Alkali pretreated of wheat straw and its enzymatic hydrolysis BJM
Han,Lirong; Feng,Juntao; Zhang,Shuangxi; Ma,Zhiqing; Wang,Yonghong; Zhang,Xing.
The efficiency of enzymatic hydrolysis of cellulose can be improved by various pretreatments of the substrate. In order to increase the efficiency of enzymatic saccharification of the wheat straw, we determined the effect of different pretreatments on the physical structure, chemical components and enzymatic saccharification of wheat straw. Our results showed that combination of grinding and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) treatment had high effect on the enzymatic hydrolysis of wheat straws. The optimal pretreatment condition was to grind the wheat straws into the sizes of 120 meshes followed by treatment with 1.0% NaOH for 1.5 h (121°C/15psi). Under this condition, the cellulose content of wheat straw was increased by 44.52%, while the content of hemicellulose...

Comparison of the susceptibility of two hardwood species, Mimosa scabrella Benth and Eucalyptus viminalis labill, to steam explosion and enzymatic hydrolysis BABT
Ramos,L. P.; Carpes,S. T.; Silva,F. T.; Ganter,J. L. M..
Steam explosion of two hardwood species was carried out with and without addition of sulfuric acid (H2SO4 0.5%, p/v) as a pretreatment catalyst. In general, wood chips of Eucalyptus viminalis Labill were shown to be more amenable to pretreatment than chips derived from bolds of Mimosa scabrella Benth (bracatinga). This was apparent from all pretreatment parameters tested including the overall recovery yields of pretreated fractions, carbohydrates (pentoses and hexoses) recovered as water-solubles, yield of dehydration by-products and lignin susceptibility to acid hydrolysis. There was no evidence for complete deacetylation of both wood species during pretreatment and lignin appeared to undergo extensive acid hydrolysis at higher pretreatment severities....

Dhal Recovery From Enzyme Pretreated Pigeon Pea Cultivar Gjp1 CIGR Journal
Dabhi, Mukesh N.; Sangani, V P; Rathod, P J.
GJP1 variety is newly developed variety of pigeon pea. It gives higher seed yield as compared to other varieties. Pigeon pea is mostly consumed in the form of splits hence, it is necessary to verify its hulling efficiency and utmost dhal recovery. Pre milling treatments are generally employed to loosen the seed coat to remove husk without losing any edible portion and better dhal recovery.  Xylanase, pectinase and cellulose enzymes were used to evaluate the milling properties of pigeon pea grains. Efforts were made to evaluate the effect of enzymatic parameters, i.e., enzyme concentration (20-50 mg/100g dry matter), incubation time (4-12 h), incubation temperature (35-55 oC) and tempering water pH (4.0-6.0) on hulling efficiency were optimized using...

Drying kinetics of bananas by natural convection: Influence of temperature, shape, blanching and cultivar Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Borges,Soraia Vilela; Mancini,Maurício C.; Corrêa,Jefferson Luiz Gomes; Leite,Julia Benedito.
The influence of variables as temperature, solid shape, temperature, branching and cultivar on drying of bananas were studied. Bananas from cv. Prata and D'água, on disk and cylindrical shape, blanched or not, were dehydrated in a tray dryer in natural convection at 40 and 70ºC. Drying behavior was analyzed by using a mathematical model. The exponential model showed good agreement to experimental data (r² 0.93 - 0.99 and standard error: 0.01- 0.05). Temperature presented positive influence on drying rate in all the tested conditions. With respect to the sample shape, the disk shape carried out to significantly higher drying rates only for D'água cultivar without blanching. Blanching was significantly influent, with positive influence, on drying rate of...

Effect of different beta-glucan preparation pretreatments on fortified bread quality Ciênc. Tecnol. Aliment.
KUREK,Marcin Andrzej; WYRWISZ,Jarosław; BRZESKA,Magdalena; MOCZKOWSKA,Małgorzata; KARP,Sabina; WIERZBICKA,Agnieszka.
Abstract This research explores the different beta-glucan preparation pretreatments prior to fortifying the bread (hydrating, freezing, boiling, blendering and their combination). Breads containing hydrated or dry beta-glucan preparations demonstrated lower values of specific volume than the control. On the other hand, the beta-glucan preparation, which was boiled or blendered after freezing showed higher specific volume. The firmest bread was achieved by adding beta-glucan preparation which was hydrated and blendered (significant at p ≤ 0.05) and the least firm was after application of a frozen blendered preparation. In our study, we researched the influence of pretreatment the beta-glucan preparation on the concentration of this compound. Our breads...

Effect of drying conditions on energy utilization during cocoyam drying CIGR Journal
Afolabi, Tinuade; Tunde-Akintunde, Toyosi; Olanipekun, Bosede F.
Cocoyam samples soaked in sodium metabisulphite (SM) and water blanched (WB) were oven dried at 50, 60 and 70° C and microwave power levels of 385, 540 and 700 W while untreated samples were sun dried. The effect of drying on selected properties of cocoyam was studied. The drying time generally reduced with increase in drying temperature and power level used. The use of SM pretreatment resulted in lower drying times compared with WB pretreatment. Effective moisture diffusivity values (Deff) for all the drying conditions varied from 5.27 x 10-8 to 2.07 x 10-6 m2/s and SM samples had higher values than WB samples.  Activation energy values for oven drying were 37.41 KJ/mol and 61.79 KJ/mol and that for microwave drying were 38.59 and 41.91W/g for SM and WB...

