus with 42 species. Mesosetum chaseae, regionally known as ?grama-do-cerrado?, is abundant in the Pantanal Matogrossense (Brazil); it is a valuable resource for livestock and for environmental conservation. We collected specimens from the Nhecolandia sub-region of the Brazilian Pantanal, located in Corumbá, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. We examined chromosome number, ploidy level, meiotic behavior, microgametogenesis, and pollen viability of 10 accessions. All the accessions were diploid, derived from x = 8, presenting 2n = 2x = 16 chromosomes. Chromosomes paired as bivalents showing, predominantly, two terminal chiasmata. Interstitial chiasmata were rare. Meiosis was quite normal producing only a few...

Souza-Macedo,Viviane de; García-Dávila,Mario Augusto; Castro,Gisele Renata de; Garzón-Bautista,Yuri Marcela; Caetano,Creucí Maria.
Abstract The genus Capsicum comprises a large group of hot and sweet peppers, with different morphological varieties and degree of fruits pungency. Due to its active principles is widely used in cooking and in traditional medicine, being sold in large worldwide. In order to provide cytogenetic information which supporting plant breeding programs, this study aimed to analyze the meiotic behavior, chromosome number and pollen viability of the three species of greater economic importance of Capsicum (C. annuum, C. frutescens and C. chinense). Therefore, fruits and flower buds were collected from the Experimental Center of the Universidad Nacional de Colombia, campus Palmira- CEUNP to the corresponding mitotic, meiosis and pollen viability analysis. Plants...

"In vitro" pollen germination of Hevea camargoana. Repositório Alice
GONÇALVES, P. de S.; PAIVA, J. R. de; REBELLO, A. P..
A study of pollen viability was carried out aiming to obtain the best medium concentration for pollen germination. Different concentrations of sucrose, glucose, galactose, lactose and mannitol in distilled water with and without boric acid were tested as media for germination of pollen of Hevea camargoana in the laboratory. Twenty percent sucrose with 0.01% boric acid at 20 to 30 Graus C. gave the best results. Tube lengths of 74.78 um were obtained. Pollen tubes emerged within 30 minutes and completed full growth within six hours. Adding 0.01% boric acid increased the percentage germination markedly in all media excep in mannitol.

Partial success of marker-assisted selection of A and B onion lines in Brazilian germplasm. Repositório Alice
FERREIRA, R. R.; SANTOS, C. A. F..
This work aims to identify A and B onion lines in Brazilian germplasm, associating marker-assisted selection (MAS) of cytoplasm type and the Ms ocus with pollen viability analysis. MAS and pollen viability tests presented a complete agreement for the lines Alfa SF, BRS 367, BRS 367, Cascuda T7, Cascuda T5, EHCEB 20102017 and EHCEB 20142027. MAS was not validated by the pollen viability tests in some plants of the lines Alfa SF, EHCEB 20142028, EHCEB 20141028, EHCEB 20141027 e EHCEB 20141017. Plants with fertile pollen within a specific ?A? line were eliminated before anthesis. The methods used to evaluate pollen viability did not present agreement in the sterile and fertile classification in five onion accessions. Six pairs of A and B lines identified in...

Pollen grain viability in accessions of Crotalaria juncea L. (FABACEAE) Agrociencia
Coelho,Ana P. D.; Morais,Katiule P.; Dail Laughinghouse IV,Haywood; Giacomini,Sandro J.; Tedesco,Solange B..
Studies on pollen viability are useful for breeding Crotalaria juncea L. since they provide information that will increase the chance of successful intraspecific crossing. The aim of this study was to evaluate pollen viability in C. juncea accessions cultivated in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Inflorescences of 10 accessions of C. juncea were collected, fixed in absolute ethanol: glacial acetic acid (3:1) for 72 h at room temperature and placed in 70 % ethanol. Analysis of pollen viability was performed with slides of anthers using the squashing technique and staining with acetic orcein 2 % and Alexanders stain. Means were compared using the Tukey test (p≤0.05). Pollen viability was high and significantly different among the accessions; the highest...

Pollen viability and meiotic irregularities in a collection of Stevia rebaudiana (Bertoni) Bertoni cultivated in Tucumán, Argentina JBAG
Budeguer,C.J; Camadro,E.L; Erazzú,L.E.
Stevia rebaudiana (Bertoni) Bertoni (2n=2x=22) (Asteraceae family) is a species of economic value due to the presence of steviol glycosides in leaves -mainly stevioside and rebaudioside A- which are non-caloric sugars. In 2013, a collection of plants (genotypes) from four contrasting environments was established in Tucuman, Argentina, for evaluation under local conditions and, eventually, breeding purposes. As a first step, pollen viability and meiosis was studied in a sample of 56 plants. The percentage of pollen viability varied from medium (69.4%) to high (99.6%) in 52 of them, but from low (36.5%) to relatively low (51.5%) in the remaining four. The latter four plants also presented pollen grains of heterogeneous size, which were classified as n...