Effect of ultrasonication of Switchgrass on fermentable sugar production and biomass physical structure CIGR Journal
Sharma, Rajat; Sharma-Shivappa, Ratna R.; Boyette, Michael D.; Stikeleather, Larry F..
Pretreatment of lignocellulosic biomass for enhancing sugar yields has been studied extensively over the years.  Conventional methods employed to preprocess biomass to make it conducive for enzymatic hydrolysis have been hampered by issues like poor energy efficiency and production of undesirable by-products.  Ultrasonication, which involves the treatment of biomass through ultrasonic sound waves in a liquid medium without additional chemicals, is believed to have potential for biomass pretreatment.  In this study the effects of ultrasonication on switchgrass, a potential feedstock for bioethanol production due to its high cellulosic content, were investigated.  Results of compositional analysis and scanning electron microscopy conducted to visualize...

Ethanol production from agricultural wastes using Sacchromyces cervisae BJM
Irfan,Muhammad; Nadeem,Muhammad; Syed,Quratualain.
The main objective of this study was production of ethanol from three lignocellulosic biomasses like sugarcane bagasse, rice straw and wheat straw by Sacchromyces cervisae. All the three substrates were ground to powder form (2 mm) and pretreated with 3%H2O2 + 2% NaOH followed by steaming at 130 °C for 60 min. These substrates were hydrolyzed by commercial cellulase enzyme. The whole fermentation process was carried out in 500 mL Erlenmeyer flask under anaerobic conditions in submerged fermentation at 30 °C for three days of incubation period. FTIR analysis of the substrates indicated significant changes in the alteration of the structure occurred after pretreatment which leads to efficient saccharification. After pretreatment the substrates were...

Fermentative hydrogen production from agroindustrial lignocellulosic substrates BJM
Reginatto,Valeria; Antônio,Regina Vasconcellos.
To achieve economically competitive biological hydrogen production, it is crucial to consider inexpensive materials such as lignocellulosic substrate residues derived from agroindustrial activities. It is possible to use (1) lignocellulosic materials without any type of pretreatment, (2) lignocellulosic materials after a pretreatment step, and (3) lignocellulosic materials hydrolysates originating from a pretreatment step followed by enzymatic hydrolysis. According to the current literature data on fermentative H2 production presented in this review, thermophilic conditions produce H2 in yields approximately 75% higher than those obtained in mesophilic conditions using untreated lignocellulosic substrates. The average H2 production from pretreated material...

Particle size and lime addiction on properties of wood-cement composites produced by the method of densification by vibro compaction Ciência Rural
Azambuja,Rafael da Rosa; Castro,Vinicius Gomes de; Bôas,Barbara Talamini Villas; Parchen,Carlos Frederico Alice; Iwakiri,Setsuo.
ABSTRACT: This paper aimed to evaluate the effects of particle size and the use of lime as a pretreatment of Pinus spp wood particles on the production of wood-cement composites by vibro-compaction densification. Specimens for internal bond and static bending were produced with two different particle sizes: G1, particles that pass through a 4mm screen and were retained at 2mm screen, and G2, particles that pass through a 2mm screen and were retained at 0.84mm screen. The use of lime was also tested in two different methods as pretreatment of wood particles: carbonatation of wood particles before being used in the composite mixture; and addition of hydrated lime directly to the composite mixture. Use of larger particles (G1) presented higher values of...

Pretreatment strategies for delignification of sugarcane bagasse: a review BABT
Karp,Susan Grace; Woiciechowski,Adenise Lorenci; Soccol,Vanete Thomaz; Soccol,Carlos Ricardo.
The valorization of agro-residues by biological routes is a key technology that contributes to the development of sustainable processes and the generation of value-added products. Sugarcane bagasse is an agro-residue generated by the sugar and alcohol industry in Brazil (186 million tons per year), composed essentially of cellulose (32-44%), hemicellulose (27-32%) and lignin (19-24%). The conversion of sugarcane bagasse into fermentable sugars requires essentially two steps: pretreatment and hydrolysis. The aim of the pretreatment is to separate the lignin and break the structure of lignocellulose, and it is one of the most critical steps in the process of converting biomass to fermentable sugars. The aim of this review is to describe different...

The structural modification of cassava starch using a saline water pretreatment Ciênc. Tecnol. Aliment.
SANGIAN,Hanny Frans; TELLENG,Richard; ARUAN,Irfan; MOSEY,Handy Indra Regain; TAMUNTUAN,Gerald Hendrik.
Abstract The cassava has been modified successfully by using the saline water, which was abundantly available on the planet. The biomass was submerged in saline waters that salt concentrations were altered at 0, 3.5 percent (seawater) and 10 percent (w/w) and were kept 5 days. After recovery by washing steps, the treated solids were characterized by using XRD (X-ray diffraction ), FTIR (Fourier transform infra-red), and SEM (Scanning electron microscopic). The results showed that the XRD pattern of saline water pretreatment decreased significantly. The biggest decrease of X-ray intensity occurred at around 18o. Meanwhile, the fingerprint of FTIR revealed the transmittance intensity of infra-red ray of saline water treated solid inclined for all wave...
